i won't judge Lobbe untill he plays a full game in the H&A season. he works on grinding his opponents out over 120mins. so far in the NAB he's basically contended against 2-3 ruckman or 150 interchanges most weeks. new game next week.

I have not been impressed with his efforts, but I have held my judgement back because of this very reason. Even last week, they had Hampson, Vickery, and Chol on him. He had Dougal chop him out a few times, but basically rucked the full game. His strength will be his fitness and his ability to wear his opponent down. I am sure his taps will improve with confidence & game time too.

I am happy to back him ... at this stage!

Why we didn't make a play for Zac Smith last year perplexes me. Geelong got him for a bag of chips.

I can only assume we thought he was too good to be recruited for what would have been our intention of use at the time (thinking Ryder would play and Lobbe would come good) or he had no interest in us.

Agreed, Zac Smith is a very good ruckman, geebung got him for sfa.

Wish we would stop using him as a kickout target. I'm fine with him being in the forward line since the smalls can bail him out and stuffing up there is not as punishing.

I believe the lack of a genuine ruck coach could be just as big an issue as the rock lobster's form last year, and his fairly uninspiring preseason.
Having some bloke who is half a head shorter, leaning into him during training sessions, doesn't appear to me to be the best preparation for games against the big boys in the real stuff.

Greaves is a big boy fiddy. He's 2cm shorter than Lobbe.

What current form does Kreuzer have? He's played 14 games in the last two seasons for average hits outs of 21. Lobbe is consistently in the 30s. Grundy is overrated IMO, still young granted, but was fairly inconsistent last year. Any comparison with Lobbe would be a coin flip at best, but I'll give you that given youth. Any Port fan choosing McEvoy over Lobbe is in fact taking the piss, the guy is pure hype. Averaged 19 hit outs last year. If we had him, people would by pulling their hair out. Tom Nicholls, LOL.

If we had these guys and held them under the same microscope we hold over Matthew Lobbe, the Port board would cease due to the sheer visceral online rage.

If you're judging rucks on hitout numbers alone then Robbie Warnock and Mark Blake were stars.

Lobbe gets hitouts but he doesn't direct them well and he has little to no impact around the ground. The likes of Grundy, Nicholls, Kreuzer and McEvoy all have an impact around the ground that Lobbe just doesn't have.

Common sense says you draft a ruckmen roughly every two years and we didn't do so for about 6 years.

That's why, apart for a small window at the backend of last year, our ruck division has been a concern for this entire decade so far.

Deluca in 05, lobbe in 07, redden in 08, bass and cloke in 09, curnow in 10, renouf in 11, ryder and frampton in 14. Plenty of rucks recruited.

This attitude perplexes me. Discussing the pros and cons of a players ability isn't a knock on who they are as a person. It's not personal. People don't knock Lobbe to make him feel bad. I'm sure he's a cracking bloke and I sure as shit know anything we say here has no bearing on him and how he plays his footy.

Lobbe is going to be a freakin huge issue for us this year. I hope we're all wrong and he goes AA. But in the mean time, those with concerns as to how his performance will affect us should be allowed to discuss it with out being labeled a knocker or poor supporter.

Some people are able to separate the emotions they have for the football club and the players who play for it. Some who think they need to protect players from nasty internet comment aren't.

There's some comical overrating and underrating of Lobbe going on here. He's not the kind of player that sets the world on fire and he's not the kind of player that costs us games. He's more than serviceable and he'll grind out games better than most others. I reckon his impact will get better as the season wears on, particularly in the winter months.

Sorry, but this is just bullcrap! Firstly, I have no problems discussing negative aspects of Lobbe's game. We know they exist, and we know what he has to work on. There also have been many constructive posts regarding this. For mine though, it is just the constant harping, sniping, and downright nasty posts ... And the frigging season hasn't even started yet!
