The Melbourne Kangaroos?

Seems the biggest story of today, that in an interview, former AFL CEO Wayne Jackson has bought up the idea of North Melbourne Kangaroos and the Melbourne Demons merging to make a "superpower".

Makes sense in a business and football success point of view, but will obviously stir up a hornet's nest from within the 2 clubs.

Just a rough estimation of what the Melbourne Kangaroos could bring to the competition;

* Guaranteed annual membership of 40,000 +
* Average home crowds at the MCG of 40,000 +
* Increased sponsorship income for one club, maybe even a record amount
* A strong future playing list, if they were allowed to keep all their current players

It's a rather obvious idea, take the 2 worst financially sustainable clubs and merge them. I for one see it as something that will happen eventually (2 Vic clubs merge), it's just a question of who and when.

Thoughts?

mcintosh hansen wells scully butcher watts ziebell etc sounds ENTICING for supporters of both clubs and i reckon melb and kangaroos supporters might be tempted! but in the end they wont vote for it IMO, means losing your club look at fitzroy!

Couple of points

- How did your 'rough estimate' come up with a guaranteed membership of 40k?

- Do you seriously believe that the other clubs would allow this new entity to keep their entire playing list from the two original clubs?

- It is now also debateable whether Melbourne is in the bottom two worse financially performing clubs.

This is Jackson's opinion and he's allowed to have one.

It will never happen as Melbourne and North Melbourne are too arrogant to do it.

True. It's also all about timing aswell. BOTH clubs would need to be at rock bottom at the same time with no other options.

Melbourne are seemingly on the rise at the moment, where as North are being battered from pillar to post about being in strife ON and OFF the field.

This is just Jackson trying to divert attention from the fact that he signed the shocking stadium deals that are crippling Melbourne clubs.

What a knob.

Indeed, its worth asking why both the Bulldogs (preliminary final last year) and the Saints (currently undefeated AND preliminary final last year) have less members then the 'struggling' club in 16th spot who took out a wooden spoon last year.

we walked down this street once before... only to be shunted by the AFL... why would we trust what that prick says now...

it sounds like a man? trying to divert blame for shabby contract signing whilst he was in charge...

Merge these 2 teams. Send half the player to this new merger and the oher half to a new team in Tasmania.

That way in a few years the AFL could look like this

Victoria - 9 teams
Western Australia - 2 teams
South Australia - 2 teams
New South Wales - 2 teams
Queensland - 2 teams
Tasmania - 1 team

Thats good marketing from Stynes and co. I think we need to wait for the balance sheet which might say otherwise!

The Melbourne Kangaroos is a pretty sensible merge and the obvious one at this stage.

I wonder if "it makes sense" to Sam Kekovich?:p

Would have thought getting sponsors and record membership for Melbourne would reflect an upward trend and generate optimism.

But of course, they may as well just keep predicting doom and gloom as that will keep people signing up.

Keep on fishing.

A retired former administrator from a pissant town wants to merge the oldest club in the world that is once again a section of the MCC, has over 30,000 members, and new sponsorship deals that place it around 5th in the AFL. And yes, there's still lots more work to do.

Just about every South Australian thinks that there are too many clubs in Victoria. So what ? Must be a big news day.

Thats what Kangaroo fans thought last year!!!!!

It has been a good push in the right direction from the board but there is a VERY long way to go before the Dee's are out of the woods financially. It takes years of financial stability or growth to achieve that! Then you have to grow the 'brand' (hate that term) to match the larger clubs!
