You’re being a bit generous in your summary of Essendon and Carlton there.

Forget about Flags and grand finals and all that stuff. Carlton have been utterly shithouse.

They’ve won 5 wooden spoons over that period. They’ve been a revolving door of 7 Senior coaches - and that’s not including caretakers. They’ve been cellar dwellers.

By contrast Essendon have been mediocre - completely average - when they haven’t been embroiled in the biggest scandal ever in the VFL / AFL that took them to the edge of no longer existing.

Since their last premiership in 2000 we’ve won 2 premierships. Meanwhile Carlton and Essendon have 6 wooden spoons between them, and we have 0.:D

My kids only know Carlton and Essendon as minnows that are to be laughed at rather than respected. My 8yo started taking an interest in 2022 and took a shine to Bobby when I showed him his GWS highlights when we traded for him. Now he just thinks your favourite player either wins a flag, a Norm Smith or Mark Of The Year most years. The innocence of youth without the pain of our history. 😂

Can kinda relate - I started following Collingwood in 1976 when we won the wooden spoon. Pretty soon I just kinda expected we play in the Grand Final every year.

Anyone under the age of 35 doesn't know how good they've got it as they've grown up without ever remembering Carlton and Essendon winning flags and being contenders.

We're living in a golden age: 25 years without a Carlton or Essendon flag has not only never happened before but it had never been even close to happening. The previous longest period was 14 years back between 1924 and 1938.

Not only have they not won, neither team has played in a GF for 24 years, with the previous record drought being only 8 years.
how wonderful

Meanwhile, we've won 2010 and 2023 - should have won in 2018 and look the only one of the three to be a contender this year.

One thing that the Dons and Blues also have in common is handing out long term deals to average players

The Dons are the bigger culprits, handing out six to seven year deals to players like McGrath, McKay, Parish etc

And Papley is not on our list.

I'm 30 (soon to be 31) and I can only recall the tail end of Essendon's dominance under Sheedy, so we're talking 2000-2001.

Never seen Carlton win a flag in my lifetime. Long may it continue.

The last 25 years have been blissful as a Collingwood supporter.

You don’t know how lucky you are.

Seeing Carlton win a flag, and especially against us - unspeakably painful and traumatic.
