...was that so many great AFL players could be superstars if only they had some quality playing alongside them week to week - case in point, Fev and Foley.

It's sad to think a number of AFL players will never reach their full potential purely because they are playing for the wrong team at the wrong time.

Thats why a player like Nathan Buckley was a superstar cos he was a great player in the pies dark years and a star in there grand final years 03 brownlow

I feel for a bloke like Rob Harvey

I don't think a player in a great team is a superstar unless they are extremely special. Its the players who play in crap teams and play great footy week in week out which are the superstars. It takes a pretty special player to do that. Fev is a perfect example.

Intersting theory. So all the truly great players play in lower sides.

Let me know when to stop laughing :)

Fevola IS a superstar. He doesn't need to play anywhere else to be one because he already holds that status.

Yeah like Robert Harvey in the 90's ;)
The same Robert Harvey that was All-Australian 7 out of a possible 10 times (including 6 times in a row) in the 90's? Robert Harvey was still a superstar even when the Saints were shithouse. There's no doubt that playing in a good team makes you look better but true superstars will dominate no matter who is around them. IMO Fev already is an elite player and Foley is marching toward that status, if not already there.

In regards to Rutten being out of his depth, in a game where there was little or no defensive pressure and with the quality of the guys delivering the ball always going to be tough for all defenders one on one.....

Don't agree with this whole theory

When I played, I always looked better in a crap team because they always gave me the ball. (Like Pavlich).

When I was in a great team, I didn't have as much impact because there were better players getting the ball.

Bartel would look better playing for Essendon than he does at the cats because the rest of essendon are duds

Was that a pile of turds in the forward line would have presented a better option than Mooney. Absolutely horrible selection - simply overrated. Oh, and Cross would have played better than half the Dream Team players: Cross > Enright any day of the week.

I dont agree with this theory much either. I beleive real champions make their team good. Yes they bring other middle class players up a level, but generally speaking a great player will always make a team great. Look at Juddy, from when he first went there, the success west coast had, and then when he left.

As much as i dislike collingwood. I was cheering them on against the lions in 02, just because i really wanted them to win for bucks. He is a champion.

Are you aware that Cross is a midfielder and Enright is a utility/defender? They were not competing for the same spot.

But - there were far too many Geelong players picked, Mooney should not have been there, the DT was too tall to begin with. Enright was very lucky.
However, I thought Stokes and Kelly were very lucky to be there but they went OK.
Selwood showed he can win his own ball even in that company, but his disposal was not up to elite standard.

Mooney is good player, but if they were truly seeking balance, he wouldnt have been selected for lat night.

In hindsight, Pav, Buddy and Richo would have been a far better set up for the DT.

But hey, hindsight is 20/20. Mooney plays a role for Geelong that cant be underrated, but if they had a Fevola/Pav to select, in all fairness, he wouldnt get a look in.

I agree with you on Mooney, but Stokes and Kelly have been two of the cats bets players this year. based on current form, they deserved to be there.

As for the whole champions thing, Fevola in a good side would be unstoppable. Similiar to what Buddy is now, but even more so because he is actually accurate. Its kind of scary, actually, how good Fevola could be.
