Tasmania is blowing up over location and stadium. ****ing LOL. Sorry to any Tasmanian in here but gee whiz theres a long way to go for a club to officially be announced down there.

I went the early crow saying there would be no team in Tasmania. Right now, at this timeline. Tasmania wont be filling an AFL team by 2028. Colby Mckercher will be retiring before they get a team

Melbourne FC denies club culture issues

The Melbourne Football Club has denied it has a cultural issue. Melbourne FC Chief Executive Gary Pert and Coach Simon Goodwin have both publicly defended allegations against the club. The Demons have faced offseason troubles as rumours circulate of a fractured club culture. Mr Pert has written an open letter to fans addressing these rumours with a particular focus on separate situations including Clayton Oliver, Joel Smith and Coach Simon Goodwin. Oliver and Smith are both off on notice currently but Mr Pert claims this is due to separate behavioural issues as opposed to a broader club problem. Goodwin also appeared on SEN Radio on Tuesday morning, again denying these rumours.

Melbourne footballer Joel Smith is facing a suspension of two years — and possibly longer — for taking cocaine.
Smith on Tuesday received a report from Sports Integrity Australia (SIA), which is believed to have found him guilty of taking a performance enhancing drug.
It’s expected Smith will fight the bombshell finding.
The hearing took place before Christmas.
Smith, who turns 28 next month, tested positive for cocaine on game day last year.
The urine sample was collected after the Demons defeated Hawthorn by 27 points at the MCG in round 23.
Smith’s appeal would centre on his camp successfully arguing that only a minuscule amount of cocaine was found in his system, ruling out the performance-enhancing finding.

AFL spokesperson Jay Allen said: “The AFL advises that the matter involving Joel Smith of the Melbourne Football Club being investigated by Sport Integrity Australia (SIA) under the Australian Football Anti-Doping Code is ongoing.
“Joel remains provisionally suspended and as such he is not permitted to participate in Melbourne’s pre-season training when it recommences in the coming days.
“Due to the ongoing nature of the anti-doping process the AFL will not comment further at this time.”
The AFL Players Association is aware of the SIA letter to Smith.
It is understood SIA did not impose a penalty on the Demons forward, but sources told this masthead the findings pointed to at least a two-year suspension.
The Smith and Demons camps had been hopeful that the swingman would escape with a three-month ban under WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) rules introduced in 2021.
The clause to escape with a three-month suspension for cocaine or marijuana centres on an athlete agreeing to undergo treatment for substance abuse.
They also must prove “the substance was used out-of-competition and that its use was unrelated to sporting performance”.
Smith’s issue is that cocaine was detected in his system during competition.
The Herald Sun exclusively revealed on October 19 that the AFL had a fresh drug scandal on its hands following a positive test.

A two-year suspension shapes as a hammer blow for a club firmly in premiership mode, but severely lacking firepower and connection forward of the ball.
Smith and Bayley Fritsch led Melbourne’s goalkicking in last year’s finals series, each kicking four goals as the club was eliminated in straight sets at the MCG for the second consecutive season.
Smith signed a two-year contract extension midway through 2022, with that deal expiring at the end of the coming season.
If Smith fails in his bid to overturn any ban, it could place his career in jeopardy.
The SIA finding comes only weeks after Smith announced on social media his engagement to girlfriend Elise Carroll, with whom he shares a daughter, Tilly.
Several footy greats had earlier hit out at the possibility of Smith serving three months out of competition.
“They (the AFL) seem to reach in and find things that can minimise the impact of the penalty,” coaching legend Mick Malthouse said.
“Unfortunately, the AFL is always about image. If you have a soft penalty, you get a soft result. It’s got to be very, very harsh first up.”
Smith, the son of Dees great Shaun Smith, has played 42 games since he was signed as a Category B rookie in 2016.

I see that there is a space under the table.
Go to court, appeal, pay $20 fine and keep playing?

Which row do you land on for Sack coach, rebuild, overachieve then recruit spuds?

Is the chance card including “AFL salary cap breach and strips of draft picks, collect priority picks and start again”?

Given Benny Cousins is now clean and on the straight and narrow. It might be worth the Dees giving him a call, and getting him to sit down with Clarry.
Just to say it's not worth throwing everything away on the gear. And while he eventually came out the other side, it was a fraught journey and not a path he'd recommend going down.

What could possibly go wrong with that idea?

And while we're at it, I'd be limiting contact between Jy and Clarry to a weekly Zoom session. Better yet, MS Teams. "Zoom" might give the demon boy some ideas.

Doesn't necessarily have to be Ben, could be any former footballer who has had substance issues and come out the other side. Gavin Crosisca another option

Obviously Clarry isn't listening to anyone at the club. Someone who's been down a similar path, can sit him down and tell him it's not worth throwing his career away.

Don't get me wrong - I agree - Clarry needs somebody who's been there to tell him the bitter truth from there direct experience. But will he listen?

Doing some thinking on a new fixture for a 20 team comp. Let’s assume it’s Tassie and Canberra that enter the comp.

That leaves 10 vic teams and 10 non vic teams.

The afl create 2 divisions

Div 1 - all vic teams

Div 2 - all non Vic teams

It’s a 24 round season where you play 23 games with a bye.

Div 1, all vic teams play each other twice, home and away every year. The remaining 5 games are all away travels to teams from Div 2.

Div 2, also play each other twice, home and away. And then play 5 home games against vic teams.

West coast travelled 11 times in 2023, this system would see that reduced to 8.

This fixture should see a big increase in crowd numbers, with vic clubs no longer hosting interstate clubs.

It reduces travel for all teams.

Thoughts?

That's the million dollar question. Literally, given that's what he's getting paid and would be throwing away.

It's definitely worth a try, but only Clarry can decide whether he takes the advice on. For now his future in his still in his own hands. If he doesn't clean himself up in the next 12 months, then that may not to be the case anymore.

So no Non-Vic player ever plays at the MCG? Sure they'd be thrilled playing the GF there having never played there ever. And all Victorian members only get 9 games on their ticket, and non-Vic ones get 14? All Victorian teams are on the road for 5 solid weeks before the finals? I like creative ideas but this has some holes in it. I prefer this model...

Each team has 19 opponents. They play each one of them once and then the top 8 play in the same finals system we have now. Simples.

Some good points you make.

Firstly, one of the other changes I’d make with this is highest ranked team hosts grand final. That should make the interstate teams happy (er).

The 5 away interstate games aren’t in a block. But spread throughout the year.

Yes, I didn’t think of the reduction in membership rights. Not a big deal for us, we go from 8 games to 9. But certainly for the other vic teams.

It would be massive for the financial prospects and crowd numbers for the vic clubs though. Our bottom line would be spectacular and our future financially assured

The first point simply isn't going to happen. Not until the 2050s at least anyway.

And whilst North may be alright with it, sell that to South Melbourne or Fitzroy fans (or Melbourne based fans of non-Vic teams , and vice versa) who will basically never easily see their team play ever again.

Another issue for me would be not every team playing every other team during the year. You could go several years and never play a particular opponent or at a particular venue. Imagine having a Carey/Jakovich rivalry on the go except that they actually haven't graced the same ground for 4 years.
