Captain Charles Hazlitt Upham VC* (21 September 1908 – 22 November 1994)
was a New Zealand soldier who earned the Victoria Cross twice during the
Second World War: in Crete in May 1941, and at Ruweisat Ridge, Egypt, in July 1942.

His family have returned the medals because it all means nothing compared to
James Hird not having a lock up garage for his Kia.

Sophie Delezio.

Sophie first came to the attention of the public on 15 December 2003 when two years old at the time, were badly injured when she was trapped under a burning car which had crashed through a gate into the Roundhouse Childcare Centre in Sydney. Sophie suffered burns to 85% of her body and lost both feet, one hand, and her right ear.

On 5 May 2006 Sophie made national headlines a second time when she was again badly injured in a road accident. While being pushed across a crossing by her nanny in a wheelchair (her service Tara by her side) near her home in Sydney's northern beaches, she was hit by a car and thrown 18 metres. Sophie suffered a heart attack, a broken jaw, a broken shoulder, bruising to her head, numerous rib fractures and a tear to her left lung.

But the mental strain of these incidents was nothing compared to what Hird had to go through when a bad response affected 85% of his skin. Sophie herself has said she can't even begin to understand the strain Hird has been under.

John Simpson Kirkpatrick

Compared to James, John Simpson and his donkey were cowards.

Vasily Zaitsev- the master sniper of Stalingrad

220px-Vasily.Zaitsev.jpg

With his rifle he create fear amongst the German 6th Army in Stalingrad. Hero of the Soviet Union.

Compared to James, a powder puff...

Saw a guy in a wheelchair, paralyzed the neck up the other day. Said 'hey, at least you haven't had to put up with the stress James Hird has gone through the last few months.." I reckon I made him feel way better about the situation.

Why would he be in a wheelchair is he is paralysed from the neck up?
Wouldn't his problem be eating, talking and blinking not walking or using his arms?

Sir Douglas Bader the British WWII pilot who fought in the Battle of Britain even though he didn't have any legs
Douglas_Bader.jpg

Bader joined the RAF in 1928, and was commissioned in 1930. In December 1931, while attempting some aerobatics, he crashed and lost both his legs. Having been on the brink of death, he recovered, retook flight training, passed his check flights and then requested reactivation as a pilot. Although there were no regulations applicable to his situation, he was retired against his will on medical grounds. After the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939, however, Bader returned to the RAF and was accepted as a pilot. He scored his first victories over Dunkirk during the Battle of France in 1940. He then took part in the Battle of Britain and became a friend and supporter of Air Vice-Marshal Trafford Leigh-Mallory and his "Big Wing" experiments.
In August 1941, Bader bailed out over German-occupied France and was captured. Despite his disability, Bader made a number of escape attempts and was eventually sent to the POW camp at Colditz Castle. He remained there until April 1945 when the camp was liberated

LukeDarcysmall.jpg

Not a bad effort by Big Boy Bader but if he had the mental drive of James Hird he would have been able to escape on his first attempt

Why would he be in a wheelchair is he is paralysed from the neck up?

He was in a wheelchair because Darce had him superglued to it, while showing him slides of Hirdy's greatest moments....

a lot like that scene from 'red dragon'... why did you write lies about hirdy?

Reuben "hurricane" Carter, the man the authorities came to blame. Accused and sentenced to prison for 3 murders, a successful boxing career was cut short. Ended up being acquitted after years in prison.

Luke Darcy has called on musical great John Farnham to write and perform a song like Bob Dylan did in an effort to clear James Hirds name.

His father, Chris Saunders, and uncle, William Reginald Rawlings, had served with the first AIF. Reg was named after his uncle, who served in the 29th Battalion and was awarded a Military Medal for “displaying rare bravery in the performance of his duty … his irresistible dash and courage set a wonderful example to the remainder of the team”.

Reg enlisted in the second AIF (2/7th Battalion of the 6th Australian Division) in April 1940. His outstanding leadership skills, personable character and sporting skills were quickly recognized by his superiors, as he was promoted to the rank of lance corporal within six weeks. Three months later, he was promoted to sergeant.

Reg’s brother Harry was now nearing his 18th birthday; in a hurry to enlist, he convinced the recruiting officer that he was old enough, and joined the 2/14th Battalion. Reg and Harry met up while they were camped near each other in Palestine and took leave together in Jerusalem.

It was while Reg was serving in New Guinea that Harry was killed in action on the Kokoda Trail. It was also while he was in New Guinea that he was nominated for promotion to a commissioned rank – the first Aboriginal Australian to have reached this level of command in the Australian Army.

Reg later served in the Korean War, where he was promoted to captain in charge of “C” Company of the 3rd Battalion, and took part in the famous battle of Kapyong in 1951. It was during this battle that the battalion was awarded a US Presidential Unit Citation.

A hero from a family of heros but after the war he could only get a job as a Tram Conductor.

But nothing compared to James Hird.

Antoinette Tuff talked a potential school shooter into surrendering to police in Georgia last week while being held at gunpoint. To the uninformed, this may seem like a great example of courage and mental strength in the face of adversity.

James would have gotten him 'off-site' far quicker.

Raoul Wallenberg
Swedish Diplomat

Immediately following his arrival as First Secretary to the Swedish embassy in Budapest in July 1944, Wallenberg used his diplomatic status to issue “protective passports” to thousands of Jews, identifying them as Swedish citizens, thereby preventing their deportation to death camps. He would often personally intervene to obtain the release of these passport bearers, including those with forged documents, from the Jews who were forced to march toward the Austrian-Hungarian border for deportation, saving as many lives as possible. He even rented more than 30 buildings to house about 10,000 Jewish refugees, putting up fake signs as “The Swedish Research Institute” and hanging the Swedish flag to avoid detection. All in all, this soft-spoken Swede is credited to have rescued more Jews than any single rescuer or country, around 100,000 of them; but he was unable to save his own. In January 1945, he was taken by the Soviet Red Army troops to a Soviet prison, where he was reported to have died in 1947, although the exact circumstances of his death are still very much in dispute.

While that's all very admirable, outwitting the Nazi's is nothing compared to trying to outwit ASADA/WADA inspectors!

Frank_Grimes_(Official_Image).PNG

"... And now, "Kent's People!" Tonight's inspiring story is about Frank Grimes, a thirty-five-year-old Springfieldianite who's earned everything the hard way, but never let adversity get him down... Abandoned by his parents at age four, Frank never got to go to school... He spent his childhood years as a delivery boy, delivering toys to more fortunate children. Then, on his eighteenth birthday, he was blown up in a silo explosion... During his long recuperation he taught himself to hear and feel pain again. As the years passed, he used his few leisure moments each day to study science by mail. And, last week, Frank Grimes, the man who had to struggle for everything he ever got, received his correspondence school diploma in nuclear physics -- with a minor in determination..."

Grimey would be reaching for the rope within a week of reading an article about how he needs to bear some responsibility for overseeing a systematic doping program.

Man on airplane stuck next to Fat russian wearing underpants for 36 hour plane flight from Belaruss to Capetown had nothing to worry about when he heard about what poor brave James had been through. The man further went on to say he was amazed James hadn't crumbled and buckled.

Passengers of United Airlines flight 91.
Forced their way into the cockpit in an attempt to wrestle back control of their highjacked airliner from crazed, knife weilding muslim terrorists on September 11th, 2001 to avert a fourth tragedy that was destined for more mindless death and destruction which ultimately led to the deaths of all onboard.

If only they had the mental fortitude of James Hird then perhaps they could've tried a little harder and stopped the other 3 highjackings!

Another good call, Darce. :thumbsu:

Now James likes a good Aryan so I bring you the Blonde Knight of the Luftwaffe - Erich Hartmann

Erich_Hartmann-1.jpg

Erich was one of James' icons as he shot down 352 allied aircraft during World War 2 ( 345 Russian) and even the Russians put a price on his head for anyone who shot him done. After the war , he was shipped to Russia and imprisoned for 10 years by the Russians as a war criminal.

****ing pussy compared to James.

TROY BROADBRIDGE

image.jpg

Melbourne career (2001–2004)
Broadbridge began his career as a defender with Port Adelaide in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL), and was drafted by the Melbourne Football Club at the beginning of the 2001 AFL season. He won the club's Most Improved Player award in 2001, and became a regular in the side, playing a total of 40 games over his three seasons.
His debut was for Melbourne was in Round 8, 2001, when they met Essendon for the first time since Melbourne's 2000 Grand Final loss. Melbourne lost this match by a kick. He played his final league game against Essendon as well, in the 2004 finals, and again Melbourne lost by under a kick.
Marriage and death

Broadbridge married Trisha Silvers on 18 December 2004. On 26 December, while spending his honeymoon in Phi Phi, Thailand, he was swept out to sea by the tsunami which followed the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake. His father located his body in a Thai morgue on 3 January 2005.

If only Troy had taken those swimming lessons and shown the same intestinal fortitude under great adversity as James Hird.....

Darc........calling it as he sees it again!

Frodo Baggins,

Under great adversity, opposed by malignant foes, assisted by a small band, but ultimately with only his close friend for much of the journey he set out, and finally managed, to destroy a ring that would enslave all. His heroics were immortalised in book and movie form.

James Hird

Under great adversity, opposed by malignant foes (AFL), assisted by a small band (Corcran, Dank, Robinson, Bomber, Reid), but ultimately with only his close companion for much of the journey (Bomber) he set out, and finally managed to destroy a great club. His heroics were immortalised by Luke Darcy.
