I hate it when you hear or see this kind of stuff.

Here is some info...

Group One star He's No Pie Eater dead
Dual Group One winner He's No Pie Eater has been put down after suffering a freak injury at trackwork this morning.

Trainer Graeme Rogerson said the colt shattered his shoulder as he worked into a canter after a leisurely trot around the Randwick track.

The winner of the Chipping Norton Stakes and Rosehill Guineas during the autumn carnival, He's No Pie Eater gained a cult following due to his unusual name.

Rogerson and managing owner David Reid had been negotiating a multi million dollar deal with an unnamed stud for He's No Pie Eater.

Disappointing for the racing and breeding industry.

The owners won't be totally out of pocket - insurance will come their way.

Not much consolation I'd suggest, especially if you've got your hands on a fairly good one like the pie eater.

While I'd always have insurance as an owner, I'd expect they'd be feeling lower than shark s**t today.

The coin from being insured won't really ease the pain.

I'm not sure how 'close' connections would have become to the horse.

Purely they would become attached to a horse because its wins and generates them money... it would be foolish to think otherwise. It is very rare connections would have the same compassion for a horse that has gone 30 starts for 1 win and a couple of placings. (at this level)

Lets be serious about this... connections say 'xxx' is a champion horse, fantastic, blah blah... thats easy to say when your pocket has just been lined with 100's of thousands of $$$!!

Even though they and perhaps you may think it is devestating I would say yes it is for the horse, but no, not for the connections. Its is a significant blow to the future success they could have had but I'm sure they will move on... especially considering he only really had the one race to his name in terms of genuine success...?

The only person I believe would feel genuine connection is the trainers staff who worked closely with the horse day to day.

When this happens.... I'm no expert... but I question if there is more we can do to guarentee the safety of these horses who earn punters, bookies and owners alike a lot of money (or maybe none)... are there a prevention, indication that something like this could be more likely to occur to one horse than another?

?

I would be shattered if I owned a horse and had to have it put down, regardless of how good it was. But I'm an animal lover. It's a disgrace that there are so many owners in it who wouldn't care.

As am I which is why I got annoyed and had to say that. In some instances, yes sure, but I'm pretty sure its all business for a lot of people at that level and accepted as a part of the game.... which it is, unfortunately

I take it you've never owned a horse, I lost one just before it's 1st race and you do get attached to them, they bring hope and lots of good times and when they go it's like losing family. Insurance doesn't usually cover all you've put in either. Many people pin their hopes on the one horse, trainers have several. Losing pie eater will be shattering.
