In many aspects, Wines' debut would have been an above average game for a mature-bodied midfielder. The inside bull had 24 possessions (16 contested), one goal and six inside 50s to be one of Port's best players in a 79-point win against Melbourne. The Echuca product was doing what he knows best from the very beginning, also winning three clearances and earning the first NAB AFL Rising Star nomination of the season before going on to finish third in the award, behind eventual winner Jaeger O'Meara
