How bad are these commentators. Don't get me wrong, I don't spend 24-7 baggin commentators the way some do on these boards BUT:

"Captain Insaneo"

as a nickname for Stirling Mortlock????? Where the f*ck did that come from, did I miss a meeting?

It'd be from the Adam Sandler movie 'The Waterboy' i guess....... but how Mortlock earned that one i'm unsure :)

Well at least it is entertaining - remember the guy from Bermuda in the circket World cup? If it gives us a laugh, why not play the minnows!

Best catch ever. :D

But yeah, definately play the minnows - it makes the group stages interesting. Watching the US take it up to England and get that late try was quality. :thumbsu:

i thought all in all wasn't a bad weekends rugby considering there are so many big teams agains the minnows.

was impressed with australia despite a few problems. someone was bagging them for taking the penalty but i think that's a good thing. It shows when playing these minnow teams you should be focussing on the processes rather than the final result. In most cases as well (as ended up with Australia) both come to fruition.

I have a bit of a theory on the Kiwis failures at world cups. when playing these minnow nations they are just scoring tries, throwing the ball around and almost playing basketball with a football. But you can't do that sort of stuff against the better nations like England (in 03), France, Australia and South Africa etc,.

But back to the rugby on the weekend.

The reaction in Ireland to what happened against Namibia has been huge and they are copping a pounding in the press. I thought in the first half they weren' too bad (despite two butchered tries from Hickie and Trimble) and Namibia were playing very well to restrict them.

But come second half Ireland were terrible and outscored by Namibia.

Argentina beating France was great for the tournament because it now throws up a huge variable in that pool. It's also very possible now for Argies to top that group and play Italy or Scotland which will mean a near certain Semi Final birth for Argentina.

England were terrible v USA and it was great ;)

All in all USA, Canada and Namibia all showed why there is value in playing these minnow nations and they have certainly showed massive improvement from last world cup, even if the teams playing them didn't play particularly well.

And for the Kiwis to lose this tournament though is going to take a massive performance from some time in the QF, SF or Final. Italy are a pretty good team in reality and they were just dominated.

One last thing,

when teams are equal on points, the only thing's that should matter are their performances against the teams they are level on. It's quite possible now that Argies, Ireland and France all end up even. The tie-breaker should be points differential between those three teams, and not include the matches against Namibia and Georgia. It is unfair for one team to be punished if they happen to play a game in pouring rain and can only run in a 30 point win, when the other team runs in a 100 point win in great conditions....

Was very excited to see the French get beaten by the Pumas- the ARgies are a very underrated team and I am glad to see that they have claimed a pretty big scalp already.
Australia played some good Rugby which is a good sign, even though it is against Japan it was still good to see us put points on the board. This weekend will be the big test oviously- Wales in Cardiff is a big game for us and if we are serious about challenging for the Cup then we have to put together a convincing performance.
As for Kiwi's, I never judge there performances until the quarter finals stage as they usually find someway to throw away the tournament.

To those in the know:

1) Any chance France might not get through to the quarters?
2) Any chance Italy could get through ahead of Scotland?
3) Any chance Fiji could get through ahead of Wales?

1 - big chance now. Lose to Ireland and its lights out.

Beat Ireland and it throws up one of two situations: 1st: Argies 4 wins, 2nd: France 3 wins, 3rd: Ireland 2 wins.
or
All teams on 3 wins which then goes down to bonus points and points differential which is a bit of a gamble.

After the 6 nations you would say France-Ireland are about as 50/50 as you could get, but Ireland have been played dismisally in the build up and France haven't been a whole lot better so its hard to gauge whether they're recent form has been an abboration or whether the teams are very much in a rut.

2 - Definetaly. They beat Italy in the 6 nations but i'd say their confidence took a pummeling against the Kiwis. I don't think they'll beat Scotland twice in a year but still a good chance. If i was betting i'd give Scotland a 66% chance of winning, and Italy 33% chance.

3 - Less like than number 2. I'd give Fiji a one in ten chance of beating Wales. But if Wales play like they did in the first half against Canada then Fiji will beat them.

More likely than that is Samoa beating England taking the second spot in Pool A. I'd give that about a 25% chance of happening. Possibly more now after Samoa's good first half v South Africa (fitness big problem for them though) and England's performance against USA.

One thing you can just about lock in now as that the three tri nations teams will finish their group in first. Saffers and Kiwis definetaly. Only doubt is that just maaaaybe Wales can upset Australia, but i'd give that only about a 15% chance of happening. If it wasn't being played in Wales it would be closer to 5%.
