Forget about 6-6-6, forget about long kick outs. Forget about interchanges and 3rd man up in the rucks etc.
There has been one massive change in the game.
Players over possessing the ball is the biggest blight/change on the game
Theres are the totals for players averaging over 25 disposals

2000 there were 11
2001 there were 7
2002 there were 2
2003 there were 7
2004 there were 3
2005 there were 4
2006 there were 9

2007 there were 15
2010 there were 26

2018 there were 44!

In the year 2002 there were only 12 players average over 10 handballs a game
In 2018 there were 118 players who averaged 10 handballs a game

What does this all point to?
Alistair Clarksons suggestion of only allowing the first handball prior opportunity will help fix this imbalance
Players first instincts are now to handball the ball, you need that to swing back to looking run an kick the ball.

Players will be roasted for handballing to a stationary target and will look to kick more often than handball. The more you kick the more that players will hold back from running towards you because they will need to guard the space behind them not just look for the tackle.
The press only works when teams over handball, if they start to kick more then teams will sag off an congestion will fall away.

Next year in the JLT I would love to see these rules tried, I think this is a much better solution than the zones that feel inevitable

With these new rules you can remove all of the measures, as this will have the change desired

Worst post on BF.

(NOTE: This is inclusive of the last 15 years of Blues supporters claiming this year is their year. This is still worse than that. )

Not sure this would work irl but is a good concept. We don’t need to make the game harder to officiate though. It’s hard enough as it is.
While we’re at it. Reintroduce the third man up and get rid of that stupid 50m rule.

I actually think it would be easier for the umpires as it creates a much more black and white rule. You receive a handball from a teammate and you are tackled then it is a free kick against every single time. A lot less room for interpretation or guessing there.

IMO the rule we need to fix the congestion is the last ball out rule. ball goes out the team that possessed it last gives away a free kick. but it has to be a clear possession, still throw in if it comes off a pack/fumble.

we having lots of forward 50 entries where the aim is kick the ball to the pocket and set up the zone. the team that clears kicks it the wing to force a stoppage and they set up their zone etc. last possession would eliminate this territory battle and reduce stoppages significantly.

My only problem with the last touch out of bounds rule is I remember years ago the AFL tried it in the NAB cup and it lead to a lot of mistakes as Umpire's did not necessarily pick the correct way the free kick was going.

not 'last touch' but 'last disposal'. I agree last touch would be hell to adjudicate. if it's not a clear disposal then throw it.

it would encourage much more play through the middle of the ground as well which is a good thing.

Makes sense to me.
But tiges would still get flogged Thursday due to not getting the ball and pies kicking not handballing!

West Coast 18th for handballs in 2018, Richmond 17th in 2017. Seems to me there is already enough incentive to kick the ball.

True that Collingwood were ranked first in that stat last year and almost won the grand final, revealingly a match in which they handpassed much less than usual (133 times, down from their season average of 182).

The easiest way to ease congestion is to pay 50 metres every time someone holds up play from a mark or free kick. To often a player will lay on top of the player who is to get the ball and fain difficulty getting up. Players also argue with umpires while holding on to the ball to allow the team mates to get back. Pay the 50 metre penalty quicker a players will quickly learn.

I know it's early but I feel the new rules are restricting the scoring, when I thought the idea to to help increase scores.
Usually the early season games produce high scores and then it dries up a bit, but I feel the scores are a lot lower than normal at this stage of the season compared with other years. Hope things free up a bit as the season goes on.

I think the real issue now is that most teams just prefer to play it safe, rather than take risks with bold attacking footy. So maybe the best solution for congestion is a simple one: just give teams a bonus point on the ladder if they score over 100 (even if they lose). If we give real rewards to players and coaches for playing like that, then they'll actually want to play attacking footy and we'll see a lot more of it.

Thanks Gerard, why not draw circles around th3 players and penalise anyone getting within 10 meters of another player as well

Guessing you've only seen 5 years of footy in your life and you think this is what the game should look like
