I've been trying to work out a more realistic footy dice game.

Later I'll post my ideas so far.
That's what I have been trying to do with my Dice Cricket comp, especially the T20s

Some of my ideas were getting more complicated, with ideas around custom dice. Each side would get, say, 40 dice with different attributes and then pick their team of 22 from those dice. They'd have attacking, defence, ruck etc attributes.

Others were ideas around secretly assigning dice to each of three tracks up the field (either wing or up the guts) then deciding the bounce and the winner got to pick the track, an umpire dice, an injury dice etc etc.

These are more along the lines of a simulation of the game over the abstraction of just rolling dice and using the numbers to work out a score.

My method for dice football is as follows:
- each team in the league is assigned a strength rating between 1 and 4, or if you don't mind semi-unrealistic blowouts, 0 and 5.
- Each quarter starts with the clock at 20 minutes, and before each score, one die is rolled, the number rolled halved and subtracted from the remaining time.
- After that roll, roll to determine which team scored at that time. This is where the strength ratings come in. If there is a disparity of one between the teams, then for one quarter the chance of the better team having had that score will be 4/6; if the disparity is two, the chance is 4/6 for two quarters; if the disparity is three, the chance is 4/6 for the entire match. For home ground advantage, add one point to the rating of the home team.
- Having determined who scores, determine what they scored: 1, 2 or 3 is a behind; 4, 5 or 6 is a goal.
- Repeat the above until the quarter ends, and then the match.

It comes out a little low-scoring (scores are often in the 60-70 range, and a large win is more often something like 120-20), but overall works fairly well in terms of largely producing realistic results.

Just did two quick examples of the above:
A strength 3 team playing at home against a strength 4 club (so the weighting is negated):
Strength 3 Club: 3.3, 7.6, 10.8, 13.14 (92)
Strength 4 Club: 3.3, 4.6, 8.8, 11.8 (74)

A strength 4 team playing home against a strength 1 team (so a 4/6 weighting on all quarters, then an additional weighting on one quarter to make it 5/6):
Strength 4 Club: 4.6, 6.10, 12.16, 14.21 (105)
Strength 1 Club: 2.0, 4.2, 5.2, 8.4 (52)

So not as unrealistic scoreline-wise as I'd remembered it being.

I'm not trying to hijack your thread here, but I just had a look in the old books and folders and found my old dice footy stuff.
Here's a look at my teams from the 1970s.
Drawn in the style they were presented in back then.

Wow! Some good stuff there mero. Maybe start a thread on this. And yes I am happy to see other people's dice footy stuff on this thread

I use a deck of playing cards for my "dice footy" games.

Here's how it works:

1. Shuffle cards
2. Reveal top card
3. If black, score applies to home team: if red, away team
4. If even number, goal scored: if odd, behind scored
5. If card is A, J, Q or K, the next card automatically goes to other team (ie if a black J is revealed, the next score goes to away team
6. If next card is also A, J, Q or K, it obviously goes back to other team
7. When an A, J, Q or K has been revealed 4 times, quarter ends
8. Shuffle again and continue match until all four quarters complete

Scores are extremely realistic. If someone wants to have a go at a game and let us know what score you get!

Black: 1.0, 1.0, 6.2, 8.6 (54)
Red: 1.1, 5.2, 7.6, 9.9 (63)

Red: 5.2, 5.2, 6.4, 7.7 (49)
Black: 8.0, 9.4, 9.5, 10.8 (68)

Am I doing it wrong? It seems to me any game played is capped at 36 scoring shots, which seems too low - or am I supposed to count the face cards and the ace as goals and behinds in some way as well? Or reset the entire deck at the end of each quarter? I quite like the idea, but I get the feeling I'm not doing it right...

Hmm seems the scores are a little low. In fact, I'm pretty sure the problem is that you should restart the deck after each quarter! I'll give it a go and see what scores I get, feel free to try it again with reset deck after each quarter :)

I just got:

Home (black) 1.5.11 7.7.49 10.12.72 10.14.74
Away (red) 3.1.19 4.4.28 10.5.65 13.7.85

That seems better. Anyone else feel free to have a go and let me know what you get!

(And apologies to the OP for hijacking the thread a little, your drawings are amazing! :)

Not a close match, unfortunately, but yes, this seems a good deal more realistic score-wise. Knew there was probably something I was missing...

Roof on

Now here is the Fletcher Stadium, home of the Eastern bulldogs!
The ground, finished in 1995 has a non retractable roof in which half is glass. The dogs moved there from traditional home ground Willett Park in 1996 to attract more fans. Fletcher Stadium is a regular host of concerts, cricket and also soccer. It will host the 2014 Spensar Games in November. The stadium's naming rights was bought by Fletcher Constructions in 1994.
You are a very good drawer

Today's update will be the State Of Origin. State of Origin is played in the allstar weekend break, usually at just one venue and attracts thousands. From Left to right the teams are- Eastern,Western Northern and Southern. Western are the competition powerhouses, winning the last three years.

Considering there was no feedback for S.O.O, here is West Park Oval, home of the bloods.

Built next to the West Park ranges, the ground is one of the most picturesque in the country. However on game day it's a different story with the fans getting behind there team ferociously. Ranked by the SFLPA as the toughest ground to play at,the bloods have a firm home ground advantage.

Cool, kind of like new AO with the hill on the sides

Maybe include a PRT station. PRT is the system used at West Virginia University called Personal Rapid Transport and operates like a monorail. Every year during their homecoming week, the try and fit as many people into one PRT car (normally seats six) as possible, the current record is 99 people. Whatever you choose to use is at your discretion, I just think these could be some unique features to the ground on any in the case of the PRT (club livery on the PRTs).

Geez, that takes me back. Not very far back (went there last year), but back nonetheless. :p

I'm really impressed by the drawing style, especially the stadia. Out of curiosity, do you sort of have the concept of each ground's features before you start, or do you just add things in as you go along?

Yeh I have a fair idea of what I will be doing at the start. Some features though are added while I am drawing it though.

Why are the eastern clubs in the west and vice versa?
I thought someone would ask that. when I drew the map like 15 years ago it was like that so I just kept it the way it was.

Been watching this quietly and really loving it so far, and this is definitely my favorite stadium so far! I wish it were real so I could see a game there; I see what you mean by picturesque, with the river and footbridges behind the one goal. It makes me think a bit of the San Francisco Giants' ballpark, right up against the bay, though I'm sure West Park Oval would have nets or something in place on gamedays, since losing a football in the water is a bit different than losing a baseball!

Anyways, I'm really enjoying both learning about the concept of dice footy in general, and also of course seeing your fantastic drawings. Keep it up!

Thanks mate! I'm glad you like West Park Oval. I based this ground of New lands C.G in South Africa and the mongrel bit from Lathlain Park here in Perth . As you were relating the stadium to the home if the Giants, ironically it does host baseball! So I might post the ground as a baseball field. Thanks for paying attention to this thread. I really appreciate it.
