Plenty of reasons given in this article. The whole thing is pie in the sky stuff, just so that those private backers get access to prime land for other ventures.
Private backers wanting access to prime land for other venture Surely not ;)

There are currently only 5 players from Hobart area in the AFL men’s. 3 of those will retire in the next two years. What a dismal reflection on AFL Tasmania. The go home factor will be immense.

Participation numbers have had a massive boost in Tasmania post the announcement of the devils. They'll be churning out a lot of talent of their own, just like the suns are doing now.

Yeah it will take a few years but I think Tassie will have close to 3 players drafted per season on average when we get started, it might increase a bit after that.

And what if they don’t? Participation numbers doesn’t equal quality and from what I hear the academy they’ve set up is extremely poorly run.

Didn't they have like 4 picks in the top 30 or so of the draft last year?

Participation grew 27 percent this year and the afl wanna double it by 2028. 2 new junior clubs have also popped up.

Here's some info
As part of the AFL’s commitment to investing around $360 million in the state from now through to the first decade in the life of the new Tasmanian club, a significant portion of this funding will be going towards game development and end-to-end talent pathway programs for Tasmanian boys and girls, the equal to any in the country, including:
  • $93 million in game development – supporting and growing local footy
  • $33 million to develop young male and female talent in Tasmania.

See now this is interesting, the afl actually pay significant amounts for their new clubs and grassroots in the area, unlike the nrl, which the Aussie tax payer foots the entire bill for and they're never required to chip in anything. It pays to have mates in government.

You actually trust the figures they put out?

3 players all from Launceston in top 20 yes. I’m talking Hobart and the fear of home sickness.

21 total players on an AFL list are from Tasmania. I’d say around half that will still be on a list by 2028. What happens if some don’t come back?

I’m heavily involved in junior footy and I just can’t see us producing enough quality juniors. Particularly with the corrupt and incompetent selection process.

I mean to have only 5 players on a list from Hobart is pathetic. Yet the person in charge of selection and development has been there for over 15 years.
