If you buy a proper 4wd and go off road tyres and clearance are probably the most important thing. All these trendy SUVs are AWD, will help with handling on wet roads or gravel roads but aren't going to get very far off road.
We had one of the first Foresters and they were pretty good off road. Not super serious, but good enough for trundling around. Got another one a few years ago. much more a road car with come 4WD ability now.

Nowhere near as much funky stuff, but I preferred the old one. It just did the job, really well.

Yeah I got a Hilux dual cab. Pretty plain inside but tough as nails off road. My mate bought a new Ford Ranger, we went off road going to a fishing spot and his collision warning thingo was going beserk at all the trees and bushes. I think you can disable it but he didn't know how. It was constantly beeping all the way in lol.

First time I drove a front wheel drive was my girlfriends Pulsar years ago. I loved fanging it around corners as it was so small and low to the ground. Lost it big time one day around a corner in the wet,did a 360 didn't hit anything luckily.
