I reckon both areas are massively underrated for food. The best restaurants per capita are well north and west of the Yarra. Even further out puches harder than the outer east and south east.

Even at the bottom end, 3 star Northern and Western suburb places are like 4 star eastern and city places. Probably cause you've got an old wog cooking from the heart in them that knows his shit more than some Aussie upstart serving foam degustation sliders out of his Dads place in Camberwell.
