NRL The Titans and their rent

Western Force's ticket prices are ridiculous, it hurts the atmosphere at games as well. Why get 16,000 paying that when you could have 22,000 paying $45 for gold reserve, $35 silver reserve and $30 GA.

Those would definitely be fairer prices. The membership discounts aren't too bad, but they're still a pretty stiff dose. I looked into them this year, since the season is winding down on the Glory and I'm still a few thousand away on the Eagles waitlist (after four years). The Wildcats charge like wounded bulls but that's on a sold-out stadium and the word is when they go to the 12,000 seater they will slash ticket prices to get people in the door.

Better for a club to have bums on seats (and in catering cues) than to gouge on tickets.

and yet other venues.. like Stadium Australia... actually pay clubs to play there... how can that be?

Do the Titans have the catering rights or something? Thats the only way you could justify it, otherwise the stadium is taking a cut at both ends when the football club is the one actually delivering the business to them. It doesnt make sense unless the business savy of the club is non existant, does it?

You raise a great point in regards to the titans and their business acumen (or lack there of). Michael Searle does not have to report to anybody. No board of directors, shareholders - anyone. I think this lack of accountability is very dangerous in any business let alone one that has had independent commissions filing suits in courts. I think they need to restructure their corporate governance and implement some sort of plan to gain better ROI.

No doubt they have lots of fans. But they need to convert these fans into dishing out their hard earned in a way that is going to reap dividends for the club. How this can be done i'm not sure but no doubt their rent situation is killing them.

They ended up with Stadiums Queensland as a manager, who are to sporting clubs what ... well, Dracula is to necks. Some of the regulations I hear about regarding Suncorp, for instance, are ludicrous. I think the experience was informative to some others, because the AFL fought like crazy for management rights to Metricon.

Re: 2012 Melbourne Storm Thread

If anyone thinks the NRL will allow the Titans to die or have another change of identity while the AFL is throwing everything at the Gold Coast they don't know much.

Re: 2012 Melbourne Storm Thread

They will exist as Gold Coast but they will have a different name and colours.
This has happened with every other fail GC NRL team.

The NRL will happily let the club fail then step in and re-brand.

It also has nothing to do with what the AFL does. They need a GC team purely to appease the broadcasters so they can get top dollar.

Do some research.

It's not hard to think history will repeat itself.

Depends on who you believe, how accurate the story is etc.

I don't believe the ARLC will allow a SEQ club to fail. It's not 95-99 anymore.

With the debt, it depends on the servicing arrangements & exactly how much is tied to the RLC as opposed to the property arm. If they can offload the COE, that will help reduce the servicing arrangements for example. It's not as if they have to stump up 25 mill tomorrow.

It's a mess, but one that may be salvageable.

What pisses me off is it is shitty management and nothing to do with the sports potential on the coast that has created this situation.

GC have a massive role to play given the realistically cover not only the GC but northern NSW as well.

I'd suggest my knowledge of RL history on the coast is far greater than yours champ, so keep the attitude out of it.

Looking at the pic you posted, why dont you tell the truth? It's clear you are running some other agenda, would love to know what it is.

The article you are forming your opinion from references folding the club as "a last resort". Not the fait accompli you make it out to be.

As for your little pic.

Yes, the Giants/Seagulls failed in their original location. Has already been talked about on the relevant thread as to the reasons why.

The Chargers didn't fail. They were booted, with money in the bank, as part of the insane desire to only have 14 teams.

The NRL does not need the Gold Coast, they need South East Queensland. The Titans will be fine.

Titans statement on the club's financial position

The following is a statement from Jetstar Gold Coast Titans Managing Director Michael Searle in relation to the media speculation about the financial position of the club and its related entities.

The Titans have been working with NRL Management and the newly formed Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC) since September on a funding submission to assist the club’s related entities with cash flow pressures.

The pressure on the property arm came about because of the original Centre of Excellence building dispute which caused an escalation in costs relating to the completion of the building, additional rectification works and legal and funding costs totalling $6 million on top of the original contracted building amount.

Some people obviously overreacting a fair bit.

well that's the crust of it. searles dealings haven't been the best

Yep. Pretty much spot on Damo. Funny how times change. Treated as a demi god amongst some quarters due to his anti-AFL rhetoric, yet it turns out he could very well be a snake oil salesmen.

& it's RL that would hurt most rather than him.

But I do have faith in the commission to do what's necessary.

& in saying that, this is only the first of many tests the board ate going to face on cleaning up and dragging the game into the modern, professional age.
