[quote="Dockernut, post: 27694319, member: 73403"]How was his '18 step burst' through the middle on the weekend?? Umps were stargazing when he did it I reckon. One signalling to the other, "no don't blow your whistle, I want to see how this turns out"

They were probably spellbound at the beauty and grace that is Stephen Hill in full flight... I would just about sell the kids to watch that. Pure poetry in motion :hearts:

Hill is two years older than Gaff and has played nearly double the games of both Gaff (43) and Shuey (54) (Hill 91).

He is also supported by more accomplished midfielders ATM. When we get Kerr, Wellingham and Rosa back, we will see how they go then. I am guessing Kerr will be the player opposition tagg, not Gaff, if not at least he will have some support from Rosa on the other wing. At least wait until the kid has 50 games under his belt before we start proclaiming him useless.

Agreed.

Plus no one mock Gaff on his season average tackling of 1.0 per game dropping his career average from 1.3

It's not easy tackling and having your hair look that good.

Lyon let Kerr do as he wanted in his last derby, didnt he get 40+ touches? How did that affect the final score? Kerr is a gun no doubt but he will never be tagged again in a game against Freo, Wellingham has never seen a tag so I wouldnt be so confident that he will beat Crowley and gee I love how Eagles supporters cling to Rosa when he isnt playing then call for his head when he is.

Please point me to the posts that have proclaimed them useless. Gaff and Shuey have been afforded far more respect than Hill has, generally because most Freo posters have seen the difficulty of being a young midfielder and coping the number 1 tag without much support.

Just for posterity

West Coast's pronounced home-ground advantage at Patersons Stadium gives it a significant head-start. In 2013, so might its depth.
Take even a Kerr-less midfield. Try the following on for size – Embley, Matt Priddis, Scott Selwood, Andrew Gaff, Luke Shuey, Matt Rosa, Chris Masten – at least four of that group still clearly on the improve.
West Coast's stocks of tall timber around the ground and in attack – even with Quinten Lynch having departed for Collingwood – remains an awesome weapon. This season, Kennedy and Jack Darling, Cox and Naitanui, and the medium-sized Josh Hill, get LeCras and Nicoski back for support.
And while the Eagles' defence is popularly viewed as their most vulnerable area, the reality is different. The rock of skipper Darren Glass now has the support of tough-as-nails Beau Waters, improving pair Eric Mackenzie and Will Schofield, and class rebounder Shannon Hurn.
The stocks of talent are impressive, and the balance of youth and seasoned campaigners perfect, with West Coast ranked fourth for age and games experience. Just a little more luck on the injury front in this most even of seasons, and I think a fourth AFL premiership is headed Perth's way.

The problem with articles like this in the pre-season is that they built up Gaff, Shuey, Masten as being elite enough to compete with premier midfielders. All three of them can be shut down, and Kerr even when he gets back isn't damaging. The only mid on that list that didn't play is Rosa, so it's not so much 'depth' that is being tested, but exposing the fact their midfield isn't as good as people think.

Nick Naitanui is not overrated. He is the difference between West Coast being potential premiers and not making finals.

Am I the only one that laughs about how its gone from "No Sandilands, no Freo" to "No Nic Nat, No West Coast" but the media as biased as they are never mention it!

You can say that again.

Though I'm surprised the AFL comp is still running without Nic Nat playing

I loved how Luke Shuey came out and said after being run down from behind 3 times in that finals game against Collingwood in 2011 that it would never happen again.

One other player for the Eagles who tries hard but gets pushed off the ball like a 3 year old girl is the number 3 draft pick Chris "Achmed" Masten.

The opposition seem happy to let him rack up the possessions as he doesn't hurt you on the score board.

Has a smoking hot girlfriend though.

Is it relevant to the conversation? It's always relevant, when you have Google. ;)

Crap.

One day I was working the scoreboard on the outer at a Shark Park and Masten shanked 2 kicks on the wing.
One hit me in the head and the other knocked my thermos of hot milo all over my lap.

Lucky the first one hit you in the head, anywhere else might have done some damage. ;)
