Despite the fact that soccer is predominantly played with the feet, I don't think that entitles it to be called football. Although what gets me is how some people call rugby football. It's RUGBY FFS.

Soccer is a form of football, ie. Association Football. Either call it Association Football or its abbreviated form, soccer. When it causes conflict, like in Australia, it should be called soccer, not football. While you could say we should call our sport Aussie rules, most people call it AFL (which isn't right, but it's shorter).

Heard a interview with the famous British interviewer Micheal parkinson about sport and he is a big fan of cricket, soccer etc and he called soccer ... soccer about 10 times.... sheds real light on this for me.... for mine its the soccer community attempting to hijack footy or football from the traditional codes in OZ.

Not on.

Might've been because he was in this country and didn't want to cause confusion because he knows you heathens do not call the game by its proper name.

Yeah right... an Englishman says to his mate "Did you watch the soccer last night?" or "[Team X] are playing a high standard of soccer this season" .... I can just hear it now.

Its proper name in THIS country is soccer my friend, note the national team ...SOCCERoos. I dont care what a few Sydney journalists call it, one of the best journalist/interviewers got it right.

And these are the 'proper names' for the other codes, I presume:
Ruggers
Aerial ping-pong
League

Contender for most stupid post of all time......... so soccer should be called wog ball or pommy ball ....... hang on we can call aussie rules GAYFL, you forgot that one, i see signs on the side of the road saying join heathridge SOCCER club or "kids join the jacks SOCCER club" , i have never seen a sign saying join Bayswater aerial ping pong club, the official title for womens soccer in this country is the "Australian Womens Soccer Association"

There is so much wrong with your post that i really should not have bothered ......... getting ready for moronic reply.

Interesting the push from a minority to have this 'football' name all of a sudden. I grew up with it called soccer, and if theres a nice mix between the two then whats the problem. You'll never get the day where we have ppl referring to soccer as football, in the mainstream atleast. Other minorities that like to push their agendas should keep to themselves really.

I believe the governing body of the sport in this nation is the FOOTBALL Federation of Australia.

whats the bloody difference? Honestly I call Aussies Rules and soccer "football". If I say,

"I was watching the football yesterday and Henry scored a cracking goal"

Nobody is going to think its Aussie Rules.

What happens if we see a great goal by Schneider though?

Am I watching the Swans beat St Kilda in an AFL Preliminary Final?

Or am I watching Bayer Leverkusen?

JF

You'd be watching the AFL Preliminary Final because the Bundesliga isn't broadcast here.

Thanks. You've simply proven my point.

Association Football is the only sport whose 'derogatory name' was forced upon it as an 'official name'.

As I've pointed out before, what the majority (i.e. > 50%) of people call something at home and what that thing is officially called are often two completely different things.

Anyway, the 'majority' used to think the earth was flat. They also called Uluru 'Ayers Rock'. Sometimes somebody has to initiate a change for the better.

How you lump the term soccer in with wogball, aeriel ping pong, cross country wresting etc etc etc is beyond me, if you managed to read this thread (which i doubt) i posted that Micheal Parkinson the famous British interviewer used the term soccer in a interview recently in Sydney......many times , he seems quite a soccer fan so is he to using the term soccer in a derogatory way, i probably could find similar type scenarios ad nauseam.

Many countries use the term soccer if a previous code of football was estaablished before soccer.....USA, Canada, NZ, AUS, IRE, SA...... probably a few others....... and a couple of sad arse journalists in Sydney who think they represent main stream OZ.

There's your explanation.
Why was he using 'soccer'?
Because he was in AUSTRALIA. He knows thats the tradition here, and he's well educated, so he was obviously trying to be 'locally accurate'.

You'll find most Germans are the same. They make a big effort to be respectful of local language and culture, and therefore usually call it soccer when in this part of the world.

But they don't call it that at home.

They're just being polite...

And so should we all .
WE shouldn't be disrespectful and force people to change the established norms for the sake of the newcomer .Almost all of this debate is about which code deserves which title and it sounds very complicated but it isn't .
In private you can use any colloquism you feel neccessary to get your point across , but in mixed company there is a need to be a bit more formal to avoid confusion .
The fact is All the codes are football . so one has to differentiate (again in mixed company) as to which football you are referring .That is the polite way . i.e. not to force some code to se a different name .
The game indigenous to Australia , has always been known as football and now Australian Football .Luckily the rugger game is content to call itself after the place it was codified being Rugby .Rather silly . a split forced codes to be named after their format , that being Rugby Football Union and Rugby League Football .And following that (almost convention) The game codified at cambridge became known as Association Football .Note Australian Football is played in leagues and associations so that silly convention is out . Note also that in Australian there are organisations that play American football and Gaelic Football .Not forgetting International Rules .

So it is obvious , that when we are in mixed company , to avoid confusion , instead of every other football code forced to find a new name , it would be easier for what we know as soccer to change it's name from soccer to something else . I refer to soccer as much as I can as "A League"

Here are some suggestions instead of soccer .
English Rules Football or Cambridge Rules Football.
One only has to add the adjective when paths cross .

Association Football - that is the name of the sport.

On this board however it is "Football" & only "Football". If I could I'd have the "S" word added to the swear filter.
