My brother-in-law and I had dinner before the 2013 preliminary final at a restaurant in Chinatown then walked to the MCG via Treasury Gardens. My brother-in-law placed a bet backing the Cats to win the preliminary final.

Last Friday night, we had dinner at the same restaurant and walked the exact same route to the MCG. I placed a bet backing the Cats to win the qualifying final.

I'm personally convinced that Hawthorn's victory over Geelong in the qualifying final was all down to the actions my brother-in-law and I took on Friday night and nothing to do with the players.
Start putting money on cats for next few premierships

2012 Prelim was twilight.
2012 my missus got the new iPhone the day before the prelim
2014 prelim is twilight
2014 my missus is getting new iPhone before prelim

I got the new iPhone in 2012 too. Ordered the new iPhone this year - damn thing isn't being looked at until AFTER the GF.

I do all sorts of crazy things. If I am out and can't watch the game I check in on the AFL app. I will check the scores from different screens like the score tab or stats tab or commentary. If I check it from the commentary tab and we boot a goal i will only check it from that tab until the run is broken. I will also hold position during a game if we are on a roll until it is broken.

My girlfriend / wife has a terrible record of Hawks wins when she attends matches in Victoria. Last year she came to the Richmond match (as we were well entrenched up the top of the ladder). This year she has only been to the GWS game...

Surely she'd be the only Hawks fan whose seen us lose more than win in Melbourne from 2010-2014

Interstate she's fine

She won't be at the Prelim

I have yet to see a hawks win in Melbourne - on average come across a couple a times a season - one trip, the 2012 gf cost me about 8k all up
The other half and I right up until this weekend were coming for the prelim until one of our kids said - "are you serious, don't you want to see them play in a gf". In all seriousness the fact we had never seen them win hadn't registered until that moment - suffice to say, we aren't coming.

You can thank me later

The wife turned the TV off in the last quarter of the qualifying final...

She usually turns the TV off if we've started badly - works well

I take my mum to most hawks games, we train from the country and arrive in the city about 90 minutes before the match and have dinner/lunch. We never have plans with what we eat we just go with whatever we feel like whilst walking through the city.
I noticed a pattern where when we had Nando's from Australia on Collins we always won the match. I'd been to about 8 of those games in a row we lost to Geelong including the 2011 final with my mum and not once had we eaten Nando's. For the 2013 prelim we decided to eat Nando's before the match and BOOM! we beat Geelong! So the following week for the grand final Mum unfortunately didn't manage to get a ticket so I went by myself and ate Nando's for lunch before the game and BOOM! we beat Freo and won the flag. Every subsequent game we have gone to and won we'd eaten our superstitious Nando's at Australia on Collins. In round 16 before the North game we had dinner along southbank before the match.... after losing we vowed to always eat Nando's before the game.

Guess what we'll be having before this years prelim.

Mate, Australia on Collins (and its food court) is shut for renovations. For a year or so

Was intending to get tickets to go to the game last Friday night but as it fell on my birthday the "ministry of war & finance" had organised a surprise birthday dinner at my favourite sushi restaurant in Brighton, which wasn't a surprise anymore when I told her I was going to the footy.

Normally I'd kick up a stink but remembered the last time my birthday fell on a Friday we were playing a final. It was in 2008 against the doggies and she took me out to dinner that time and we won, so this time I thought id just go with the flow and lo' and behold the hawks won coz my wife took me out to dinner.

You're welcome Hawthorn BF board.
I'm not surprised she is called The Ministry of War if she is booking dinners without consulting footy fixtures:)

I never record a big game (games vs the likes of gws don't count) when watching them live on the telly. Every time I do this we lose. Since finding out about my power we haven't lost a big game. Rest assured folks I will only record the replay of the prelim this week.

Superstitions? I got a heap....

In the week leading up to a game I avoid wearing opposition colours.
The day before the game I wear my old, wornout, faded team socks.
On game day I wear my gameday socks, and while watching I wear one of my hawks t-shirts under my long sleeved #23 jumper, and over that I wear my old sleeveless jumper from VFL days, with the Rats signature still visible on the back.

While watching the Geelong/Hawthorn final last friday, I was lounging on the couch after dinner. The second half had just begun and I was leaning on the left arm-rest of the couch.

Hale booted a goal. Cue the customary fist-pump and cheer from me, and the customary rolling-her-eyes-at-her-husband's-fist-pump from my wife.

I got a bit uncomfortable with the way I was sitting and shifted my weight over to the right.

Selwood kicks a goal.

I immediately return to my previous position, comfort be damned.

It's amazing that the rational mind can say that how I am sitting has no bearing on what happens in the game (unless some extreme form of the butterfly effect is going on), and yet I still return to the previous position.

What are some of the little superstitions that you carry out before, during or after a game?

Maybe you have the ability to alter reality with your observational behaviour.

If I were you, I wouldn't attend this week's game - just in case...

Haha stuck in Perth, sorry to say. I'll be monitoring my observational behaviour from here :D

This is not a superstition, but does any one else drink really quickly when watching the game? When watching from the couch with the beers, I will not drink ever as quickly as when we are playing.

Unfortunately this has consequences. Just ask the GF about post 08, 2013 GF.

I tend to not drink during games. Alcohol affects my metabolism by accelerating it, so I don't need the extra excitement and the consequential struggle to sleep.
