Three and a Half Byes

Put it this way, if you were Kevin Sheedy (god forbid) next week. Would you see it as a sign of disrespect if the Hawks fronted up without Hodge, Gibson, Mitchell, Sewell, Franklin and Roughead?? I would! I would be thinking these blokes reckon they can knock us off with their B Side, which would give me a little extra ammunition.

Actually, this is EXACTLY what Sheedy did against Essendon. I think it was someone on MMM who said they were able to listen to Sheedy's pre-match speech and he pointed out how Essendon disrespected them by dropping a number of players. Then he said this Essendon team isn't the same team that has been beating everyone else in the comp all year. He fired his guys up and they ravaged the Injectors for over half a game before the Bummers found a little pep in the second half.

I wouldn't be taking Gold Coast too lightly. With our best team we should be easily able to beat these teams but if we make a lot of changes we could be vulnerable, especially if we were to take a 'we will win this easily' attitude into the game. There are still 18 opposition players out there and every match has to be won. Should be a lot easier than the previous seven weeks but four byes is not a remotely accurate assessment.

Every one goes harder in the finals. Ergo players do not go 100% all the time. Jason Dunstall spoke about intensity and how it was impossible to maintain, instead it is managed.

Bumblers knew they could stuff around and still flog GWS and they did. I reckon Sheedy had nothing to do with the score. Bumblers were going through the motions, when Thompson fired up his team they lifted. Bumblers did not respect GWS as GWS have done nothing that warrants respect.

Only rest those who genuinely need it. For example Gibson after that Goodes hit.

Otherwise, the Hawks should go for the kill.

Percentage might play a big part in final ladder positions at seasons end so its best the Hawks do everything to give themselves that advantage.

As I'm sure other teams will do the same.

I think that the Hawks will use the GWS and Melbourne game in particular to build their percentage. They will not take anything easy. Having said that, neither game is going to have the same physicality of a Geelong or Sydney game, the bodies are just not seasoned yet. I expect full intensity from the Hawks, but something of a bruise free intensity, ie. run all over them.

I agree that the GC cannot be taken for granted, they are coming along ok.

very cocky thread....

The wheel will turn and maybe we wont go as low as Melbourne but we will go down. We are a powerhouse NOW and I am loving it. Nothing wrong with being cocky and arrogant if you can back it up.

Personally I have a problem with this faux humility. I know it is a PC thing but to elevate your opponent way beyond their capacity is demeaning to them and hypocritical.

There's no "faux humility" in not referring to these next 3 games as "byes". To call them byes is to suggest that we do not even have to turn up with a team to beat them. You severely under rate their capacity by suggesting this.

Just look to round 23 of 2011 to see how close it gets just by taking out a dozen of our best players and bringing in our late picks and rookies. GWS and Gold Coast have A LOT of young talent, and it's only their inconsistency to show it across a whole game that stops them from getting close against a talented and experienced team like ours.

It's not a PC thing. It's just respecting your opponent, if they are on top of the ladder or at the bottom. To call them byes is just disrespectful. Nothing to do with PC. I think you're a bit confused.

How can you respect Melbourne or GWS for their performances this season? To have respect you have to earn it and getting flogged, sometimes by 100+, against average sides doesn't warrant earning respect.

Of course they will rest a few players with general soreness and rather than being cocky it is a good and legitimate tactic in what is a tough season. In the future it may well be an important strategy to rotate players especially the mids and give younger players more game time at the higher level.

Have people forgetton we conceded the last 4 goals of the GF and lost by 10 points ? or that we were flat for the biggest two games of the year and played our best footy 2/3rds into the season.

Rest everyone whos played 6 or 7 at least once over the next 3 games, and rest them again later in the year. If it gives us .0005% more run with 1 minutes to go in the GF it will be worth it.

Absolutely. If a bee's willy of a % is the difference between a home final or travelling to sydney/adelaide (e.g.), then it's crucial to beat up on the sides that are down at the moment. Everyone else does.

Amen to this!!!

GWS and Melb are rubbish!! GC not so bad.

We will smash the living daylights out of GWS and Melb!!

I've never seen 3 & a half Byes happen in CRICKET!.....Is that even possible?......Did half the leather casing fall off the ball on its way to the fence?
They, being the unknown with the power, changed it. Had I named the thread at half time of last night's game it would have been five byes. Blues look shot.

Yeah I'm not surprised....My thread was somewhat facetious based on that hunch! It seems I'm on a permanent Yellow Card....Might as well just call me Jaundice hey!!!... Or Tetanus.....LOL...

Yep, the Blues have been our "Bitch#s" for a while now! Though we dont need any motivation in Getting up for them, nor do we ever take them lightly...With Ratten's inside knowledge of them also being an advantage.

That said though, Think a few of their Blokes will have something to prove to Ratten when next we meet em, so in that respect, its a danger game for us!..Think we might be going for 10 in a row against them, which would be a club record...Not certain of that one though! But if right, how sweet would that be...

Gold Coast will be far from a push over so i cant understand the arrogance tbh, If we take them lightly they are capable of knocking us off i rekon, we should maintain the rage as much as possible whilst resting 1-2 players per week no more than that.
