Three things I learned- 2013

In the spirit of Sunday Gameday, here are my three things learnt from the 2013 season.

1- Rocky is a midfielder. He is a big bodied, strong mid in the style of one M Voss, so he can rest forward and score goals, but Brisbane need him in the engine room as much as possible.

2- some players take a little longer to develop but are worth persisting with. Lester, Harwood, (maybe Lisle) these are players that have been left to develop at their own pace, and that is starting to pay dividends.

3- You can never have enough quality ball users. We will still be spending 2014 working to build our next forward line and that will need as much quality supply as we can get. In Mayes we have unearthed another quality kick, Rich, and Hanley we already know about but more is better and its a key reason we really want to keep Docherty and Polec.

1. There's something special with our group. You don't see many young teams produce epic results in the last two years like ours has, where they've dug extremely deep against all odds to triumph. We've got the belief and our young brigade are showing what they can do on a more consistent basis.

2. There is still a place for our older players. McGrath and Raines were two of our best today and Adcock, Moloney, Staker, Brown, Black and our older KPDs all deserve a spot in the team next year.

3. I'm now moving into the 'give Lisle an extended run in 2014' camp, on the proviso that he is full of rage when the game starts. He must be the softest full forward in the league and is awful in the ruck, but he can take marks and kick goals in the forward 50. There is also no coincidence that the best two games he's played for us have been when Brown has been out. I'd move Brown to CHF and let Lisle be the no. 1 target. Currently they both like playing deep and don't gel at all.

2. Our team was heading in the right direction under Voss
3. I still want our premiership guernsey back

2. Mayes is slick
3. Staker is in good nick

And Rich I don't think will ever be a complete footballer. The best players you just let them do their thing, but he will need to be managed to help him get in the game.

Oh, and

1. Marco can run
2. Hanley's a gun; and
3. Banfield's done.

1. Patfull is a gun and keeps getting better.
2. Patfull is gorgeous and looks like a god.
3. Patfull is the nicest bloke ever.

But seriously:

1. Patfull really stepped it up this year. I never thought he could finish with the most marks for the Lions, but he's just added a whole new dimension to his game
2. Travelling really sucks. It's simply exhausting, and that's just what it did to me. I hate to think of the toll it takes on the players. I'm a bit more forgiving of away games now, especially towards the end of the year. Working all week + big weekend of travel mucks you up.
3. Players play, coaches coach, administrators administrate. If this order is messed up, then things can go seriously wrong.

1. We are headed in the right direction (on the field) but just as we finished strongly last season we can't get too carried away with it. Still plenty of work ahead of us.

2. Discipline or lack thereof. Worst for Frees Against by a clear margin in season 2013 (460). Sure, there have been times when we feel we have been dudded at the most inopportune times denying us a chance of victory with the game still up for grabs but we still need to take responsibility for own actions. FWIW, Freo are 4th worst (423) but they have the class to overcome that.

Also, it's easier to win from in front than from behind. Getting into gear from the 1st bounce rather than later more often would help tremendously in staying in the match but in saying that:

1) The umpires do not see Lions players when we play and the AFL couldn't care less if we exist

2) Voss was not the man to take us forward. 40% winning rate plus stagnant ladder positions in his extension years after his initial debacle meant it was definitely time to move on

3) Whatever the competition is that the Lions' Reserves play in it ain't no VFL!
