At times like these I often wish I could call the doc and get the delorian to go back in time and fix a few of the mistakes we've made.

Noteable fixes would be signing Kevin Sheedy as head coach in 1981 with Mick Malthouse as assistant, resting Richo for that Sydney game, Browny for the Melbourne game and a few drafts.

I have attached the drafts since 1997 with who we could have picked to see if there was one year we could fix, which would it be, Personally I would love to show this page like Biff's Almanac to the recruiters back in 1999 and I think things may be a bit different to now:

Stop right there...do that and everything else would've fallen into place....oh and get guys like childhood Richmond supporter David Rhys-Jones from South Melbourne and other guns from shitty clubs instead of duds from Collingwood...:thumbsu:

..and show the board members the record books from the future to keep them in line...

Yeah those lists always reveal how many years of management a new coach inherits.

Sure he needs to take responsibility after at least his second year but every time Goodes has ripped us a new one it goes back to bad talent spotting back in the last decade. Even Wallace was still in Frawleys eras mismanagement all the way to the end.

Has any club had such bad coaches end on end.

Walls,Gieshen,Frawley and Wallace and the dud recruiters they had on thier side. Becks legacy remains big time. What did that bloke get paid to walk around as a talent spotter.

WOW, well done Big Vee. Amazing dedication to put that together..
Pav was the biggest blunder IMO..
It seems apart from the obvious few we have done quite well from the bottom of the draft and the Rookie draft..ie:- Newman & Foley.

Nice post!

As much as I try to tell myself, "Well, you could do this for any club," I still look at the 1999 draft and weep.

What it reinforces for me is that good recruitment can pluck top talent from anywhere. Take the 2001 draft: we only had picks 33 and 63 in the ND and still could have taken Sam Mitchell and Brian Lake, plus Sandilands in the rookie draft.

Ok - I'm going to put the opposite

1997 - Pick 2 - Ottens - right Pick. Travis Johnstone was No 1, Trent Croad No 3, Bolton 4. We got the best player from the top 4. Every club passed on Goodes at least twice (including the swans).
1998 - Pretty much a dud draft all around. Scotland was Collingwoods 4th pick - after Davis (F/S, only came good at Sydney), Oborne (5 games and Jacotine (16 games). Dragacevic was stuffed by injury.
1999. Yes, Fiora hurts. As does Poyas. But Chapman was Geelong's 5th pick - after Corey (Good), Spriggs (ha ha), Bray (0 games) and Foster (who?).
2000 - Picks 4-7 played a total of 114 games between them. ( No 8 was Motlop who didn't play well until he moved to his 2nd club). The picks immediately after Pettifer were McMahon and Sporn (most have been the draft 'soft' section).
2001 - Geelong had 6 picks in the top 41 - including Charlie Gardner and Henry Playfair. They've had their share of crap picks (In 2000 their first pick was 44 (hunt - ok) and then two further duds.).

I could go on. Every club has it's good and bad luck stories. Geelong has had some disastrous selections. I think our player development has been our major problem. Just because we drafted those players doesn't mean we would have made something of them.

Why limit it to the draft picks we had, let's make that trade that Freo wanted back in 2001.

D. Gaspar to Freo
Pick 1 to Richmond

Pick 1 - Chris Judd.
That wouldnt have worked we would have turned him into adud, i mean really what did we need a good kick for, we had that great exponent of the Kick in Darenn gaspar.

And we would have richmondised judd, he wouldnt have got twigs or the brownlow if he was at the tigers.

to be fair, some of the pciks you missed were roughies.

dean cox was a skinny, lazy kid from he country - no one could see he would turn in to what he has. same could be said about sandilands. the rookie drafts are very hit and miss.

national drafts though, you have to make them work, and the tige's haven't. overlooking pav would sting. him and richo up front would be nice.

i think the thing that has hurt the tige's alot has been trading/delisting players you shouldn't have. bit like a dockers trait. this year your kids seem abit better. especially like the look of nason. kid kills himself running.
