Today Tonight takes moral high ground

At least Chad Fletcher had the OPTION of deciding if he wanted his medical records made public.

The two players names in these medical reports obtained by Ch 7 in a somewhat dubious manner (for want of a better term) DID NOT HAVE THAT LUXURY.

I'm with Chewy on this one in regards to the sanctity of medical reports.

FFS, I assess applications for Life Insurance for a living, and am dealing with other people's medical records on a daily basis.

If I so much as THOUGHT about discussing that sort of privileged information with someone outside of work - and decided to mention names rather than be vague & general about it - I would be out on my arse so quickly I wouldn't know what hit me.

so from what your saying you think it would be ok to report he sighting of an afl player at a drug rehab clinic, so long as the actual medical records were not released? your issue is with fact that its actual medical records?

are not club doctors constantly asked about player injuries by the media? doesn't peter larkin often report on players medical conditions?

its ok to report on someones medical history so long as the the basis of your report is not medical records. Rumors from friends/family for example is fair game?

It seems to me that for the victorian media at least, when its interstate clubs and players its called drug abuse, and when is a high profile victorian club, its called a private medical issue.

yes fair point this. I tend to agree with you.

Not unlike earlier in the year when Hawthon vs St Kilda was derided as a flooding horrible spectacle when a similiar game b/w Adel vs Sydney was described as gripping and absorbing.

You are dead wrong. In fact I cannot believe that you even posted the above garbage.

For those that are stupid read on: the public broadcast of a person's medical records is illegal. Full stop. ILLEGAL. It is also a serious and unforgivable breach of both a persons civil liberties as well as being a breach of the doctor/patient relationship that LEGALLY demands that a patients records be kept confidential.

When I go to a doctor, I expect that my records are kept completely confidential. It is my civil right. Has the world gone completely mad? To suggest that there should be any reason for C7 to have purchased these records and turned them into a news story and a grab for ratings is unbelievable.

I'm not saying I agree with Channel 7 tactics but i think there are two issues here with only one of them getting air time. Just look at your post yes I know doctor/patient relationship is confidential (to a poster below though not as tight as u may seem or make out to be) and of course there is that issue there.

But the fact ur whole post mentions this side of the story when i was trying to gauge the two issues. FACT drugs are illegal yet this exactly what I am trying to demonstrate the whole issue has been pushed aside. If the 7 players weren't afl members but were teachers or were politicians it is my belief the attitude would be different.

They had some good points. If one club has 7 players found taking drugs, it means its a huge issue. Yet everyone blocks there ears and starts taking shots at channel 7. I have heard hardly anything about the AFL actaully doing something about the problem besides there stupid little '3' strikes your still not out policy.

Yes there seems to be ALOT of people and organisations acting like hypocrites.

Yes... channel 7 have overstepped the mark...but did they name the players ?

Yes...The AFL have been caught with their pants down and tripping over their own spin on the drug issue.

Yes...the AFL loath channel seven and its personal between the 2 parties , so they are deflecting alot of the flak away from themselves by attacking channel seven.

Yes...channel 9 and other media in competition with 7 have all jumped on the moral bandwagon which is nothing short of laughable.

Yes...the players are outraged ( and upto a point fair enough), but those that are concerned for their fellow players welfare should be more concerned at the numbers actually delving into drugs and being allowed to get away with it so often.

As I said...alot of hypocricy is being shown here and it is all deflecting attention from the REAL problem !!!!!

I also wonder if there would be all this deflecting if this was about the Eagles ??

You are a cynic.

Hutchy has said he wouldn't have run the story and given his upstanding virtue you have to accept this word at face value.

Similairly Collingwood FC has boycotted ch7 over the story and i have every confidence they would have done same if ch9 had run it.

Mate most West Coast supporters are seething at the hypocrisy shown both by the AFL and the ALFPA.

If there are currently two players attending a rehab centre, why are they allowed to continue to play? The AFL insisted on having the final say on when Cousins could come back to play (even though it was the club who suspended him). I cant see how Cousins is suspended, yet two other players can continue to play while attending a rehab centre!!!:eek:

Where was the players association when Braun had his name aired on national TV as a drug cheat, by Channel 7 no less. He was named on the psychic abilities of another player with no evidence what so ever, let alone documented medical records.

Where was the players association when Chad Fletcher had his name bandied around based on rumour? Then the media cried out to view his private medical records to prove he was innocent of said rumours like they had a right to know what he did on his holiday FFS.

Everyone talks about the right to privacy with medical records, fair enough. Did anyone care that the tapes that Daniel Kerr was heard talking on were supposed to be sealed? They were recorded after getting special warrants, they are never supposed to be heard in a public forum. I gather the fact that someone in the police force leaked them is the reason that their public airing has never been investigated? Not much difference between this and the medical records where I'm standing, but its West Coast so its OK.

Hypocrisy indeed.

tongue firmly in cheek i hope

sorry, I don't understand.

Hang on......are you suggesting certain media types may be biased, hypocritical and looking to gain some mileage at ch7's expense?

I can't accept this.

I am sure The Footy Show tomorrow will cut ch7 slack and admit they too have crossed the line on ocassion and realise that its time for the media to work on a code of ethics together - as one.........going forward.

Oh dear... now getting Today Tonight to attack the AFL

Could Channel 7 get anymore low/ tabloid/ trashy?

I really do hope the players boycott the Brownlow.

Nothing against you, just that you were the most handy quote available as an example of the lemmings that post on this board.

As for said lemmings, I assume you will ban Ch7, the Brownlow, the finals and so on and so on yourselves. Yep, sure Ted Ed Fred.

Personally I found the story from last Friday interesting and would like to know more. Lots more.

I saw TT and the biggest goose on the story was the Birdman (whose club I believe is sponsored by Ch9).

One thing which I wondered about - they reported that Chris Grant wasn't abiding by the ban and was happy to talk to channel 7, followed with the tightestly cut clip I have ever seen of him saying '-eah I wouldn't have a problem with tha-'

Anyone know what he *actually* said?[/quote]

"NEXT QUESTION"!!!!

After agreeing to allow a question from the ch7 reporter, said reporter had the nerve to ask about the current drug issue and then followed this up with another q on the same subject!!! Needless to say her involvment in the press conference ended there!!!

Agreed.

Like many WCE supporters, although I do not agree with C7's actions, I do agree with the result! :thumbsu: Now we can see the ridiculous bias that people in the media and on the board have been harbouring all year. Good to finally have a few allies as well!

I was lucky enough to catch the start of the 'EXCLUSIVE!', whilst flicking through the channels. I liked the ending the best.

"The woman who sold the documents and a man, have been charged with the rarely used law of selling something that dosen't belong to them"

How do people watch this rubbish night after night?
Normally they just call them "un-Australian" then have a shot of someone hiding from the cameras who owes some poor or elderly person money.

Today Tonight, moral and high ground are all mutally exclusive terms and cannot be used in the same paragraph let alone the same sentence.

Today Tonight is a tabloid wank fest and has been for twenty years.
It the breeding ground for species of TV talking heads who's only required skill is to be able to rhyme or make a pun in a headline.
It specialises in sensationalising such topics as how many germs are on an Auto teller as opposed to a toilet seat. (areas they are known to frequent.)

If you beleive for one millsecond that any part of their story was aired in the interest of anything other than sensationalism, muck-raking or ratings then your mind left your cranium some time ago.

Current Affair = Today Tonight = gutter journalism = mediocrity = the putrid meniscus which grows on the scum that comes of a real journalists shit when you boil it.

I'm on Channel 7's side in this one. Anybody who thinks the medical profession can provide a therapy for drug use needs to be outed as a person prone to misbegotten ideas.

On another tack, has it been established what drugs were allegedly involved? It would be no surprise if all of this garbage came about as a result of residual THC in the system of a couple of players after some social scoobs.

A little bit more serious than that I'm affraid. I believe the drugs ice, cocaine and ecstacy were mentioned.

Today Tonight only exists, as cannon fodder for The Chasers!!

I have enjoyed the way that ACA and TT went from falling over themselves in praise of the Chaser to going crook about them harassing truck drivers and clergymen. Just like one week they go on about the arse falling out of the housing market and the next about how some hick has bought eleventy hundred houses and is, like, rich and stuff.
