Can't see two firsts happening but I can see it if the Eagles are paying for part of TB's salary giving us more flexibility going forward. Eagles essentially buying a pick upgrade.

Would imagine it would involve the second coming back. Maybe even a swap of thirds and fourths.

Excuse my ignorance, but if Hawthorn have offered more money than the Eagles, then how can we expect them to pay any of his salary and why would we want them too. It doesn’t make sense to me
A $1m contract looks great on paper. The fact that it might only cost you $500k is even better. Think of the Grundy scenario.

This.
We wouldn't.

What team building into contending wouldn't want another team paying some of its salary cap for the next three years?

Hawks may have cap space now. But what about in the future and the ability attracting more big trades as they get closer to seriously contending?

What amount over his current contract Hawks are paying doesn't matter. It is irrelevant.

AFL rule is the club holding the existing contract can contribute to paying a portion over the remaining term of the existing deal. Nothing to do with the new deal.

100%.

Teams will pay up a bit extra for flexibility. If it's pick 13 going one way and pick 21 coming back (speculating) it's the equivalent of roughly a pick in the 40s in terms of value.

If the Eagles are willing to take on 400k a year that might be enough to keep a few extra guys on the fringes happy to build a deep list.

400k number over 3 years does make some sense, pulled that number out the air myself and the math works.

400k over 3 from WC + 600k over 4 (trigger for 5) would equal 900k over 4 or 850k over 5.

Unsure if this avenue is really needed from a hawks perspective but can generally see the benefits. Ironically would have been perfect for a club like WB if he chose them.

hawthorn might not need any cap relief but for a side who's just come from the bottom end their wage bill is going to head upwards fairly quickly over the coming years. Next year doesnt look too bad other than whatever rise Dear gets.

for 2026 Reeves, Watson, Newcombe, Moore, Lewis all coming out. Wage bill starts climbing and the club will no doubt prefer to sign those guys next year if they can. Having that extra bit of cap space can do wonders for getting some guys on to longer deals with some frontloading.

and thats before even considering any trade targets/free agency etc next year

Pick buying is coming in next year. If we ever need relief we can always use it years later. Rather than spend a pick now in the slim chance we might need extra cap space in 2-3 years time.

The caps also increasing.

It sounds like Barrass and F2 for 13 and F1 is the trade if the rumours are to be believed. Could very easily end up being Barrass and pick 20 for pick 13 and pick 16. We'll likely finish bottom 4 again and Hawks should make a semi again at the very least.

This.

It's basically pick 13 and a minor pick swap next year unless things go completely balls up for the Hawks next year

I don't get why so many Hawks supporters were getting their knickers in a knot over it tbh. As a WC supporter I'd probably prefer 13 and their F2 with nothing going back

If it's 2 x firsts, the 2nd coming back from you will be this year's, not your F2.

It won't be this year's unless we acquire additional picks. And even then I think that is unlikely. The Hawks' best bet for gaining an extra pick this year is to get Richmond involved in the trade.

Murmurs are Hawks want Eagles to contribute a fair bit to Barass salary which is why we are pushing real hard for the 2 1st rounders

No idea why Hawks would care about that if they had money for Perryman but missed out but seems they do care ? Maybe they got interest in LDU and Cam Rayner next free agency period or something so are preparing for that

They have a bunch of players who are about to go onto big money in the next few years.
Basically all of their young stars, they need salary cap space to keep them all onboard.

That doesn't make sense to me. Not only should they not yet need cap room but trading out a future 1st basically immediately rules you out of any decent names next year unless you lose a good player - see Pies and Port. I don't see any reason behind asking for a big cap contribution if it means losing a future 1st.

Makes zero sense at all. I truly think they have a monster offer for Cam Rayner that they know Brisbame cant match and are working towards that
