That’s what I mean. He’ll get offered much better $$$ and probably longer elsewhere. Why not wait until the offers come which would improve his bargaining position with Carlton?
What I'm saying is that those offers came a long time ago.
As I said, that’s the business way of looking at it but there has to be a price on loyalty when you’ve got a strong list. Surprised you didn’t ask about McGovern snr, if he went over to play the last couple of years of his career with his brother you’d probably be flag favourites.
He would fit beautifully. Cap space is the concern.

They did but until it’s on paper in front of him it doesn’t carry the same weight in negotiations plus blues would HAVE to match the contract terms to keep him or lose him for pick 15ish which will blow out to 20s.

I guess that’s the thing with Gov, we could have paid his $1m salary this year allowing you to pay him say 700k in 2026 for a one year extension only and have him for both years.

Issue would have been the draft cost for you. Gov plus $1m salary dare I say it we’d still would have had pick 3.

Who knows
But St Kilda has TDK as #1 on their list and are coming hard for him with a very big offer
who did he support as a kid
Blues from memory, or perhaps thats his brother Sam 🤔

Either way the Saints won't be getting TDK out of Carlton for free, and I can't see SOS ponying up the picks that would be needed to get a trade done

I can’t see it getting to that stage tbh. Provided the team doesn’t completely implode, I expect him to sign for unders before the bye.

"De Koning would ultimately be handed the No.12 guernsey at his new club, which was his old club: he supported Carlton as a kid before his childhood hero Nick Riewoldt – whose number he would wear at Ikon Park - swung him to the team from Moorabbin."

History repeating?

Are you expecting Max King to request a trade?

3 first rounders and he's yours SOS
I guess this is the issue I was pointing out to bradfisher14 . Say Saints offer $1.4m a year in the free agency period.

What do Carlton do so extract more than the single FA compo pick (15ish), match?

If Saints call their bluff and walk away your cap is back in John Elliott territory.

Not really, the offer can be spaced out over a length of time. If the Saints offered 10 mil over 7-8 years or something ridiculous we can just put 4 mil of that in the last year when we have nobody contracted and match the bid.

Geelong and GWS went through similar with Jeremy Cameron from memory.

What happens when that year comes to pass would be a different matter but letting TDK walk for what could be a pick in the late teens would be some of the worst list management ever.

I agree with your last paragraph but there has to be a point where the answer is no we’re not going to/can’t match. Not sure the AFL even sign off on matching a contract like that when the cap is already (allegedly) bulging.

A few posters have been saying a deal has been agreed in principle. Does anyone know where this information is actually coming from?

Yeah unfortunately that loophole where a contract gets so big you can't match doesn't actually exist. The only thing you can do is a two year eye watering contract if you have the space

Silly stories from Tom Morris about our cap space bulging are bollocks. A basic analysis of our list would show we wouldn't be in any trouble at the moment and wouldn't have any issues matching a hit even if it was just for the sake of forcing a trade.

As to where the info a deal is all but agreed on, just an ITK posters on the Blues board. Could be total bollocks for all we know.

Saints probably would have the space to do that but can’t see De Koning taking that idea well if the Saints put it to him (not that I think they would). Would require a SOS level of blow up between player and club. Going to be a fascinating watch.

TDK will be 26.5 years old when his contract is finished so you would think a 6/7 year deal would be on the cards
Ruckman are probably the last position you would be wanting to commit $1.2 million plus on and specially for a leaping Ruck thats always landing heavily on his legs.

Its a big risk for either club
