I dunno about that, but he does tend to insert a bit of corporate w*nk speak into his commentary, which I find as annoying. He uses the word 'transition' a lot. It's a basketball term, it makes sense describing movement from defense to attack, but it is still a w*nky word.

I may have even heard the word 'synergy' one Friday night.

Steven Silvagni? When was the last time he commentated.

Blight's terrific and so is Mark Maclure.

Walls and Lloyd are woeful. Boringly negative, state the obvious & no insight.

Maclure is good. Lloyd is really good, maybe I've only heard him on SEN as opposed to TV. He seems to tell it like it is on SEN and to me has a fair bit of cred. As opposed to Brereton who is on at the same time on SEN but tends to waffle on.

Well, not worst ever. He is a heap better as a panelist, he actually was great last year on one week at a time which is pretty much why 7 poached him I'd think. He might need a bit more experience as an observer of the game rather than a player, I guess not everyone can make the transition very easily.

I love the man but his commentary work has been stock standard to date.

Picture this ; you're sitting in between the legendary Lethal and Dennis Commetti doing special commentary. You're there replacing another legend in Bruce McAvaney.

Not only did Harley hold his own, but after a while I particularly enjoyed the camaradie between the three of them. Commetti wasn't showing off to Brucey, and Lethal was laughing and making jokes as well. Brilliant.

For a just retired footballer to be able to do that, speaks volumes of Harley's suitability as a commentator. It not just about the comments, its being able to slot into a team, whoever else is there. Well done Tom. :thumbsu:

How do these guys not only get commentary jobs but are able to keep them year after year , they are all too matey with the players , need someone with a bit of guts and who is prepared to be critical of them....none come to mind .

Too many egos get in the way ...let the game be the story .

He's a little irritating at times (constantly trying to tell us how good a spectacle Saints v Bulldogs was), but still better than most others. Comfortably ahead of Lloyd, and the less said about Walls and Blight the better.

I think Harley's pretty good and better than most commentators. Lloyd's commentary is more insightful like Buckley's was, but Lloyd has a bit of a monotone voice which is why some people on here don't like him. His inflections and emotions don't change much which can make people tune out and think he's a bad commentator.

Harley's very easy to listen to and I think he's the type of guy who'll constantly work on getting better. He's got a long future in the media provided he doesn't get the itch to coach.

I loved how Harley shut down Schwartz in the last quarter of the Collingwood vs Carlton game yesterday.

Schwartz in his I CAN'T BELIEVE IT tone: "Beams is a great second fiddle at Collingwood and he didn't play the first 2 rounds. A lot of Collingwood supporters couldn't understand why he didn't play the first 2 rounds!"
Harley: "Discipline".
Schwartz: "Discipline was it?"
Harley: "Discipline reasons. He was out late".
Schwartz: "Oh".

Actually, I think he's quite good. He has said quite a few things that give some special insight into how the players think on the field, which is what you want from a special commentator. He's very natural in front of the camera/mic which is a big plus.

He's only been doing it a short while - gotta give him a chance to work things out!

My favourite is James Hird, he's excellent in On The Couch - hope he does more commentary type stuff. He's not only got one of the best footy brains going around, he also knows how to communicate it effectively.

I'm sort of ashamed to admit it, but I actually didn't mind David Schwarz today

I was actually thinking the same thing, he actually is quite witty and insightful. maybe its taken him a while to get used to the position and get some confidence, but im enjoying him alot more these days

Well, Beams was suspended/left out of one NAB Challenge match but it's been stated by Malthouse that Beams was simply unlucky that he went out of the side when he did, and the reason he didn't play the first match was due to form. So they're both wrong.

TBH he is actually getting better imo, on SEN he is quite good, keeps things simple and has a crack at players if it is warranted. His cringe-worthy stating the obvious stuff when he is doing special comments for channel 7 have also diminished a fair bit. Is actually adding a bit of insight to the game he is watching. Maybe the fact that he is more experienced now has got something to do with it.

Robert Walls has to be the worst i've ever heard. No insight whatsoever, states the bleeding obvious and is so bias towards Carlton it makes me want to cry.

I know he's not the most exciting special comments man going around, but Harley just has this 'Genuine Nice Guy' feel about him, so i've always had a soft spot for him, be it as a player or commentator.
