Just a idea that came to my head when thinking about Voss's retirement. I wonder he would be in the top ten and who would make a list. Make your own list and let's comment.

No negative posts, I know it's a BF guideline rule but please no lol.

There is a difference between being a great player and a great captain
Yep. Nathan Buckley was/is a great player but has never been a great captain. Wayne Carey was both. A champion captain and a champion player despite what happened at the end of his career.

Geez he was only All Australian captain 10 times. I wonder why... :rolleyes:

Here are some of the greats:

- Carey - Epitome of all things a Captain should be, from 21;
- Kernahan - 1 year into his career and Captain, great leader;
- Voss - Took the side by the scruff of the neck and lead with brilliance and physical prescence;
- Mathews - Like Voss and Carey, brilliant and intimidating;
- Whitten - The Heart and Soul of the club;
- Paul Kelly - Don't rank his footy ability as high as some, but again was the heart of the club;
- Hird - Inspiration in all things, best media type Captain;

Don't know much of the pre 70's era so won't mention too much.

I think a Great Captain mixes Brilliance with Intimidation and the ability to drag his club into greatness as well as setting the ultimate example..

Personally, I don't rank Buckley as high although he is one of the best in preperation and consistency but not as high for on field prescence and ability to carry the club to greatness.
