Who is the toughest/dirtiest players you've either played with/against or seen in vic country/metro football. Always a great topic to debate -I'll get the ball rolling- Steve Gallop who played in the Riddell league. Not courageous-although a good player-extremely dirty. Any stories to go with your nominees would be appreciated.

Derek Filo in the Bendigo league never shirks a contest- Brutal strength sees that he gets his own way on the field most of the time. Mark Power for size is up there for his ability to throw himself into contests and brawls. Sent off in a grandfinal a few years ago and gave a player a touch up on his way off the field because he was giving him a mouthful. I'm sure most onballers have had run ins with Mark Power at some point in time.

I watched a grand final years and years ago and i think it was Colbo playing.

They had a guy on the fwd line called Barry Bird, by qtr time he had kicked 4 goals and knocked out about three players, mad as a snake but did it get the crowd going. Was any one at that game.?

A bloke by the name of Peter "Stormy" Tempest that played for Seymour and Avenel in the mid to late 80's was pound 4 pound the toughest player i have seen play.

Mate, is Filo playing again next yr.??

I seen him playing early this year when i was over at Maryboough one day and could not beleive he was still playing.

The last time i seen him play was in castlemaines flag side.

He would have to be pushing 40 yea. ?

Class act, great kick of the footy.

Does any one know if Jorgensen is still going around.?

Just remember courage and toughness is not belting a bloke in the head, it is getting the hard footy and putting your body on the line.

Although i will name a couple of dirty players;
Mark Neeld - weak dog who i saw hit a 17 year old kid in teh back of teh head and thought he was the toughest player alive.

Mark Hildebrandt - loved to take on the kids but whenever a bigger older bloke got involved pooed his pants.

Aldo Pettina - same again picks on kids, can fight, but prefers the weaker targets.

Sorry i am restricted to the Geelong area only.

the man your referring to was Bruce Bird. Kicked six against Heathcote in the 91 granny. the story goes that before the game whilst the teams were lined up for the national anthem, Birdy started down the heathcote boys telling them he was going to kill them and their mothers! Steve Wilson was also in that Colbo side as was quite mad as well but could play footy. I think he ended up having a spell in the big house at some stage!

Chris Bolton was pretty tough, the fairest player you'd see, but probably the most toughtest interms of courage and body on the line stuff.

he is the only cricketer i've ever played against who performed the famous 'mankad' manouver whilst bowling.

Hayden Lamaro (aka the Tin Man from the Wizard of Oz) plays each week despite not having a heart, now that's tough!

Derek Filo is coaching/playing for Eaglehawk again this year. He has achieved a lot since his Castlemaine days. Nearly got drafted at age 27 by St Kilda when he was playing at Kyneton in the mid nineties. So going on that fact he's close to late thirties. Nearly won the Bendigo Granny last year off his own boot in the third quarter.

Jorgo officially retired last year from Lancefield in the Riddell District League. He had put on a bit off beef on in his latter years-but never lost that old Jorgo Magic. Castlemaine in the early 90's had one hell of a team going around-many of that team had a taste of the big league. Talking about tough players, Derek's brother Shaun was up there. Extremely mad (disturbing eyes ) had to play my first senior game against him aged 16- S%it myself. He grabbed me by the throat before the bounce and told me not to get a kick for the game. Unfortunately (not because i was warned off ) i obliged. Anyone know if he's still running around.

Gary Odgers the captain coach of east ballarat in the late 80's had the scariest eyes i have ever seen. in fact the whole east ballarat side in the late 80's was as dirty as hell.

They could play a bit too. Back to back in '88 and '89 in an era when North Ballarat was dominating the BFL.

Super bloke old Stormy.

Wasn't just a tough bastard on the footy field either!!

He is now letting out any weekday tension out on the golf course. Rather than smashing in faces, he tries to smash in golf balls.

Brucey Bird theres a name from the past. Always had the biceps out, hair nice and neat from memory

Not sure if this post fits the thread but anyway here go's. This bloke would have to take the cake for the craziest bloke in country footy but more for an off field incident. A guy by the name of Danny Sheers (spelling?) used to play for Corowa. He probably last played around '99'/'00'. I saw him do a ripping job of tagging Tim Hargreaves of Yarrawonga in '99'. Sucked Hargreaves right in and they both got sent off and reported for whacking each other. It then errupted on the boundary line. After seeing this game the next i heard of Sheers was when i read in the paper (late 2000 maybe???) that he had been charged with murder. He stabbed some bloke 27 times alledgedly over drugs!!! So this bloke would have to be the craziest.

Toughest player for me it would have to be Matty Amad(Northcote Park), captain of 4 straight flags from(99-02) when diamond valley was at its strongest, possibly even a captain of another flag in 97?
He would jump on the ball get his head jumped on and then do it again next contest, all round champion.

Re Bruce Bird:
He carried his reputation into the now defunct Northern & Echuca Footy League too.
Was coach of Gunbower. Tough & Mad!
