Not against getting Miles but if we do then Bird and Howlett must go. Can only have one of those guys max on the list for next season.

Why pay for someone when we have the exact same type of player already on our list (x 2 - Bird & Howlett)?

He probably would be an upgrade on both of them. It seems like he's fallen out of favour at the Tigers for some reason given he's only played 5 games so far this year. Bit odd considering he was one of the best mids in 2014-16. Certainly averaged a fair few clearances each of those years (ranged between 4.8 and 6.6 per game, as an indicator our best so far this year our best clearance winner has been Jobe at an average of 4.6 per game, followed by Heppell with 4.5 and Merrett with 4.3).

Looks like the Tigers have Caddy, Prestia, Lambert, etc. ahead of him, so there's a chance he may leave for more opportunity.

I'd have the likes of Hopper and Kennedy ahead of him given they're younger and could very well hit their straps next year in the midfield. Having said that given the choice I'd definitely do away with Howlett (Bird is contracted until the end of 2019 apparently), then get Miles (if he comes cheap enough, etc.). He's one of those that's not quite an A-grader but a bit more than just a role player when given the chance.

Bottom line I wouldn't be dismissing the idea of getting Miles out of hand.

Given Watson probably won't go around again I think you take Miles and play him. Bird/Howlett stay for depth, unless you think Langford/Laverde have both passed Howlett in which case he might go home west too.

Miles is much better, only 25 too, has upside to go.

I'd rather get a better long term solution than Miles. He feels too stop-gappish and has already fallen out of favour at 2 clubs. I know he's not that old but I'd rather we went out and attracted a top tier contested ball winner or at least a young gun.

He's not getting a game at Richmond for a reason. Richmond are a good side but not a great one - so its a pretty big negative indicator that he's not good enough to get games. We might get him and just find we have another Bird/Howlett and we spent money/list spot and potentially draft resources on him.

We are likely not going to be in any kind of premiership contention next year anyway (not unless there is a big name midfielder coming along with Miles) and a slew of improvement from our young players. Better to keep developing our own if we can't attract elite talent.

You don't trade for an Anthony Miles, and on the off chance you do it's token 5th rounder kind of stuff, or you get him thrown in to grease the wheels of a larger deal (see Craig Bird).

It'd be a bit of a nothing move, might as well aim a little higher, pay a little more and get a guy that's a bit younger and with a bit more scope, or go the other way and find someone outside the system that can impact immediately. Lukas Webb the former and Nick Holman the latter IMO.

I'd go over the character limit for if I started reeling off all the inside midfielders picked up for draft scraps that ended up becoming decent role players or much, much better.

Watching the Giants game and Hopper and Kennedy would be worth every penny to us. Both contested beasts Kennedy had 20 touches and 6 tackles and Hopper had 17 and 9 tackles in his first game back for a few months
What would Kennedy cost us?? He went around the 12-15 mark in his draft didn't he? Haven't seen much of him but from what you are saying he has shown he can play against men (TAC you only see their form against other kids). Do you give up your first and switch around some 3rd round picks in our favour...or do you do a typical Essendon and play hardball and only offer a 2nd rounder.

Kennedy is worth a pick between 10-15 but we could potentially get him for our 2nd but it would get drawn out I reckon. Hopper is worth a pick around 5-10 and im hoping the offer of our first is enough. If im Essendon id trade our first next year and our 2nd this year to get both over. 2018 is a quality draft but if we added these 2 kids along with the improvement of the rest of our young guys id expect nothing less than finals next year which would give us a later pick.

I think A fair bit relies on whether Kelly re-signs with the Giants. If he does, and they re-sign a few others (like Smith and himmelberg) then guys like Hopper and Kennedy will not fit in their cap and probably forced out.

In that case GWS might want to move them on to separate clubs to maximise return. But if we can convince both than I reckon our first this yer nd second next year would be better I reckon (if I understand correctly DPS next years top end is better?

Its better next year but we should have a better 1st round pick this year if we don't make finals. I still think we are getting the better deal but offering next years might be enough to entice them on getting both over to us.

Josh Dunkley?
Would be a bit behind the pecking order at the dogs with the likes of libba, Wallis, macrae, Bont, Jong, hunter etc.

Combined with a move for hopper (or drafting of an inside mid), would sort us out for the next decade.

Wigg still not getting game time at Adelaide and putting up good numbers at sanfl. Not an inside mid but a good hbf/wing option who can find the ball and use it.

Pretty sure Dunkley signed recently.

Last year we went after O'Meara and Koby Stevens, I cant see any reason why we still wouldnt be targeting midfielders in this years trade/draft period.

Quality Midfielders (not a prismall type) and a developing Key forward with kicking ability would be our needs.

Did we go after Koby Stevens or was that just talk?

Just talk, don't think we ever made any serious enquiries. Bit like the Brodie Grundy stuff early this year, seems like there's no substance to it now. The media and other self proclaimed "trade experts" like that moron "AFL Trade Whisperer". "just like to fling mud and see if any of it sticks. Very few journo's in the AFL have any integrity these days.

If Lachie Whitfield is available I hope Dodoro in his ear. Exactly what we need!

Is he? I reckon for ourside runners we do OK. (while he'd still obviously be an upgrade) What we lack, and what is going to be more apparent over the years is inside grunt.

Parish, McGrath, Merrett, Heppell. That's a very small midfield.

If I was calling the shots, I'd have us in the ear of Hopper and Kennedy before Whitfield if I was to try get one of them out of GWS.

He would be a considerable upgrade on Colyer and he can also run all day and win his own ball.

You overlooked Myers, Langford, Laverde, Mitch, Clarke and Begley.

Think he meant to say with the younger players that're currently in the side it's a small midfield. Either way I think one of Hopper or Kennedy is a must, if we can get both then that's our midfield locked in for the next 6+ years.

Why include just the players in the side?

Lynch (GC) will be a FA next season.

Hope we are chasing a Joe/Lynch combo would be deadly it also means we can move Hooker back in defence.
I want him next to Joe badly, that's two 50-60+ goal a year key forwards along with Fantasia & Walla who can kick 30-40+, Stewart who could become a 20-30+ goal a year player and then whoever fills that last spot in the forwardline (with my preference being Laverde when fully fit).

At this point I'd say he's more likely to stay given he's their captain and whatnot but apparently he wants to wait and see what direction they go in and whether or not there's any improvement in the first half of next season before he does anything (personally hoping they keep Eade on and Lynch walks, because they won't improve under him).

The only question would be what happens to the backline? Does Hooker return alongside Hurley and one of Francis/Ambrose? Or do what is probably unthinkable and keep Hartley in the side and trade Hooker for an early pick?

Wouldn't trade Hooker but would trade Hartley or Brown.
