Would happily give up our third for Luke Dunstan. Not an enormous beast (190cm+) but big enough to have an influence around the contest. Done well for the Saints tonight

we don't have a third this year but i do agree he is a decent player we could do with in our midfield.

Say we delist Merrett, Long, Baguley and Green then that's four small forwards we've lost. Replacing these players with one small forward and using the three other list spots on our midfield is hardly stocking up on forwards.

How ironic.

The point was we've got too many, we get rid of some and then replace them, it's still arguably too many. I would have thought the idea is to get to the point where we bat so deep in the midfield that some of the mids have to play a little bit forward, rather than the other way around.

Every premiership side I've ever seen has had the former, meanwhile I've never seen anyone do anything significant when they fall into the latter category.

That's just it though. It would be poor list management if we moved on 4 guys in one position on the ground. We would require a break in case of emergency small forward.

You fail to recognise Josh Begley even Trav Colyer who would all be playing that hybrid small fwd/mid role required in the AFL. After all, they are depth who would be able to come in and play in 2019.

We also have a plethora of marking forwards to compliment the current smalls in our senior side. See Laverde, Langford, Houlihan in 12 months time. etc.

Whilst you wish to address our small forward role, we continue with 0 depth with our KPF stocks. Very few inside midfielders developing at VFL level. Outside runners is another area I would like us to address before small forwards.

each to there own but feel small forwards is well down on our list of needs imho
It's poor list management to begin with to have so many list cloggers in the same position.

I have mentioned Begley whilst Colyer is handy depth but plays predominantly on a wing at senior level.
Never said anything about marking forwards.

What I said was to remove 4 small forwards and replace them with one, freeing up three list spots. Use them on KPP's (Kreuger and Keitel are my favourites from the state leagues that can have immediate impact if required) and midfielders. It's simply a re-shuffle.

I understood your point. That's why I suggested the changes to have three spare list spots for other positions.

I do see your point but we have more pressing needs. If anything, we would likely take a small, crumbing forward late. If at all

I'm a big Shai Bolton fan (which is where the whole discussion began) and think his play style would really compliment the forward line we have built. I don't for a second doubt we have bigger needs and have said as much. Nevertheless, I think that adding a small forward should be on the agenda.

Off track somewhat, but I'd also love to add Will Brodie. Wonder what his price would be.

Not just Shai Bolton but look elsewhere and the options of small forwards are more prevalent than given credit for.

Any in particular you like? Shai's aerial and line-breaking ability are what draw me in and somewhat sets him apart from other smalls. We've seen just how valuable Orazio and Walla's midfield/half back cameos are.

I really like what Quinton Narkle from Geelong. A similarly dynamic small forward, he has power and speed and can turn a game on it's head in a quarter. Only 20 but expected to be a Geelong player sooner rather than later

Would we have a look at CEY or Greenwood from the crows? I'd love to have a crack at Greenwood if we could get the cheap. No third rounder doesn't help tho

Considering he elected to sign with them as a FA and is getting consistent game time, I'd be shocked if he was to leave. Having said that Adelaide are in a bit of a shambles at the moment, so anything is possible

EDIT Greenwood that is

I’d be happy with CEY. He’s been one of their better players when they’ve actually played him. He’s a big powerful man & would walk straight into our midfield rotation.

On the small fwd discussion, although definitely not our greatest need, I still see a need for a pressure sml fwd, clearly shown this year that Fantasia and Walla cannot do it by themselves, Green a touch too slow and we don't have anyone on the list that can provide the same amount of tackling pressure. Begley maybe with further development but not sure that is his go. Talking about premiership teams....well Richmond did quite well with 3 genuine small fwds last year didn't they?? I don't think you ever make a huge investment but a mutually beneficial trade could easily be made for a role player and someone who is surplus to another team. If the list management team completely ignored this deficiency in our team at the end of the year, which some on here seem to be suggesting they do, it would be disappointing.

I feel like green can be dropped and Colyer swapped in.

I know he generally played up on the wing but the midfield profile is quickly changing with an abundance of his small-quick type coming in.

I'd say he's been upgraded on by the inception of Parish, McGrath, Guelfi, Smith et al in the midfield, and will probably find his only suitable spot in 2019 being as a quick, pressure small forward.

Small forwards are also the most overrated players in the game. I'm talking about a small forward who really has no presence up the ground and is in essence a one position player. Someone like Jake Neade is a prime example. He excites crows finishing the work of others but really adds nothing structurally.

I'm not sure that I think that there is need for depth small forwards. Small forwards should be played because like Fantasia, Breust, Cyril or Wingard, they're gun forwards or they should just be hard working smalls with massive running power who are just as suited to playing in the middle or on a wing. That is, afterall, what Richmond's forward-line is made up of. Someone like Ben Ronke is another good example.

Small forwards are overrated because the structural function, the defensive part of being a small forward, can be performed by any disciplined small player. Yes some guys like Neade or Green have unique ability to crumb as forwards but the ability to rove the ball is still a skill that you'd expect of any small player. It's just not the same with the tall and mid-sized forwards.

I wouldn't have more specialist small forwards on a list than I would ruckmen and I'd only have two specialist ruckmen.
