This is the point. We're jumping at shadows here.

There has been no noise from GWS except to allow Shiel to explore his options.

If anything, we are likely to get him for less than what he is worth. Not a steal but a pick exchange that would be unlikely to occur when dealing with most other clubs in most other circumstances.

GWS has proven to be very pragmatic at the trade table and it has this salary cap issue.

On the subject of Shiel, I'm a little bemused by the comparisons to Smith and the idea that we shouldn't expect him to win a bnf.

Shiel is one of the players that kept Smith out of the middle at GWS and was good enough for no one to question an AA selection.

He's better than any mid we have. Anything less than top 5 in a bnf, assuming fitness etc, would be a real surprise. Shiel is exactly the sort of player to expect bnfs from.

I actually think the addition of Shiel will catapult Merrett into our best player by a long way. It’s perfect timing for Merrett really. Merrett was already a great player but he will become a superstar in 2019.

Hmmm
He's definitely been a key spoke in the wheel since his breakout year in 2015. I chuckle a bit at people saying his stats were down last year. Without Wilson and William's Whitfield moved back and Scully was injured. This took both our wings/outside mids away and Kelly and Shiel were moved largely outside to compensate. Both have stats for 2018 that indicate that change.

Who said this?

If Smith can win it, then of course Shiel can.

Beams has requested a trade back to Collingwood.

I wonder if we were in discussions

They gave up pick 5 (De Goey!), 25 and Jack Crisp to get him, which is a lot but also accepting that he was only on the market due to his Dad being ill.

Considering the Brisbane list manager just said they are finished their high-end draft phase of the list build and want mature players (ie Neale) and that he has 2 years left on his contract, I'd be asking Collingwood to pay more than what they probably have.

Tom Browne assuming just pick 18 gets it done is taking the piss.

Purple saying beams will only move the Collingwood

Sort of throws out the notion that he wants to move back for personal reasons. If that were the case he’d come to any Melbourne club.

We should at least be asking the question

What do you all suppose the chances of us somehow getting Beams would be?

What currency do Collingwood have to acquire him?

Could we give up a future 1st for him?

no

Only thing I have against Beams coming to us, is his age. We would need to be striking for a flag within 1-2 years to get the best from him.
And at what he would cost, not sure if it’s worth it (first rounder minimal)

Rather target someone 5 years younger than Beams, for a similar cost

He is a jet though, and am a fan of his footy.

Lower than Collingwood's. They have two first round picks available to them, however low they'll be. We'll already would have comitted at least one to the Shiel deal, and probably a future 2nd which will make it harder for us to trade for Beams

Am I the only one wondering why collingwood would even want beams given the deficiencies in their backlne. Yeah he is a gun but he is not really what they need

Collingwood haven't won a premiership since 1990 without Dayne Beams in their team. Clearly taking him back is the only way this will happen.

Is it possible that perhaps Beams was considering coming to Essendon (given what Connors was saying), but this would be
subject to Collingwood not wanting him. He was ethically obliged to give Collingwood that option, given how they allowed
him to go North to be with his sick father. When Collingwood heard he was nominating Essendon, they may may have said
"No way... he's coming here". Beams has never been one after the huge bucks.

Beams doesn't fit our list age profile and more importantly our salary cap squeeze. As Dodoro said yesterday, we've got to be mindful of our kids potential increase in salary over the years. Players like Langford, francis, parish, McGrath ect are going to command higher coin in the next few and we need to account for that.
Also for list profile, we aren't in need to top up and adjust from our strategy for a flag tilt in the next 2. The list has been built to grow together. Our recent recruiting is all about the next 5-6 not the next 2- even if our list does look good going into next year.

For the shiel trade.. if blues cough up a future second for him is our current and future first for shiel + blues future second far off the mark?

Interesting picks swap by Freo

They’re diversifying their bonds given they didn’t have a 2nd or a 3rd this year. Good deal given Port would pretty much do anything to get their mitts on Rankine or Lukosious

Now they’ve got far more ammo to add Hogan and Lobb and potentially be a player for Langdon as well
