well he has been burnt before (no pun intended)

12 months ago... I picture him like the bull in the bugs bunny cartoon, sitting there on the grinder sharpening his horns waiting for redemntion

To be fair to McCartney I get the feeling he was working under some ridiculous conditions at the Dogs, with the dickhead president constantly sticking his head up and Beveridge and others doing their best to publicly drive down Stringer’s value.

If memory serves I think McCartney was more open to our initial offers than the hierarchy. I’m sure he’ll be fine to deal with at GWS.

as long as connors and Shiel remain firm on Essendon the deal will get done, what choice do GWS have?
And despite any media beat up, including the HS update just then about us being in a stand off and other clubs circling, I remain confident a trade will be reached, especially since Shiel has already chosen us for less money than was offered at other clubs.

He has chosen us based on our chances at a premiership, how will that mindset change just because the trade has taken 1 it 2 days longer than hoped. I still believe the trade will go through tomorrow. Today they will nut it out and reach an agreement and tomorrow it will all be signed off.

That’s just my gut feel, no inside info

I hope we get Tom Scully, not just for the Hawthorne melts, but I have a strong desire to buy him grass fed meats and organic fruits and vegetables. But not like, just walk up to him and hand them to him. No, I'd want to bring them into his home and put the items away. I'd wash the fruits and vegetables in water and vinegar while Tom and I engage in small talk. I'd dry my hands on his dishtowel, neatly fold the paper bag and put it under the sink. It would be the most delightful afternoon.
I feel like i am missing out on something :(

I’ve zero anxiety on this one personally

There’s no way he remains at GWS due to cap issues.

He wants to come to Essendon

Connors is famous for getting his players to where they want to go.

Both clubs of course have their initial offers, a compromise will be reached as it always is.

Even if a first and a future second doesn't work, trading 2 firsts is still worth it for someone like Shiel.
I'm sure Dodoro will think the same as well.

Scully is the wrong player for us. He commands too much money and doesn't fill a need. With a full strength side we are actually going to really struggle to reward players who are demanding selection. It's already easy to imagine scenario where the likes of Redman, Begley and Guelfi are all tearing the VFL apart leaving us to wonder whether Langfords/Parish 23 touches were really all that good!

Same, yeah we would all like it to happen right away but the fact is trades of this magnitude (quality of player) always need working on, and they get done in the end.

I agree, usually the cycle of a club build reaches a point near premiership window time where it is flushed with worthy options that cant get a game and end up getting traded out to other clubs for more opportunity, its another genius but organic function that helps equilisation.

Last thing id want to do is bring in a scully and max the cap if it means losing one of our potential good kids that cant get opportinutes (or a pay rise)

isn't that what makes great sides win premierships? I think it's called overall team depth? Hence some tigers seeking better opportunities now.

It's better than a few years ago when we rewarded players with AFL games who didn't deserve it.

That was the strategy, absolutely. Massive pile of talent, sneak a flag or two before the cap squeezes too many players out. If the AFL designed it in a more staggered sense they'd reach the same end point as they will once the list settles, but without that shot at success in the early years.

They kinda nailed it for mine. It's not like they aren't getting anything for the guys moving out though, or falling off a cliff anytime soon!

They are moving out high end talent for high picks, replacing the talent on the field with high-picked players (academy+other high former picks), and then using said newly acquired high picks to continue the cycle!

Sure, they could have snagged an early premiership, but even without it, they've set up a cycle for continued future success.

It was certainly a much better strategy than any expansion team has had before it.

Trade Radio.

"This is why people are envious of Geelong, Hawthorne and Sydney, their ability to stay competitive in September."

5-12 (29%) in the last 3 seasons in September with only 2 of those wins coming against clubs not in that group. So removing Geelong beating Sydney and Hawthorn and Sydney beating Geelong their 2-12.(14%)

Super competitive.

Two firsts a very bad deal for us . Tom Mitchell traded for 16 and 58. 2 years younger, no injury concerns and 104 Supercoach points CF Shiel 90. That is benchmark.

Please don't use SuperCoach points

You guys reckon your club would have a word with mark Robinson going early especially after JM came out this morning saying the 2 page spread was baffling considering a trade has not been done.
He might of undermined the negotiations to a certain extent ?
Still think you guys get shiel

All it takes is 2-3 injuries which will happen and you're depth is tested. It would be negligent of Dodo not to pursue talent that would improve our best side. Scully would slot beautifully into our midfield/wing rotation.

What Robinson says doesn't reflect what the club says and McCartney obviously knows that as a list manager himself. More of a dig at the media. The arrow is being drawn very long here.

I don't think we give a shit about that article and absolutely ****ing lol if you think an article undermines negotiations.

At the risk though of filling our cap up, resulting in us losing some youngsters, thus affecting our depth as a result?
