FWIW we're sending the team (recruiters) out to wangaratta this weekend to watch Dragons vs Rebels.

Family member of a very good mate works alongside Blair but the prick wont spill a word on what they think. Just nods and agrees with everything I say except that the butcher needs to go :drunk:
That is good information but I think you will find it is the Bushrangers who play in Wangaratta, not the Rebels

We will get a better idea of Jagga this week in better conditions.

Can't criticise his disposal in those conditions. Just a rubbish game.
VFL have the bye this week.

If draft was today, who would people take?

I'm currently on the Sid Draper bandwagon.

Perfomance: I think he's only behind Smith & early season Smillie and last year he was ahead of both. Considering he missed pre-season this is an incredible effort.

Traits: He's quick, elite agility, uses it well, he's strong through the hips and core, has a good defensive side for an elite mid.

Fit: on a needs basis, which is just a bonus to the above, he's the one that fits best with TT & Hopper.

I really struggle to see how he doesn't end up a better player than Smith. The downside and something I have no way of knowing is he could end up a better player for Smith for Adelaide/Port if he bails lol.
Draper if we knew there was no risk of him wanting out in 3 years when his first contract ends, otherwise I'd take Smith without hesitation

no we dont. Its next week

A lot of people are against it because they think we'll be left with no senior players while the kids are comnig through, but we'd still have the following 25+ players at the start of 2025:

33 - Pickett*
32 - Prestia, Lynch
31 - Broad
30 - McIntosh*, Vlastuin, Nank
29 - Short
28 - Hopper
27 - Taranto, Graham
26 - Lefau, Young
25 - Miller, Balta

* If re-signed

That's 2/3 of a team if they all player, mixed through all positions. There's also another dozen players 22+. Plenty imo.
Graham is gone also and good riddance to him.

I'm in favour of doing it. Its 3 years of pain but then if we can keep that group of draftee's together and happy we'll be a superstar team.

We can draft in some fringe experience to cover the loss of Baker, Bolton and Rioli at the back end of the draft also. We could even pick up someone like Oliver for peanuts to cover.

Also, I actually wouldn't mind Tsatas. He is quick and a very good accumulator, and can work on his disposal. Would already be a huge upgrade on Dow you'd think. Sure, he can't break into the Dons lineup, but their midfield (whilst not amazing, it's fairly good) has no open spots for him right now.

If we can get Tsatas for a pick in the 20s I'd do it, perfect timing for our rebuild.

Also Essendon sort of owes us...

Rutten (despite being shafted by them), Caracella, Rance for a period, bid on Rioli JR, Townsend, Durham, McDonough, D'Ambrosio, I'm probably missing other things. They went hard on us for 3-4 seasons there.

If Bombers are willing to trade a player they took at pick-5 just 2-years into their career for a pick beyond 20 then that’s enough warning for me to steer clear! Clear evidence hey don’t expect him to become anything better than a B-grader, otherwise they’d keep him. We’ve got enough midfielders we need to try and develop - Sonsie already can’t get any midfield minutes … why bring in Tsatas and add another?

And how did the Suns go?
Their issue was the kids spent most nights cruising the strip. They also didn't have any culture, base or existing players the likes of Lynch, Prestia, Taranto, Hopper, Balta, Vlaustin, Gibcus, Brown, Lefau & Nank to build from.

#lolNorf will do a Hawthorn with their kids next year and our haul would match or even exceed what they've picked up over the last 3 years.

2010 was a pretty shit draft too.

Cal Twomey suggested we could trade Baker and Bolton to Fremantle for picks 6, 12, 15, and then Dan Rioli to Gold Coast for picks 7 and 10 (we'd likely have to give a sweetener back the other way).

How would people feel about this? I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Rocking up to the draft with 1, 6, 7, 10, 12, 15 plus possibly a couple of second rounders, that's a crazy start to a rebuild.
I'd much rather keep Bolton, do the rest and then try get hold of Lions first pick.

Would leave us with 1, 7, 10, 12 & 16, then ideally hold onto 21 but that would probably need to be passed on to Lions.

That should be pretty obvious I would’ve thought

Anything less and we are fools
You don’t finish bottom to not use at least 1 top 5 pick

It’s all relative and depends on the depth. If there is genuinely 7-8 x players with claims on #1 as there seems to be at the moment, then wouldn’t 7 and 10 be much better than #1?

For example Rowell was a clear #1. That same draft Freo got Young and Serong at 7 and 8. Imagine Freo had #1 and traded it for 7 and 8? Genius move as Serong and Young are arguably both superior to Rowell … and Rowell was a clear #1!

There’s an easy way to analyse this. Right this very second with all we know, who would you choose?

1. Josh Smilie (touted 1)

Or

2. Jagga Smith (6) and Armstrong (14)

Or

3. Luke Trainor (7) and Sid Draper (9)

People get too caught up in the romance of pick #1.

Right this second are you taking Smilie alone, or option 2 or 3? As that’s the reality of the decision.
