Surely Cooney is just taking the piss with that one.. LOL!
Nothing he says is serious, he's hired to play the clown between the more serious journalistic slots in the breakfast, lunch and peak-hour slots. Occasionally he gives a serious opinion on the Dogs or Essendon, but even then not really.

When does the next trade come? Seems that most of the remaining deals are either complex, linked to a bigger deal or had only been formulated in recent weeks.

Rioli to Suns maybe?
Lukosious for F1 i reckon - that or some pick swap

We all know that trade week is a waste of time, AFL only do it to remain in the news for an extra week.

No reason why they can't do a trade day a week after the Grand Final.

It’s more like a trade window than a trade period. Its a time when trades can be done, not that they’re being done constantly.

They need to make the period shorter so that clubs get their shit organised in advance.

They probably also need more time to do their planning and talk to their coaches, player managers, players. Especially for clubs and players if they’re playing finals. Bottom dwellers have 6 weeks of the coaches’ full attention and players trying to get out or get in and shopping around…

GF teams get 6 days between GF Saturday and the FA period starting the Friday after. They’re either in a massive rush, trying to do exit interviews within 3 days of season completion and also doing all their trade/fa planning, or everything is done except actually getting the key people (players, coaches) on the same phone line to agree to things. (Obviously some players meet other clubs quietly, but many don’t want to know about it during the season as they’re trying to concentrate on what they have to do.)

I don’t really want a mid-year trade period, I think there’s enough of that already. But they could move the national draft to the end of January, so that kids can do Year 12 knowing they’ll be on an AFL list at the end of the year. Perhaps those draft contracts are conditional on playing reps or school footy and completing a minimum number of hours or credits of school/work before the end of October. They could also have training plans and attend training 1-2 times per week (like the AFLW draftees do when drafted before finishing Y12)

Doing that means they can then move the trade period back a couple of weeks into late-October or November, and the national draft then coincides with the supplemental selection period, with SSP prospects perhaps attending combines with the ND crop.

Also means women’s footy gets a bit of clean air after the men’s GF, and they can do the AFLW draft and combines at around the same time as the men’s ones, hopefully making it a bit more economical?

We probably say it every year, but has the first 3 days of this period been the most boring of all time?
