Protect what value he has?
Protect them from who? He's had the chance to test the market (when it wouldn't cost the other club a transfer fee) and he's realised this will be the best he gets.

If there was genuine interest from anyone else (at the level he wants), he'd already be gone.

But he doesn't want to play for Palace and Leeds. He won't want to move to clubs below where he thinks he should be playing.

Even on a free, the clubs he would've been hoping to play for, haven't come in for him.

Arsenal really don't need to offer him a 5 year contract for him to come back.

He wouldn't even start for those two clubs.

Leeds would be recruiting him as a backup for Bamford and whether he plays ahead of Edouard is very debatable.

He's scored in 3 PL games in his career and basically the rest of his exposure is at Championship level or in Cup competitions.

Agreed - which is why he'll stay at Arsenal.

But Arsenal hold all the power here. Offering a 5 year deal just seems odd to me.
