Trav Varcoe: lucky?

Anyone else surprised that this hit only earned Varcoe 1 week?

There was a kid in the media not long ago who got his neck broken in a very similar action.

I thought he was unlucky to cop a suspension at all. I thought fine at most, but the impact does look awful on replay.

Bummed for him, he’s been having a rough patch and actually played well against the Saints.. now mandatory break just as the wheels got rolling.

I guess as a Collingwood supporter it's probably incumbent on me to be a bit considered in my opinions here so I will do my best. In my mind, when I look at the MRP decisions in regard to both Ablett (twice) and Mumford, I have a little difficulty accepting that Varcoe deserves a week. I suppose if I could see some consistency in the MRP's decisions it would be easier to accept this but I think therein lies the rub. The way the MRP has been adjudicating these decision lately just leaves people scratching their heads. Whilst I have some doubts that it will be challenged by the club, I actually feel that it has a duty to Varcs to stand up against a system which seems patently broken.

What's seems broken to me is Durdin and Varcoe both go for football acts, but Ablett doesn't for an elbow.

I don't even bother working out what should be a suspension or not these days
I don't really seeing him going for the ball though.
He was in position and kind of had his hands down but didn't really motion to pick up the ball to me.

Agree. It's definitely all about consistency to me though.

To me that opinion can only come from watching slo-mo replays or still shots. When viewed at normal speed it seems entirely plausible that Varcs simply protected himself when he realised he had been beaten to the ball. Surely this doesn't compare to raising the elbow and leaving the ground. There is clearly no hint of that in Varcoe's actions.

I don't think you can pin any blame on the technique of the saints player. He was pretty much standing still with a pies player up his ass, and just bent over to pick up the ball. There was no malice and im a big fan od Varcoe but he has to show a bigger duty of care than to barrel front on into a stationary player picking up the ball.

Weak as piss by my Club...…...deserved a fine if we take precedent into account.
