Re: Travis Johnstone

i also thought he lacked body strength in physical contests, although no1 has ever claimed he is a contested player so he can hardly be criticised for that i guess.

That was the biggest thing i saw last night. Tj's tackling was like he was slapping them with a wet sock. He had no passion to chase hard either. Must improve these aspects of his game.

Re: Travis Johnstone

I am wondering if people are setting the bar too high for Johnstone. He is not in the Black class of midfielder in my book, but he has the same level of class when he turns it on. I think anything over 20 touches a game will be a good game for TJ this year, as he has the ability to set up 2 or 3 goals a game with those touches.

Maybe we may just have to live with 1 to 2 quarters of brilliant flare a game than 4 quarters of consistent footy.

stats are just a number.
speaking of numbers i believe only about 10 of those 20 were effective.

I was taking that into account. Johnstone's 10 effective touches would be a lot more useful to the club than say Selwood's 15 effective touches IMO and that is one reason he is so useful...

Re: Travis Johnstone

I thought Melbourne got rid of Johnstone to send a message to their playing list.

Based on their performance against the Hawks so far, I'm not sure the message got through.

I bet Johnstone is so glad he choose the Lions, at least we'll get somewhere in the short and long term future.

Re: Travis Johnstone

On the footage on the tv, when the lions were walking subiace off TJ's head was down and he looked very disappointed, he was probably very upset with the way he played and is even more hungry to prove all those people wrong who doubt him.

Re: Travis Johnstone

Interesting that when Leigh was asked 'how did you view Johnstone, what does he do to compliment your midfield?' he replied 'he's got a bit of work to do'. It sounds like Leigh wasn't overly happy with Johnstone's game.

Re: Travis Johnstone

His kicking was poor, but it was a tight game and the footy was hot, he still hit some good targets under pressure.

He's a fantastic pickup, surely nobody was expecting Simon Black with long hair? Triple Premiership, Brownlow Medallist, Norm Smith Medallist's don't grow on trees!

Re: Travis Johnstone

When Drummo went down with a quad injury Trapper started taking the kick in duties. Drummo is expected to be out for a while so my guess is Johnstone will now take over that quarter back role.

I noticed that too Grim, but Adcock and Begley i think took a few as well, not sure who will do the kick in duties if Drummo's out.

Re: Travis Johnstone

Travis Johnstone you are a star! Pretty much took over drummonds role as the main kick in guy and did it well. Didn't waste a disposal tonight and was hard at the ball too!

WELL DONE!

Re: Travis Johnstone

really showed his experience at times by instead of blazing away into the forwards he waited and found a nice neat pass to a leading forward. this is the reason he will be great for our team.

fed 2 to brown last week, and probably another 2 this week. will improve as the season goes on and he settles into the team, but great start so far.

Re: Travis Johnstone

Very good game in the wet and he was still able to hurt teams with is disposal, he should now be our designated kick out player. Johnstone is someone you give the ball to when he is free.

Re: Travis Johnstone

Big Lions win helps Johnstone settle in

A player who once wanted to be a Demon for life is starting to feel at home at the Brisbane Lions.

And all it took was a two-point thriller against AFL arch rival Collingwood in front of more than 33,000 screaming fans.

Lions coach Leigh Matthews said their white knuckle ride at the Gabba on Friday night did more than break their winning duck for 2008 - it helped ex-Melbourne onballer Travis Johnstone finally settle in.

The former Melbourne midfielder arrived with much fanfare for the 2008 season following a three-way trade that sent Lions ruckman Cameron Wood to Collingwood.

Johnstone was the first to admit upon his Brisbane arrival that he had wanted to play out his career at Melbourne before the Demons planted the seed for a trade.

Certainly he would have been forgiven for feeling torn after 10 years and more than 150 games at Melbourne.

However, Matthews believed the 27-year-old had finally checked into his new home after ditching his "baggage" in the absorbing round two win.
"I think it is very hard for experienced players to change clubs, it's not easy," Matthews said.

"There's a whole lot of baggage in terms of why they left, leaving the club they spent 10 years at, it takes a while to settle in, for them to feel a part of it."

In only his second AFL game with Brisbane, Johnstone's 22 disposals were crucial in the Lions' 13.18 (96) to 13.16 (94) victory.

Judging by the way he joined in the Lions' wild celebrations after Jed Adcock kicked the match winning goal in the dying minutes, Johnstone is settling in nicely.

"Hopefully when he plays well in a win like this you get over that gulf and feel a part of it," Matthews said.

Matthews also had high hopes for another new face - their top draft pick Lachlan Henderson.

His AFL debut drew comparisons with his champion teammate and childhood idol Jonathan Brown - for all the wrong reasons.

The 18-year-old managed just two kicks, a handball and one mark against Collingwood.

But Matthews was happy to cut Henderson some slack.

"Jonathan Brown had a very bad first game and has become a champion," Matthews said.

"First games don't matter but Lachlan will have better second, third, fourth and fifth (games).

"He's a good kid, Lachlan. I've got a lot of time for him. I believe he'll be a really good player for a long time.

"But first game, damp conditions, mud - it was a tough gig."

The only concern for Matthews was Josh Drummond (quad).

"That's always a lot of weeks unfortunately," he said of Drummond's injury.

Re: Travis Johnstone

I made some comments about his poor work rate and not committing. The game against the pies he started putting his body on the line more and his disposal was better again. I loved seeing him run back with the flight of the ball, that in my opinion shows he is willing to put his body on the line. :thumbsu:

With Drummond injured, you are right that Johnstone should be our designated kick out player. Hopefully Josh won't be injured for too long but when Travis took the kick outs he did a good job and was definitely our best option.

Travis passes Lion initiation test

A PLAYER can arrive at a club with a 10-year resume as a former No. 1 draft pick that incudes a best-and-fairest, but still need to prove himself.
That is even more so if the club is the Brisbane Lions, which values selfless acts above any statistic.
On Friday night at the Gabba Travis Johnstone made a split-second decision to ignore an obvious oncoming threat to make a crucial play for his team.
Before the game he was a former Melbourne player with a reputation. After it he was one of the boys.
In the second quarter Johnstone found himself the only Lion in the vicinity as Collingwood full-forward Anthony Rocca steamed out on the lead.
Johnstone went back with the flight of the ball and got a fingertip on it before Rocca crashed into him, sending him spinning like a windmill.
Johnstone, who has faced criticism in the past for his endeavour, shrugged off his act of bravery.
"It is probably those little things they (Brisbane) expect from you," he said.
"You gain respect from those hard things, probably more than going out and getting plenty of kicks and not throwing your body around. This club builds itself on that, they expect it to be done and believe if you do it the rest will come."
Johnstone picked up 22 classy possessions in the Lions' two-point win.

Re: Travis Johnstone

Not trying to downplay the incident at all -- as I was happier to see that act than I was to see another 10-12 pinpoint kicks -- but if it was the incident I think it was, I'm pretty sure it was Cameron Wood coming the other way, rather than Pebbles. Gee, who would not check their fact for writing the paper? Get your head over the ball, Hamo.

Nevertheless, Trav wouldn't have known it wasn't Rocca when he went, and Cam would have TJ covered by a good 10 kilos.

Must have made the Dees supporters grimace too. The subtext of what he's saying above is "At Melbourne they've never valued that stuff as highly, so you can get away without doing it."

Re: Travis Johnstone

Our Trav currently has the dubious honour of leading the League for clangers.
Could be worse though.

At least it means he's getting his hands on it a bit.

Re: Travis Johnstone

I can't remember if I have said this or not but I reckon his clanger count is always going to be high because of the high risk style of his disposal. When he pinpoints a leading forward in a congested 50, we all gasp. A lesser player would bomb the ball to the goal square and hope for a result. It is a high percentage play in that it won't cause an immediate turnover but a low %age play in that you aren't particularly likely to score. He takes the punt and tries to engineer the result that will most likely lead to a kick on goal. In other words, he puts his teammates to advantage more effectively.

However, I think the corollary of that is that, when it doesn't come off, it hurts. If you are trying to pin point 1 teammate among 4 opponents, there is a risk that less than perfect disposal will lead to a clanger.

For me, we have so few players who can do what he does that I don't really mind that his clanger count is high. I reckon he'd also be pretty high on the "creates scoring opportunities which ordinary players can't see" rankings too.

Re: Travis Johnstone

congrats to lions on getting our(demons) only midfileder.
was a delight to see him play well to beat the pies, hope he can help you'se to finals as we no hope.
also noticed he had 20+ kicks, not bad, better than melb there midfield only hand 15 between them.

Re: Travis Johnstone

Agreed. I certainly wasn't editorializing.

Was just going through the Herald Sun stats and thought it was in interesting.

Other stats of note...

Travis is third overall for kicks.

Corrie and Leuey both had 100 percent disposal effectiveness last week.

Black is leading the league for contested possessions and 6th for clearances.

Jamie is leading the competition for frees against (no surprises).

Luke is leading the league for tackles.

Sorry, this is OT. ;)
