It's been announced that Triple J will be counting down the Hottest 100 of the last 20 years (to celebrate 20 years of the Hottest 100, duh) on June 8-9. Voting began on May 14th and closes at 23:59 AEST on Sunday June 2nd.

To be eligible, a song must have been released between 1/1/1993 and 31/12/2012, which will rule out Triple J all-time chart favourites Smells Like Teen Spirit and Love Will Tear Us Apart...

Thinking cap time ...

Yay, a JJJ countdown that is mildly interesting. I'm in, somewhat enjoyed the 'greatest' one in 2009.

Just looked at the 20 number 1's for the last 20 years. It's fair to say the majority are fairly shit songs.
Hopefully the flavour of the month songs that often do well in the annual polls but are forgotten soon after will get missed in this poll. Having no songs from 2013 allowed will help

Killing in the name, is an interesting one. USA release date was November 92. But the Aussie release if I remember was around february 93. So may still be eligible and if it is will still be close to taking it out.

Actually it did finish #6 in the 1993 Hottest 100

This'll be fun. But really realllly hard to come up with a list. Can it only be top 10 submissions?
It will be fun. Not sure if there's any other restriction such as having had to make one of the Hottest 100s, would narrow it down to only 2000 songs  The Top 10s will still be 200 songs to choose from.

I think I have a headache...

My shortlist ATM:

It'll be interesting to see how female vocalists go in the poll given the controversy a few years ago...

Without giving it any thought whatsoever, there's only 2 female vocalists in my list.

edit: and only 1 female in the 2 preliminary lists above mine

If you read the rules for voting on the JJJ website, it says live recordings of previously released tracks are ineligible. So I don't know whether that will rule out "About A Girl" as it was originally released in 1989. So I don't know whether they will consider the MTV unplugged version (which is much superior to the original) as a live recording or as a cover/different song that would then make it eligible.
