Oops, missed the current bands part.

Love Slash's solo work, Alter Bridge, Gojira have some cool stuff coming out of France, Megadeth, Stone Sour, QOTSA, Slipknot, don't mind Loaded, The Darkness.

Ummmm, yeah, I think you missed the current bands part again.

I'll give you QOTSA.

But the Darkness are so old they've already split up and reformed. Megadeth formed when I was three years old. Slash now tours as a karaoke act of his greatest moments in the 80's.

I don't even know who the majority of the other acts are but I assume they pre-date my birth.

Thanks for trying gramps.

Every one of those bands still play. Megadeth released a new album a month or so back, Slash released one last year, and has another in production now. The Darkness has been playing across the UK, and has just announced plans for a US tour, with an Australian one in the works. Slipknot are out here next year for Soundwave, with rumours about a new album, the first post paul Grey's death.

Alter Bridge formed out of the ashes of Creed in the early 2000s, but with Myles Kennedy on lead vocals, and far less cheese, Stone Sour was Corey Taylor and Jim Root's first band, formed in the late 90's originally, but released their forst album in about 02 (and their latest last year - was great too). Gojira are a French metal band, have been around for about 10-12 years or so (originally known as Godzilla).

They're all current sunshine. And I'm 22, making you older than me (seeing as you were born in about 1980?)

Strong lack of knowledge there champ, you heard of something called Google? It enables you to check information on subjects before you make a knob of yourself! :thumbsu:

And yeah, apart from the occasional listen of Full Metal racket, don't listen to Triple J. Like many have said, iPods and the internet negate the requirement of listening to radio, it's the iPod or SEN when i'm driving!

FWIW it still shits on commercial radio. JJJ play what I'd call "mainstream alternative music" - it's alternative to current commercial pop but it's still quite mainstream.

Some of it is good (but then it gets overplayed anyway), some of it is terrible and some of it is so-so. Its fanboys/girls definitely need to appreciate that it's not as alternative as they think it is. But whatever, getting annoyed at JJJ listeners more than commercial radio listeners just because JJJ are a bit more self-superior is just rich.

Thank **** for PBS, RRR & Kiss.

Have to admit I rarely listen to JJJ anymore (PBS first, RRR second) but they still fill a vital role - plenty of people growing up in regional areas that don't get community radio would only have bland crappy pop as an alternative if it didn't exist.

Was a fan of the JJs in the late 90s I'll admit so still have fond memories.

I agree wholeheartedly.

The absolute mind numbing annoyance of commercial radio can never be understated. That myriad of mashed, blended noise is so hopeless. It's the sound of such saturation. Triple J has a plethora of idiotic 'hip' Sydney-siders who started wearing skinny jeans when Topman started stocking them. But Triple J still beats the commercial drivel. Thom Yorke describes it best in Meeting People is Easy - it's just like a fridge buzz. I won't repeat the negatives of Nova and the like, because it's well documented. It's an embarrassing and appalling indictment of popular culture.

But Triple J certainly churns out some tripe. Some abhorrent sounds. Their pointing toward "indie" never ceases to be bland. Folksy whispers and Phoenix is barely alternative. And yet a majority of Triple J listeners I know sincerely think they're cutting edge and different. Triple J and its presenters say they give a leg up to young Aussie acts, but if you're not adhering to a current trend or a rap group, you're ****ed. Snakadaktal are so lame, yet are pampered as the future of Australia's music. How much airway did Tame Impala have before Innerspeaker? Snakadaktal have a cute female singer and churned out, sub-Foals-influenced, indie pop slant... it's uninspired, it's boring, and yet it's the epitome of what Triple J stand for. An alternative to the mainstream, not alternative.

I don't listen to the radio anyway, so perhaps my opinion is void and flawed. I like a bit of Radio National, because sometimes, the book and film and art segments can be really interesting. I think radio is a pretty dead medium though (but then again, I don't and won't drive).

The six stations in my car, in order.

Nova, Mix 101.1, Fox, Gold, Triple M, Triple J.

And SEN is the alternative.

I have (unfortunately) exactly the same 6, except for RRR instead of one of those first 3 (not sure which they're all the same to me - and I only have those for the missus). Also SEN on the other band too.

I tend to agree with Silent Alarm - commercial radio is actually painful for me to listen to and for a while I was forced to listen to it in the workplace. JJJ, while still far better than those stations, is a pale shadow of what it was 15 years ago IMO.

I gave up on FM radio some 10 years or more ago now except if I am driving late of evening I will listen to PBS or RRR.
When I am on the road during the day (which is a lot) I listen to mostly SEN or 3AW and for music it is cds cds cds.

The OP is so true. JJJ has become a try hard wankfest far removed from the station it first was when it launched in Victoria some 20 odd years ago.

You're right there champ, I do have a strong lack of knowledge in regards to shit music.

I'd be interested in what music you listen to? You can say what you will about a band like Megadeth (hey even I know Dave Mustaine can't sing) but to still be releasing music and staying relevant nearly 30 years after forming, and being a pioneer of a new genre of music is impressive to say the least. How many bands out there today are really doing something new?

And speaking of things that are no longer relevant, WinmarToLockett??????????? :D

Gave up on JJJ when I was about 16/17. Annoying announcers combined with a lot of shitty indie dreck just got to be too much (even back in 1993). Good to hear that apparently nothing has changed.

I did listen in to their 'punk/hardcore' show (Short Fast Loud or something) and it was horrendous. Tweeny metalcore and K-Mart pop-punk is hardcore? Something is rotten in Denmark...

i dont like the fact that the presenters can't diss the music.

if i was sitting there i'd apologise to the folk before i was about to chuck on some pez/something shit.

How would you fell if you had to apologise before every song? Because that's what would happen.

Funnily enough 2 JJJ presenters had to apologise to their followers that support them for calling the PM a "Whore" and her man bag "Gay"

On the money I say!

Not music related maybe but relevant yes.

Don't like Tom & Alex, and the type of music 'fans' that they represent. Which seems to be what much of this thread is about. It's like elitist denial.

I don't like them either, all a bunch of elitist douches.

Some good music does get played though, interlaced with alot of shit.

Black Keys, for example.
