Fox using their own graphics on women's cricket instead of 7's is unusual isn't it?
They are selective with it. It’s because they are at the ground. They used 7’s graphics but their commentary for all the other matches this series and also the NZ & IND series. They used their own graphics for the WBBL final.

I've been having a think about what Channel 7's rumoured central scorebug might look like and decided to mock one up.

I'll preface this by saying I don't like it personally, but I've tried to create an accurate representation of what I think 7 will go with. I really dislike 7's score graphics on footy and cricket. It might have something to do with the HeyWow font they use, but I think it looks really cheap compared to what Fox Sports have.

I based it heavily off their cricket package, at first I tried to make what was more or less a condensed version of their international cricket scorebug.

I played with it a lot, but the angles all being in the same direction made it really tricky to make it feel balanced and symmetrical, which I think is essential for a centred scorebug. You either have to stagger the top and bottom text in each section to match the angles (like I did in the centre), or you can centre the text and have differing gaps on either side. I tried to make this work but just wasn't able to find something I was happy with.

My V2 still uses angles, but has them in opposing directions either side of the central timing section. I think this looks a lot more balanced.

I think this is something like what they'll end up going with. I've tried to mirror their branding as much as possible, bar maybe the red in the centre section as it'll clash with a few too many teams.

I'm not a fan of having the full score on display at all times like 7 currently do, but there is plenty of room in this design for that. Less is more IMO.

I'm not a fan of the idea as I think it'll cover the ball when it's on the ground, but thought I'd dust off photoshop for old times sake.

Bonus points for anyone who can spot what's wrong with poor old Jack Darling's head.

i wonder if that was an AFL directive, both 7 and Fox started doing it at the same time

Their previous cricket ones weren’t great especially the BBL & women’s internationals but these new ones are better.

Their AFL ones aren’t that bad too. It matches the colours of the teams and shows the full picture of the game with the score breakdown.

I feel like it helps people who may not fully understand AFL piece together what's going on. Also highlights the uniqueness of the game.

Just some concepts I'd done the backend of '23 that were stuck as psds, thought now might be a good time to let them see the light of day.
Theme is bottom-third nfl style scorebugs. They're not bad. About the only thing I might have tweaked was maybe adding a network logo to the bar ones, but the AFL probs wouldn't want that anyway.

I just really dislike the font and as has been pointed out, having the score graphics down the bottom where it can obscure the play when the ball is on the ground doesn’t make sense when you can put it up high.

IMO 7’s old graphics from pre-COVID were much better.

I don't understand the hate of 7's current AFL graphics. They're small and out of the way yet still very readable, and they make better use of colour than the Fox ones. The lack of team names is no more a barrier to new viewers than the use of just logos or just initials as is the case in most sports around the world, and it keeps the graphics smaller and cleaner.

Moving it to the middle and removing goals and behinds would be a bad move.

The placement of the old graphics and the current ones are the same. The only difference is having logos and colours matching the jumpers + the full score breakdowns. All which imo is positives

I’m well aware the placement hasn’t changed.

Bottom left placement isn’t ideal but is passable. Bottom central just makes no sense for AFL unless it’s a thin bar right at the bottom of the screen. Even then, you need to allow for a safe area due to differing zoom levels across TV’s and mobile.

I’m interested to see what they produce but unsure if they’ll be able to do it effectively.

It’s an out there idea on my behalf, but I wonder if it’s possible to have the centred scorebug become a transparent watermark when play is happening on field to mitigate the risk of the ball ‘hiding’ behind it. IE: the centred section just shows the quarter with no timer, and then as a team scores it becomes the full coloured version like you’ve done above.

Interesting concept. It’s definitely do-able as lots of sports video games do exactly that.
