if you don't have foxtel you screwed

Why? I don't have foxtel, but I'm happy walking to the local for games.

Still the same number of games on free to air. They're just LIVE.

Holy crap. HOLY. CRAP. What a terrible deal.

1. Still limited free-to-air live broadcasting - only 3 games per week will be live <--- Absolutely JOKE. We are in 2011, not 1981.

Yeah. What were you expecting? 9 matches live free to air?

3 free to air live is terrific. We can put up with one on delay.

The delayed match will often be at the G or Etihad, so why not go?

not much has changed for the Dees since 1981. Your team is as good now as it was then.

2. 90 minute fixed delay for Saturday matches (I guess 7 is moving Better Homes and Gardens to Saturday afternoon?). I mean, is this still how things are going to be run? Still? FFS.

The AFL are trying to maximise their TV revenue so they can prop up sides like yours. If they didn't have to, maybe they'd be able to get 7 to do all 4 live.

3. Every game live on Foxtel (that is a real embarrassment. Absolutely shocking. Live on Foxtel, not on free-to-air -- so much for sport LIVE on free-to-air. Who started the whole initiative anyway? Doesn't seem to have worked).

Really embarrassing? How many live matches were on free to air in 1981?

Before 1987, it was only the Swans every second Sunday.

Every game live on Foxtel... well Fox are paying over $500million for it, so I guess they want some content.

4. Online streaming exclusive to Telstra customers with a mobile phone. League is still backwards. Still no online league pass? Get a clue, AFL.

5. New Foxtel channel that you will need to fork out $80 per month for

In other words, if you don't have Foxtel, you're going to get the same shit delayed broadcasting you've had since forever.

Don't watch it then. Your teams serves up the same shit footy.

This year we get 4 matches Free to Air in Victoria. Only rarely are they live.

Next year we still get 4 matches free to air, but 3/4 of them are live.

If you can't see improvement then you must be watching the Dees.

Given that this deal is meant to take us five years into the future it occurs to me that:

Despite having a multitude of new digital FTA channels we dont get any extra footy.

Simply addressing the glaring faults from the last five years is hardly forward thinking for the next five years.

The AFL have addressed their own agenda of having AFL available in prime time in their growth markets.

Well there's an extra match every week for a start...

NSW, ACT and QLD big winners.

SA and WA big wins on being able to watch all matches. Too often you get situations where you can't watch Essendon vs. Carlton, but have two ways of watching Port Adelaide vs. West Coast.

SA and WA also have improvements with reduced delays. Disappointed they didn't get Friday Night live into SA. It's tricky in WA, but should definitely happen in SA.

VIC win too. There's the same amount of footy on Free to Air and much more of it is live. There's much more of it on Fox where it's all live too!

Cannot believe the amount of complaints in this thread. Anyone with Fox is rejoicing.

If you're a real fan you'll buy it and stop moaning, it's not even that expensive.

My only annoyance comes from having to watch Channel 7 once a year on Grand Final day.

The thing that pissed me off previously is... you didn't have the option to watch games live... NOW YOU DO... I go to every Carlton game in Melbourne... and most interestate games are live in melbourne... but a few weeks back, what options did Essendon fans have of watching their team live without going to sydney? NONE...

Even if every free-to-air broadcast is delayed... the fact that now everyone has the option (even if it's to go to your local) to watch the game live... is a massive improvement... KUDOS AFL

Gotta give Andy D his due getting $1.25 billion for the rights is a massive effort and getting all games live on Foxtel a massive win.

Andy you have earned your $2 mill today, time for an celebratory éclair big fella

It's going to be interesting seeing what this does to attendance levels. I'll still go watch the Pies and a few opposition teams with mates but what will the casual ones do? Probably stay home and watch on TV.

Nah. Bruce and Dennis will commentate the four Seven games (unless Seven deck out on another team) and Foxtel will have commentary teams to cover the nine Foxtel games.

This is fantastic. Seven have been ****ed and rightfully so for the tripe they've served up over the last five years.
This. :thumbsu:

I will say it like this so ppl might understand it

FOXTEL (Kim Williams) OWNS CHANNEL 7. Leckie you are pwned

The return of Jason Bennett (what happened to him???)? Sandy Roberts too?

I have the feeling Leckie will sell one or two of the games to Ch 9 or 10 again and we'll be left with half the games and half the effort from Channel 7 (again).

I felt that Channel 7 did a brilliant job pre-2002 because they had so much footy they thought they'd go the whole hog - That Was the Season That Was, Grand Final Marathons, Talking Footy, Sunday Gameday - they really put effort into the extras.

But with the current deal ending this year they just seem to have thought "nah, we've only got two games, no-one will notice." I really do hope they keep all four should that be the case.

Great news, as someone who has foxtel.

9 live games, what more to ask.

People complaining about channel 7, get foxtel - that simple.

You realise you will probably have to pay extra.
Its always simple to just throw money at something, but not necessarily smarter.

For a large number of people four games a weekend is plenty, but its watching your own team when its not on FTA or when you can't get to the game that becomes problematic.

Sometimes its only a few games a year, certainly not worth the price of Foxtel.

The other thing that has been pointed out is that seven's filming of the footy has never been as good as what 9 had.
Foxtel will have the same filming , just a different blabbermouth.

Can anyone clarify if the fox footy channel will be on the standard package or, more likely, on the sports package?

It will be part of the current sports package you will have to get that package to get it is not part of the basic package

WOW! Just WOW!

can someone inform how much the Seven Network will be contributing to this? I'm sure they've crunched the numbers, but I have doubts about how they can make some coin out of this.................and telecast in HD too!

Obviously, Foxtel have made a significant investment here too, in an attempt to increase subscriptions in VIC, SA & WA.

does the new deal allow the new foxtel footy channel to be bought through foxtel on xbox 360?

if so this makes getting all AFL games much more affordable than going for the regular foxtel subscription

Chism , have you been listening to the reports, 10 pulled out and Nine doesnt have the moeny. As far as foxtel it seems that there will be a subscription upgrade to go with the win
My major question . If you want to watch your team regularly will we end up with a main event type scenario. I suspect you will pay per game, so pay TV as I have said before, is, even though you pay already, you still have, pay pay pay pay pay pay pay pay pay pay pay pay pay pay pay pay TV
WITH THE ADDED MARVELOUS OPTION FOR FOXTEL, FOR AAAAAAADVERTISING!!!!!!!!Watch it happen.

It'd be more cost-effective for Foxtel to just take the C7 feed and commentary for C7's games. The expenses to provide enough exclusive crew and talent to cover all 9 games would be mammoth! The would need to provide 4-5 different crews just to cover Saturdays. There's travel, accommodation, meals, etc, too. The rights fee is just the right to broadcast. Production expenses would be huge to cover all 9 games, particularly in HD.
