Why do they wear different kits to the rest of the players in the team?

And, who chooses the the kit each goalkeeper wears? Is it them, the team, the league?

Something to do with the referee so he can see and acknowledge the goalie in the box full of players. Suppose to wear long sleeves aswell so it is clearer who touches the ball with their hands in the box. I think thats why it was but not 100% sure.

The kit manufacturers choose the kit, but the ref would have the power to make the keeper where a different one if there are colour clashes. Not sure about the long sleeve thing, Barthez wears short sleeves, Dudek as well?

Until about 1982, 'keepers had to wear plain jerseys from a limited number of colours (yellow, green, red, black). Long sleeves too.

The different coloured jerseys are there simply in order that the referee can differentiate the 'keeper from outfield players (remember too that until the late 60s, most 'keepers didn't wear gloves - another point of differentiation). Makes it easier to officiate on things like charges at corner kicks and the possibility that a keeper has handled outside his penalty area.

So everyone knows who the keeper is.For example if an opposition player were to be running after the ball and the keeper running out to get it as well but the opposition got there first and took the ball past him, then if no one knew who the keeper was any random player could take his spot in goal and use his hands to stop the shot going in.

I've always thought that was assumed knowledge to everyone? No disrespect or anything, but I've never heard that question from anyone ever.

BTW, I was wondering about this the other day, are there any teams in which the 'keeper is the best player/most valuable in the team?

I thought Buffon @ Juve would come close.

Not likely I wouldn't think but you always need a good keeper to win a trophy.

Arguably Real Madrid with Casillas.
