Coach Tyson Goldsack - Defensive Coach

Bassett was bad, but Goldsack would be out of his depth coaching at under 11 level.

Only need to hear him speak to realise how underwhelming his footy knowledge is, let alone his motivation skills. One of the oddest appointments and internal promotions we’ve had. The fact we have him, Lobbe, Kelly and Hartlett all at once is the definition of complete, complicit self-sabotage.

Bassset is kind of scapegoated because him joining Port coincided with the change of gameplan and introduction to the high press structure that we have seen a decade later.

That said, there might be something as if seems he cannot land another AFL job.

Mind you, last season he coached this Magpies side into finals.

Not all footy people sound like geniuses but they can be good at coaching.

Bassett's problem was his defensive structure required 16 players and Ken took them all away for high press.

How this Maggies side got to the finals last year is a mystery. But I still think Goldsack is a poor AFL defensive coach.

He's hung out to dry by Ken's 2010s gameplan which empties the backline for a high press that without Powell-Pepper, teams waltz away from.

Name one long term successful coach in the professional era that sounded like Ken?

Scott - No
Thompson - No
Clarko - No
Hardwick - No

But I wasn't talking about Ken. Most of those guys don't sound like geniuses either, but they have earned respect from their success. But a couple have some deep personal flaws that get overlooked because, successful sportsperson.

That and Aliir double fisting instead of chest marking, and closing his eyes when “spoiling” Cam Rayner.

Oh my, some of our 'defending' yesterday in particular.

That was very kind of you to call that attempt a spoil, even with the air quotes ;)

Dermie nails it here on his opinion around Esava. Not the sharpest tool in the shed when it comes to defending.

I think we NEED to tell Esava that his role is to defend his man. Don't worry about intercepting, don't worry about pushing up, just stop your man.

BZT, same - but he can have a bit of leg rope to help out if needed (he has more footy IQ)

Aliir is the best reader we have, and he's the one that needs to be coming across and helping when needed.

I know McKenzie is injured, but I think we're lacking his organisation in the backline, his composure and his experience. We have always looked lost when he's not playing, and it's still showing. I don't know if he's still got the legs, but i'd be playing him in the Burton role.

This is so obvious as to almost go without saying and yet ...

In post 205 of this thread I said if Goldsack brings a Mick Malthouse defensive mindset and set up to our defence, then it will be a good appointment.

Since the Brisbane game shellacking, 8 games ago, our defence has played with a Malthouse type stinginess.

Has helped that we have moved Esava out of there and our mids have played better, and our stupid high high press hasn't been as high, but our defence has tightened up.

Our 2nd halves but mainly our last quarters the last 5 games we have given the oppo very little opportunities to score.

vs Richmond 2nd half them 5.3 vs us 9.12 last quarter 0.1 v us 4.8
vs Carlton... 2nd half 1.5 vs 7.8 last quarter 0.3 v us 4.3
vs Sydney... 2nd half 4.3 vs 9.8 last quarter 2.2 v us 5.7
vs Melbourn 2nd half 3.4 vs 7.3 last quarter 1.4 v us 2.3
vs Adelaide. 2nd half 2.4 vs 7.5 last quarter 2.0 v us 5.2

The stingy defence continued last night.

2nd half them 2 5 v 6.6 us and last quarter 1.2 v vs 3.1.

Despite no Houston, Farrell off for 1.5 quarters and Aliir missing for 20 minutes as they had to work on his rolled ankle.

Something definitely has changed, both for the defensive group as a whole and the individuals within it.

It's not just Goldsack or individual player changes, it's across the ground defence. The high press was costing us so many coast to coast Joe the Goose goals, so we've pulled it back and apply much better pressure across all the three sectors of the ground.

Teams really have to take it on against us and that leads to turnovers and scoring opportunities the other way. Saw it last week with the crows and Freo last night, they could get the ball to their half back line, then had to stop because the options just weren't there.

But while talking about individuals, Zerk-Thatcher has been terrific this year. Gets in with the spoil, and can take a decent contested mark. He's a bit Brian Lake like.
