The head coaches of the five United Football League teams preparing to kickoff the 2011 UFL season in August have announced their protected player lists.

The first element of building each team’s roster starts with planning to re-sign a maximum of 40 players who saw action for their respective teams in 2010, followed by the forthcoming 2011 UFL Draft and adding players whose UFL rights each team claims through the Professional Exempt List.

UFL to pounce on undrafted NFL draft rookies

The NFL lockout could very well be a boom to the United Football League's ability to attract new players.

According to Jerry Glanville, one of two former NFL coaches to recently take over a UFL team, the younger league's focus is on players who aren't drafted by the NFL, but who NFL teams seek to sign after the draft.

Should the lockout continue through the April 28-30 draft, the UFL might not be competing with the NFL in its efforts to sign undrafted players -- 11 percent of whom, Glanville said, were starters in the NFL last season. That's because the NFL wouldn't allow its teams to sign those or any other players who didn't have contracts before the lockout.

Great article on Jerry Glanville and his life-attitude...

What if?

Those two words, Jerry Glanville doesn’t particularly like.

“I try to attack all ‘What ifs’ by trying to do it,” the Hartford Colonials head coach and general manager said. “Don’t let anybody tell you, ‘You can’t.’ Don’t take, ‘No’ for an answer. Don’t be sitting around six years from now saying ‘What if. What if I had done this.’ Just do it!”

Why not!

Glanville is much more fond of those two words, perhaps because he can relate to them through some of his life experiences.

Not sure yet about coverage in 2011 in the US. There is a smaller network that's taking on their games. I think there will be streams, read something about it somewhere. I'll be sure to update info on that as we draw nearer.

Their season starts around same time as NFL normally does.

Re: United Football League - Discussion

The 2011 United Football League season will be the third season in the United Football League. The eight-game regular season will begin during the weekend of Friday, August 12, 2011 and extend into October, followed by the 2011 UFL Championship Game on October 23, 2011.

The UFL's previous television contracts with Versus, HDNet and NESN expired December 31, 2010 after 2 seasons; the league is now seeking TV deals that will generate revenue for the league, something the previous contracts did not do (the league had to reimburse the networks for production costs in the previous deal). As of March 2011, the league is still in negotiations with potential TV partners, and is considering setting aside a portion of the package for the NFL's TV partners should their plans for the 2011 NFL season be altered by a work stoppage. Though ESPN has already stated it had no plans to televise UFL games, they also report that, in conversations with "programming people," that other networks are open to the possibility. The UFL confirmed that CBS Sports, Fox Sports and Turner Sports, along with Versus and HDNet, were in negotiations with the UFL regarding televising games.

The overtime rule I like, but none of the other "innovations" actually involve gameplay. The XFL had a lot of gameplay innovations. I loved having the ball in the middle of the field and two players running for it, instead of the coin flip. The XFL also eliminated fair catches which led to some players getting decimated by dudes running at full speed as soon as the caught the ball. They also had a "all punts are live" rule which I didn't like.

UFL Commissioner Wishes Australia Well

The players and coaching staff of the Australian national team heading to Austria to take part in the 2011 IFAF Senior World Championship received an unexpected and welcome send off from United Football League Commissioner Michael Huyghue.
The UFL Commissioner took time out from a visit to Sydney to speak at the team’s farewell dinner and helped give out jerseys to the 45 players selected to the Outback roster.

Agent Declares UFL Dead

Though today’s 12:00 p.m. ET press release from the UFL followed by a 2:00 p.m. ET conference call with Commissioner Michael Huyghue likely will serve the purpose of formally announcing a 30-day delay to the launch of training camp, one agent who represents players in the league privately has told us that, in his view, the UFL is dead.

The agent also passed along a copy of the memo from Sacramento Mountain Lions coach Dennis Green to his players on Monday regarding the situation. The full text appears below. (We converted it from all caps, since all caps is roughly the equivalent of screaming into someone’s eyeballs.)

“At 3:30 p.m. Pacific time today, the UFL league office has just informed us that the season has been delayed thirty (30) days.

“There has [sic] been significant funding issues, and the UFL and its teams cannot operate training camp at this time.

“Do not report to training camp. Stay in your home city, and check and see if your ticket is changeable to a later date. Sid will inform you as soon as possible as to when you can rebook.

“Regarding the regular season calendar and how the contract will work from here on out, Sid will let you know as soon as we hear more.

“This is a tough deal for everyone, including coaches and staff who are already here. We have been informed to leave camp Tuesday 19 July so we appreciate your patience and cooperation.”

Last week, Huyghue told PFT that the league would move forward for the 2011 season, with the four owners shouldering an expected operating deficit of $40 million. At a minimum, one or more of them have had second thoughts about what essentially could amount to throwing their money away.

I mean, at least they could do something more productive with all those 100-dollar bills, like light cigars with them.

It remains to be seen whether the UFL is indeed dead. The goal could be to hold it all together long enough for the NFL to swoop in and buy it once the lockout ends, a possibility to which Huyghue alluded last week.

UFL shrinks to four teams, six games
The good news is that the UFL hasn’t folded. For now.

The bad news, especially for one of the five teams, is that the league officially has contracted to four franchises. The league also will play in 2011 a reduced schedule of six games.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the Hartford Colonials will “suspend operations” for the 2011 season. Their players will be divvied up via an August 15 allocation draft. Each of the four remaining teams will pick six players from the Hartford roster.

The development ends, for now, the UFL career of former Oilers and Falcons coach Jerry Glanville (pictured). The other four head coaches are Dennis Green (Sacramento), Jim Fassel (Las Vegas), Joe Moglia (Omaha), and Marty Schottenheimer (Virginia).
