The Adelaide and Pt Adelaide ones make sense. They’re total goals for are well beyond the cohort around them - which to me suggests that defenders get antsy because of their scoring power. Not sure of the rationale for the others.

Defenders seem pretty antsy around the two best contested marks in the game Curnow and McKay. The Dogs rotate 4 or 5 genuine aerial threats forward of centre every other week. As do Port. Hard to defend against.

Bottom few clubs, Richmond, Hawthorn, Melbourne, Collingwood, run smaller forward lines and rely less on bombing the ball to a marking contest, which would result in less free kicks. The numbers reflect what's going on and not some conspiracy.

The umpires have clearly been looking after Carlton at both ends of the ground.

The Blues rank no.1 in "goals from free kick" differential.

• 4th highest percentage of their goals have been from frees... WB, WCE, NM, Carl are the outliers.
• 2nd lowest percentage of goals conceded have been from frees... Ess, Carl are the outliers.

Could this umpire favouritism be at the behest of Channel 7 to boost their flagging tv ratings?

Yes - I believe their was a directive, and possibly under the table payments, given to the umpires to pay Carlton more free kicks.

Channel 7 want them back on TV on Friday nights and to play finals.

It's exactly the thing us Blues supporters have been complaining about - as a team we never score any easy goals as we move the ball too slowly.

Still on the raw end of the differential though - umpires showing no mercy. Frankly if you can't mark the ball against our midget backline with no pressure on the kick coming in you should be penalised and the Eagles given a free kick.

Fwd 50 frees would be a little more telling.
Goals from frees is relying on a teams conversion rate. Might get less free kicks shots at goal but have better conversion so look like you are looked after by the umps more when actually you are not.

As I always say, it's not how many frees you get it is where and when they are paid.

In fairness, Melbourne's accuracy for shots on goal is barely better than Carlton some weeks

Carlton near the top doesn't really surprise, with the amount of whistles that Curnow gets. 26 for the year so far and so probably 24 are Curnows

It would probably be double if McKay remembered how to put the ball between the big sticks

I don’t believe it’s a conspiracy, but everyone knows Curnow and McKay get way more soft feee kicks in front of goal than any other key forwards.

Misleading stats. These are goals as a 'result' of free kicks and not goals kicked from free kicks, yes?

Not really relevant if the free kick isn't a direct shot on goal. It could literally be from a HTB at half back which is then immediately turned back the other way and results in a goal.

Also probably doesn't remove any goals kick from an advantage call.
