10 DIVING AND HOLDING
The drama of the weekend gripped everyone. Players milked free kicks and some should be fined for acting. A few got away with murder.
Look at this photograph of Carlton’s Patrick Cripps being held by held by two St Kilda players at a stoppage.
Saints players keep a close watch on Patrick Cripps in the final seconds on Saturday.

The Blues should send this photo to the AFL umpiring department and demand answers. And not just seek clarity, but demand why Cripps is not given the protection he deserves. If that was at full-forward, the forward would receive a free kick every time. Seriously, this is lamentable umpiring.

forwards miss out on these apparent frees all the time - see walker, west coast final the other year and plenty more - so I don't know what you mean by forwards beeing paid them "every time" ..........silly comment

Let's face it, without them there is no game. Consistently poor interpretations and fluctuations from week to week. Might be highlighted if Crippa gets looked after this week.
Education and less interference from the rule makers. Make umpires job as easy as possible. The best officials are the ones who don't get noticed.

Everyone seems to be more than happy with the umpiring performances so far this season. Thread has served its purpose.

I heard on Christmas Day Ray Chamberlain served mint sauce with the turkey and cranberry sauce with the lamb. Typical ****ing umpire!

Umpiring has been shit for quite some time now.

A lot of it has to do with the rules committee though, they keep on changing things around and since umpiring is only a part-time thing, it's really no surprise.

Oh, and get rid of their mics.
Would rather they get rid of their Rays

It will be claimed that Eleni is an easy target female etc etc.

But she is by far the worst umpire we had all season. With all female members of my family agreeing.

I think any specific singling out of any umpire is a bit below the belt, except for Razor Ray, who clearly does seem to enjoy, if not reveal in hamming it up as the boo/hiss pantomine villain umpire.

Also Eleni is still relatively young/inexperienced in games and years umpires in one of the most difficult games in the world to adjudicate, especially with constant rule changes (sometimes during the season)

If she was a 10/12 year umpiring veteran, you might have a point, but as such, I do agree that is she an easy target, if not typical scapegoat for the current clowns who are running the Umpiring and Rules dept/committee.

Steve Hocking and his fellow galoots like KB are not exactly making life easy for the likes of Eleni and her fellow umpires. That is where most of the criticsm should be levelled at, in my humble opinion.

This is true, although the fact she was fast tracked into the AFL for PR reasons has certainly not helped. The ex AFL players who become umpires like Bannister, Fisher etc take years to develop the skills, but they come from a base of at least understanding the game. Its not Eleni's fault that she has had the spotlight shone on her, but the simple fact is that she is well below par when it comes to umpiring ability. Carlton rightfully so being the worst team in the comp over the past few years have had her umpire us more than most, but hopefully as we climb the ladder we start getting the better/more experienced umpires

By easy target I mean she will be spotted more as the only female umpire, you know it's Eleni at a glance.

Whereas most people couldn't name 6 male umpires.

Steve Hocking and co should all be sacked. No two ways about it.

The media are partly to blame for Eleni being one of the most high profile female umpires in the league.

I remember back to the fond days of the 90s, buying the footy record (back when it was actually good and ran good footy yarns, instead of being a glorified ad for McDonald's these days) and opening up to the pages where the final teams were listed and umpiries for the game, and hoping beyond hope, we didn't get stuck with Darren Goldspink or Grant Vernon.

You do realise Eleni has been umpiring for 10 years before her first AFL game, parents were also umpires. Think her knowledge of the game would be very solid

Not just Eleni, the media has made it about the umpires more than it should be.

A good umpire is one you don’t notice, can’t be said for many of the current crop.

Talking to them at any stage during the coverage should be off limits, unless they are explaining their decisions at the end of the game.
