Its starting to be a joke now if you saw the under 18s game at abers the umpires were a flipping joke like every other week. Do these duds even get trained to be umpires? just getting a father and son in a orange uniform and telling them to go out there and umpire when they have no flipping clue how to. PATHITIC

yeah two of the craigieburn players got reported when they shouldent of pathitic umpires. the big boss of the umpires was there watching how they did IMO they shouldent be alowed to umpire another game EVER after that performance.

yeah, im a craigieburner my self, and we have had some pretty bad umpires. We have had some of the head umps bosses people out at our game for a couple of games. Against Doutta, the female umpire was dating the ruckman for doutta, didnt we get done that game
 
In think the goal umpires need to be looked at for the 2009 season.

Some of them have been doing it a long time and good on em, but with the pace of some of the games now, simply leaning to one side and having a GUESS is not the way to go about it.....points paid as goals and vice versa......!:mad:

I have goal umpired a couple of twos games this season and literally have had to run to one side for a quick snap.......:thumbsu:

If you are part of the u16 div 1 side that lost that day down at douttas yeah she was bad but your coach lost that game for you guys as he had no idea what he was doing, he had top players running on and off the bench and players playing postions they werent suited to .Yelling messages from the sidelines instead of the runner actually running onto the field.

Gilbert have you considered contributing to the solution and having a crack at umpiring your self, I am sure your knowledge and interpretation of the rules would be so superior to the current crop of duds umpiring in the EDFL, but my bet is that you wouldnt have the courage.

yeah i know what you mean by what you say. Our bench, didn't give us no help at all. That was one of our worst games that day. We had some of our players playing out of position because some of them had injuries. If i remember rightly we had 20 players, and 3 carrying injuries and 1 with school footy commitments.

My bet is that there would be very few of people who have the courage to do it. Who would want to go out there and cop abuse from clowns? and then have garbage wrote about them on here. Myself as a current player, i admit that the standard isn't great, and i can't see it getting any better when they get minimal pay and with the constant increase in petrol prices, fancy a drive out to craigeburn for $50 a game only to get abused by both sides...no thanks! And do you think that verbal barrages from over the fence will change any decisions??

I can't believe i'm on here standing up for umpires!!
 
Good to see things haven't changed with Umpires getting heaps. I umpired A Grade finals over 40 years ago with Doutta, Pascoe Vale, Glenroy and the now-defunct Brunswick City being the main teams and it was just the same then

to be honest they get paid quite well...considering i used to be 1. A good umpire is one no1 notices, they should watch the game properly and be consistant with there calls and no-one will have a problem ( except for the odd clown or 2)

I agree with that. Consistency is often the issue, unfortunately umpires at any level will never be 100% consistent, it's just basic human error that we all suffer from. Adding to that, i doubt there would be many players and/or supporters that have actually read the rule book (20 years of playing i know i never have), hence everyone has their own interpretation on each rule and frequently it is incorrect! Personally and regrettably i don't think the day will ever come when umpires aren't a topic for debate and criticism.

yeah ur right there cazman.
You rarely hear people say "how good were the umpires" you never see articles saying how good some umpires are. You only see or hear of umpires if they are bad.

on your topic about the rule book...they dont even need to read the rule book or do a test on it to be able to umpire..its a joke!

The EDFL's biggest expense is the payment of umpires. This is paid for by the clubs via their affiliation fees. But with 24 clubs contributing... do the math.. it costs clubs a small fortune to contribute so your can bet that umpires do indeed get paid well.

I believe the last Annual Report is either on their website or about to be.
Check the financial breakdown. Their biggest source of revenue goes towards payment of umpires.
 
Parents take the game more seriously then the kids in U10s, 12s & 14s I have heard.

To someone that said a pay rise could get more quality umpires; I agree. A pay rise would be certainly needed sometime soon, expenses are rising day by day and yet the pay has stayed the same for a couple of years now I have been told. Time to move on with the times.
