Roast Umpires

Id like to see when a guy twice marks the ball in the F50 be paid a mark rather than play on.

100% right. I dont generally have a problem with the free kicks they are paying against us (except the sydney game which was a shocker), I am opposed to the blatent inconsistency in what they will pay for us. I have watched a replay of this game and those marks not being paid, plus the number of infringements not paid against collingwood defenders in marking contests in our forward 50 were appauling. THey just let it go and then pay one to Dawes for Fletchers infringement at the other end of hte ground. It swings the scoreline in a massive way.

you blokes can't honestly be complaining about the umpiring yesterday? ess had the rub of the green all day. yes the fletcher call was soft but it was there - his right hand was in dawes' back. how many times did ess players not get called for holding the ball when they should have been? it was in double figures. yet obrien gets pinged after taking possession mid air - i would love to know where his prior opportunity was. possibly the worst decision of the year to date

^funny that, i thought the harry O one was a good decision. There were worse ones that were missed against you. If youve watched any other games youd realise that its now, 'making an attempt', which I hardly agree with, but if that is the interpretation it should be consistently applied, which it isn't. Harry O got his arms up and free, and being a big lad he is, he had more then enough time to fire off a handpass before he was brought to ground, but decided to fall and put the ball on the ground.
If Hurley and Ryder got the same free as McVeigh for the chopping of the arms... though that free kick was pathetic. Just shows the inconsistency I thought.

Jolly, the ruckman, grabs the ball from the ruck contest and holds the ball whilst tackled looking for an option to handball.....which he eventually finds as two guys hang of him. Numerous times.

Harry O tackled and swung around 360 degrees, if not 540 degrees. Play on.

I'm all for the interpretation of these new rules (yes, even Fletch's in the back) because the guess work has been taken out of it for the umpires i.e. a hand in the back, chopping etc are all payable and easy to see.

But what has happened with the above two rules?? Have I missed that they have been taken out of the rule book or did I imagine that they ever existed??

possibly the worst decision of the year to date

lol... nowhere near it. Montagna's 80m deliberate was easily the worst

Watson had his head almost taken off in the last quarter yesterday and not even a free.

You're kidding yourself if you truly believe that we had the rub of the green.

Hurley's arm getting held by Reid and then Toovey comes in and completely takes him out was unforgiveable.

He didn't make an attempt to dispose though. That's holding the ball. Go read the rules before complaining

wow, how can you be complaining? yes there were a few decisions you got jibbed on, but no doubting you had the rub of the green. you had around 8 more free kicks for the game then us.

What i was severely disappointed with was the holding the ball decisions against davis, and harryo when they were tackled as they collected the ball, and some players(melksham) who continually ducked there heads winning numerous frees, even a dons supporter near me said that as well.

bottom line is essendon challenged collingwood, and no doubting that they have been the best we have faced this season. Umpires cannot be blamed.

That's because 90% of them were there, free kicks are paid when required. We should've had another 8-10 paid.

Funny that Collingwood supporters fail to acknowledge the countless free kicks not awarded to us throughout the game.

Collingwood won because they were better, but the umpiring certainly helped them.

Harry O'Brien is a dirty, pathetic cheat. Scragging in 90% of his contests and he still nearly handed us the game through Crameri.

They didn't cost us the game, our mistakes did, however it's fine to discuss them anyway. As soon as I read a post that states the free kick count as an indicator of the umpiring, I stop reading.

IMO, our loss would be mainly pinned down to missed opportunities.

In the 1st quarter, the Bombers went inside their forward fifty 15 times for three points, while Collingwood went inside 13 times for 4.2. Two missed goals by Jetta in the second quarter were huge moments in the game.

As for the Collingwood fans pointing out the fact that the Bombers had 8 more free kicks than the Pies, most of our free kicks had come from the tackles that we laid to bring us back into the game. I'd say the Pies had more incorrect free kicks paid to them that were crucial to the result than to us - but like I said, we were our own worst enemy in regards to the final result, not the umps.

Move on.

The umpiring if anything was in favour of Collingwood yesterday as it always seems to be when we play them recently.

I am astounded at Collingwood fans actually telling us they were hard done by, how inbred are you guys??

Collingwoods defenders have a gold pass with the umpires, scrag all you like we wont ping you.

I hate blaming the umpires.

But having Pies fans come in this thread and lecture us is a ****ing joke. Just like the family of vermin sitting behind me who made noises like a bovine with a terminal case of mad cow disease every time they gave away or didn't get a free kick.

Hilarious, when they bellow about a decision not paid for them with hands in the back, then when 30 seconds later the same non-decision goes against them and they're dead silent.

**** I hate one eyed supporters

I am still trying to work how Crameri' mark in the first quarter, was deemed to be out of bounds on the second attempt, and when Jobe had his head taken off, then got done for holding the ball (correct decision).

Or when Stanton got hit in the head from behind trying to mark the ball in the 3rd quarter, but nothing was paid. Resulting in turnover goal.

Or when a Collingwood player clearly went out of bounds in the 4th, which was visible to two umpires, yet nothing was said.

Or later in the last quarter when the game was still up for grabs, we laid 6 tackles in a row that should have all been ball (with enough prior opportunity), yet Collingwood were allowed to get out, resulting in a goal.

Still - it was our missed opportunities in the first quarter that cost us. If we took advantage of our superior inside 50 numbers (15 to Collingwood's 13) and capitalised on our goals (instead of kicking just 3 points to Collingwood's 26), we would have been better positioned for the rest of the game. Simple as that.

The frees missed for Essendon would've been canceled out by the frees missed for Collingwood. It was umpired like a final, a lot went go and trust me it frustrated us as much as it did you. The free kick count suggests to me that less were missed for Essendon than were for us, though I'm guessing you'd disgree, neutrals seem split so in the end it probably didn't favour anyone.
