And how many times can Cloke be blocked by two Geelong defenders without getting a free kick? Serioously, they sandwiched him many times last night from in front and behind (blocking him completely), which resulted in no movement from our key forward. How is that fair? I don't understand it. If we were doing that to Hawkins he would get the free 10 times out of 10.

Selwood and the umpire were having a laugh together at the three quarter time break ... It's not a good look at all

You do realise they were probably both laughing about the over-reaction of the Collingwood player (Harry O from memory) when he got a free right before the siren against Selwood, right? They are human, it'd be hard not to laugh at someone carrying on like that, and that's also why they were next to each other at the siren..

I have not seen the match so cannot comment on umpiring but I do recall a couple of weeks ago when 1 of the cats got a free kick paid against him for out on the full when another cat player simply took the resultant free kick and they were allowed to play on.
When something of that magnitude happens how the devil can you have faith that the umpires do not collude with the Cats when things get tight outrageous umpiring and simple cheating from the Cats but watching Sellwood and others in action not really surprising.

heard today that we got our last free kick at the 20 minute mark of the second term and wasn't awarded one until the final 2 seconds of the 3rd.

Last night there were so many calls that made me lose my voice from yelling at my TV. There were a number of decisions that went in favour of Geelong, yet anything 50/50 would not go in ours. To me that shows clear bias. Are we a sloppy side? I definitely don't believe so. I'd love to ask the umpires how they can justify giving away so many free kicks to Geelong, yet deny us of the same decisions they were making in Geelongs favour. How many times, a high tackle was laid on us? Wasn't paid. PODS shoves harry in the back in a marking contest. Not paid. Yet if we as much as flicked a player on the shoulder, it was a free kick. I was literally just waiting for a free kick to be paid against us. Where is the consistency? And what angers me more than anything, is we always seem to cop the momentum changing ones. Eg. The ruck free kick against Jolly in the third. It might also sound like I'm reading too much in to this but it never ceases to amaze me how we always seem to even out the free kick count with insignificant shit free kicks that don't impact the game. Eg. Harry O's free kick on the siren. Or free kicks we get in junk time when the game is over.

I believe this crap happens week in week out but last night was as clear as water. There needs to be an umpiring restructure so that there is consistency in ALL rules among ALL teams.

How about the free agains Jolly becuse "he had his knee up"? LOL you don't even have to make contact anymore to give away a free

I do feel sorry for the umpires.

It's a thankless job they do. At best they go unnoticed, at worst they get flamed.

And let's face it, without them we wouldn't have a game of footy.

I think there's a little too much criticism levelled at umpires and not enough at the umpiring hierarchy / rules committee.

Do umpires have a review and go through the weekend tapes with their coaches? (ie: just like the players do?). They should.

yes, I believe they do have a weekly review

I almost feel sorry for them for having to interpret ridiculously convoluted rules.
There's nothing convoluted about telling a player to go back and kick over the mark.

I agree. Usually it's paying us a free kick as we're running with the ball in space, so it shows up as a free kick paid with advantage, but really makes no difference whatsoever to the game.

Either that or Cloke takes a strong grab that ought to be paid a mark, but they pay it as chopping the arms or contact to the head, so it appears in the free kick count but is basically of no net benefit to us whatsoever.

Im watching the game again right now as I too had to step away on occasion to save myself a paycheck and as a result missed a fair bit. Still fuming watching it again, if anything I'm even more perplexed though luckily also more in control. Had a peek at the main board but expected as much so no surprises there. Upset that we won I assume.
Was listening to SEN earlier and cannot believe that Finey wouldnt hear anything to do with the umpiring and even said the spray Harry copped from one of the umps was 'a part of umpiring' or something similar. Perhaps KB is issueing directives as to what needs to be enforced on talkback week to week. Id be happy if that were the case (could well be) but when directives are forced on umps by the Gash or whatever he/it is on a weekly bases how can the AFL expect us as lovers of the game to sit by idly and eat the shit we're fed? Its really insulting to know that we must be viewed with such disdain that its expected that we accept that the rules will be 'interpreted' differently from game to game, week to week.
Rules are rules. Laws are laws. If this situation continues then perhaps from now on KB and his mob should be officially retitled 'The loosely enforced/open to interpretation Guidelines of the game committee' As I understand it rules/laws aren't supposed to be interpreted, only understood and followed. Anything else is either bending or breaking.
The AFL either simplify things and stop screwing with a good thing or admit that they haven't a clue and have a 'Guidelines comittee' as what we have now aren't rules or laws.
Enough of my rant though.
The sweetest part of all this is that as I watch the game and shake my head I'm even more impressed/proud that our boys wouldn't be denied. Ball is back. Still have Beams, Dids, Johnno, Thomas etc. hopefully returning soon. We have a lot to work on yes, but this team know they can do it.
And knowing that Harry O called Hawkins a 'fat f#ck' is a pisser...

They got 15 of next 16 free kicks after we went 4 goals up.

Nothing in rules says count should be even, but it's not like we were second to the footy or taking blokes out.

Then in the last when Sam Dwyer is running into goal, gets tackled before he can take possession & it's play on. Then literally next contest Mackie gathers, gets tackled and just drops it cold and we get pinged for holding the man!

Almost the same thing happened against the Hawks and the Bombers.

Umpires don't usually concern me much but last night I was furious with many of their decisions. The constant revision of the rules of the game is ruining football as a spectacle, as well as resulting in a lot of confusion about interpretation of the rules. No other sport changes the game's rules the way that the AFL does. There are too many inconsistencies and too many grey areas in the application of the rules by umpires. Jolly's report was a joke.

You're right and how many rule changes or interpretations have favoured Collingwood directly or indirectly?

I don't have a problem with umpires making mistakes, I have a problem with them showing obvious bias.

That Enright one in the first quarter was just simply disgraceful.

Takes the mark on the defensive side of the square, and overruns his mark by 10-15m - which is fine as he was running flat out. Chooses not to play on, so presumably will retreat to his mark. Sam Dwyer, the consummate professional retreats to the mark and even points it out.

Then, the Umpire actually orders Enright back behind his mark, Enright retreats about 3m tops, and is still a good few metres forward of Dwyer who is manning the mark and also about 5m wide of the mark as well. Despite the umpire having seen this, and already having ordered him behind the mark - Enright decides to kick from wherever he likes and spots up Hawkins for their opening goal.

You can only come to one conclusion, the umpire was either too lazy to call play back, or thought 'It's Corey Enright, I'm not calling him back" and just allowed it to happen.

That's not an umpire making a mistake when he was blindsided or didn't see an incident, that's an umpire consciously deciding to ignore the rules and allow Enright to do as he pleases. He should not be umpiring in the AFL next week, there is simply no justification for such crap.

Great post. It's an absolute farce for the AFL that we have to bring in a new rule every off season it seems. How many elite sports in the world do that I wonder??

The rule commitee needs to a serious overhaul. Get blokes like Bartlett (way out of touch) away from it and get some modern footy people on it! Somethings these blokes must think AFL isn't a contact sport the way the rules are heading..

The only serious gripe I have with the umpies is the lack of consistency. A lot of Geelong frees last night were just terrible soft and when they happen to us, nothing!

I usually get over the umpiring pretty quickly, even when we lose. I can take bad umpiring as it usually works both ways and thats just life so suck it up. But I am still hung up & jaded by what went on Saturday night.

In so many different ways the umpires influenced the games result. It wasn't just the bad decisions & free kcik count, it was the attitude of the umpires towards the Collingwood players that I found disturbing. I am not sure what Jolly has done (probably mouthed off too much & written some mouthy articles in the Age) but he was certaiunly targeted.

The one that started my blood boiling and caused a life threatening heart condition was not a free kick. It was Enright being allowed to play on after a mark in the first quarter (12.40min in).

Enright marked the ball on the run pulled up and claimed the mark, stopping play. The umpire paid the mark and made Dwyer come back away from Enright & man the spot where the mark was taken. The umpire called Enright back, who was a good 3+ metres away from that spot. Enright stepped back a couple of steps (still 3+metres wide of the mark) then played on and ran off. The umpire then called play on. WTF. He ran on kicked it deep to an open forward line & resulted in a goal to Hawkins.

Every other umpire would call the player back and kick over the mark (usually pedantic on this) and be a little shirty that the player did not listen to his instructions. Once Enright played on he was either too lazy to call him back, decided he should have called play on originally anyway or thought Enright is a good bloke I will let him get on with it & not hassle him.

The right call was probably just play on originally. However, once he made the decision not to call play on & set the mark, its his onbligation to make sure he comes back over the mark.

By calling Dwyer back and keeping him out of the play to enable Enright to play on is a terrible non decision. I have no doubt that if Dwyer had ignored the umpire & ran off the mark to preventing Enright playing on that 50m would have been paid - and rightly so. Basically the umpire couldn't have helped Enright more - even if he sheparded Dwyer out of the way with a shirt front!

Anyway thats my rant. There were so many others that I really do not want to look at again.
