Roast Umpiring

Throwing in a word of support. Umpiring was very poor tonight. Not so much the calls in favour of the Bulldogs (although that reverse holding free was atrocious) but rather just all the clear frees to Collingwood that weren't paid. Very poor showing.

Another embarrassing umpire thread, umpiring was fine IMO, we just gave away a heap of frees we didn't need to, over zealous perhaps I don't know, but we were very undiciplined IMO, some of you guys need to start looking with both eyes open.

Haven't seen too many complaints about the frees we gave away, we were sloppy and most appeared to be there. It's more that fact that Lake was giving Cloke a reach around all night whilst Hargrave pinned both his arms and the umpires just let it carry on, the muppets simply didn't pay us the same frees that they rewarded the doggies with.

This pretty much sums it up, I would still say the doggies would have won the count but I reckon there was a minimum 4-5 blatant ones they missed against us. And I dont care how undisciplined 8-0 in the first qtr was nothing short of a disgrace.

It's all very well to say that we were indisciplined, and we probably were - that's reflected by the frees against us. But the fact that the frees were 9-0 at one stage, and 21-10 by the end is suggesting that the opposition were close to perfect in everything they did. And in such a tightly contested game, it's hard to see how that was possible.

The frees for us really have very little to with our discipline, and to have two weeks in a row where the opposition have been close to perfect even though we've won both games is strange.

I don't usually talk about the umpiring but it was a disgrace last night. One of the most one sided umpiring displays I've ever seen. Some bad ones were Keefe in the goal square, the in the back Cloke didn't get on the edge of the centre square, the one against Maxwell (I think) at the very start on the wing, the blatant Griffen head duck that was paid, Reid on the half forward flank when the opposition player practically hugged him around the waist and didn't go the ball, free against Max on the edge of the fifty where both players were obviously holding, holding the ball against where our player (can't remember who) had his trailing arm pinned at the exact time he took possession, was gang tackled and he clearly had no prior opportunity and the off the ball shepherd on Harry that wasn't paid.

There were Bulldogs supporters all around me and they were actually laughing at the umps and the free ride they were being given.

Once the opposition get a sniff that the umpires are with them its open season do what you want time. no 17 Smimdt this guy kills us every time and iirc malthouse made a point about this guy back in 09 and that no 10 umpire last night Pathetic.
Bronx jeers going into the last quarter is my barometer for the umpires, if this is happening its confirmed your club has been screwed. The sooner NEW AUSTRALIANS off the boat are trained up for umpiring the better. WTF hate would some bloke from war torn Kabul or Bahgdad have for the pies or for that matter all AFL clubs.

I've always been wary of Justin Schmitt since he molested us in round 1 2007 against North Melbourne.

Man, I remember that day. Was that the one where Shannon Grant hit the post from 5m out?:D

There was a game against Carlton in 2008 (the second one) where we were 3-4 goals up in the third qtr and he paid a free kick to Brad Fisher in their goal square when nobody touched him, and they went on and kicked 6 goals in a row or something and won the game.

Also round 1 2009 against Adelaide he and Nicholls pretty much single-handedly won them the game (less than a goal in the end).

Wasn't he the one in 2008 when Alistair Clarkson said after losing narrowly to Geelong: "that number 17 was a good player for them, wasn't he?" ?

With all this "political correctness" rubbish and the potential anger that may arise from the AFL, it is actually worth it, once in awhile for the coach to put serious heat on the officials.

Bucks should have said something. It's not the frees against us so much, it was the ones we weren't blatantly receiving that was laughable.

Sir Alex Ferguson does it better than anyone else around the world. He cops his fine, he wears it but big deal. The next time those officials or any official is in charge of a Manchester game, they are rather nervous about what they do and don't call- which is exactly the desired outcome Ferguson had set out to achieve.

I won't say too much re the game last night, because in general i think assessing umpiring is best done watching games as a neutral, ones where you really have zero care who wins.

Let me talk about the playing surface at Etihad instead.

It did not come across as an even playing field.

Not even remotely.

Worst umpiring I've seen in years.

21-10 is ridiculous. Mind you, 6 of ours came in the second quarter, and 3 of those came in 2 minute patch.

Despite being outplayed, the margin could have been much larger if the umps weren't wearing Bulldog jumpers under their yellow ones.

But its not even the free kick count. It's the inconsistency, and the obvious ones we didn't get paid that we should have. I don't mind a lopsided free count if there's consistency.

We had 1 free in our fwd 50 (which I can't even remember), and they had 6 in theirs.

They were gifted two goals right at the start of the game (and Picken should have kicked the one right at the start too), that helped them get an early lead and really meant that we had to work our backsides off to just get back to level terms.

It didn't get much better either, the holding at the contests was just ridiculous. Hopefull next week is better up at the Gabba, I am still haunted by the game there in rd 2 2008 where Vozzo gifted them three goals in the last qtr and we lost by 2 points.

Yeah I still remember that game and that Screw Job the Prick Vozzo gave us.

That is when I started calling him Vozzo the Clown.

Might have to start calling Shmidtt - Schmidt the Dog

I haven't any problem with umpiring in our games so far this year, until last night.

This just exposed where umpiring is failing with a 3-umpire system. You've got one at one end paying a free every time someone has a finger laid on them and at the other end you need to get shot or stabbed before that umpire will blow his whistle.

For some reason umpires are not all on the same page and that is essential for a multiple umpire system to work. This shouldn't be hard at all to accomplish, but apparently it is. Does the fault lay with Gieschen? Are umpires just not good enough? Is Vlad and his idiot sidekick Anderson, Fartlett and the rules committee ****ing up the rules so much that they're confusing the shit out of umpires?

Who knows but they better fix it soon or people will start turning off because not too many people probably enjoy being angry for two and a half hours every weekend, like I was last night.

Also round 1 2009 against Adelaide he and Nicholls pretty much single-handedly won them the game (less than a goal in the end).

I came down for that game and remember if vividly and Schmidt being the culprit.

Tyson Edwards gets tackled while trying to evade a tackler, massive call for ball, the ball spills free, Edwards then regathers the footy with the Pie player still completing the tackle, a free for holding the man to Edwards.

That 1st quarter was as bad I've seen. At the start of the game, Pendles jumps up to grab the footy, gets pushed in the back by an opponent making no play for the footy, Pendles doesn't have the footy and lands on his back. No free. Reid continually got arm chopped by Hargrave, no frees. High tackles, pushes in the back all were let go. Ridiculous.

I anticipate an approach to the Geish over that 1st quarter.

I remember that, we had been 5 goals down early, we had stormed back to be 3 goals in front at that point, and after that free to Edwards they went forward, got a goal, and the next three after that as well.

I also remember a massive smother off an Adelaide player's boot, the ball went sideways, an Adelaide player caught it and a Pies player tackled him, it was paid a mark and 50 metres, and he kicked a goal.

This guy has history. He actually has no idea about the game at all.
