GC17 have been pushing the idea of the guards by putting it on their shortlist and claiming "they were all equally liked by the public" when marlins and stingrays were clear favourites and then making their mascot a lifeguard plus having red and yellow, the colours of the beach flags. maybe they should just name themselves the guards and let it grow on people.

No name exsists that everyone would love. Better just to name them something and move on to more pressing issues. If Essendon were created tomorrow no way we would be called the 'Bombers' given recent events around the world. I happen to like the 'Suns' as it is fitting for the Sunshine State and it would be catchy..."we are the suns of the Gold Coast" but I would happy with the Guards:). Just didn't like the Ironmen.

you'll never make a name that EVERYONE will love, thats why you make a name that most people will like and get everyone to accept it

well its lucky essendon aren't a new club, then again we'd probably just be called the jets or something

You're probably right. Speaking to a friend from England, he said a soccer team (players) are called the 'toffee men' because the family that own the team make toffee. That happened because they didn't have an official nickname. A pretty good example of inheriting a name you don't want but it sticks anyone (bad toffee pun):)

we had the "frogs" in a thread when GC17 first said this on the footy show. they have a good chance of inheriting a smart arse name that they're gonna redgret and i dont think they realise this.
btw, i liked your bad toffee pun

I'm hoping that those of us who really wanted the Sharks nickname band together and make it ours de-facto. Despite what's been said about trademarks, there isn't any nail in the coffin that prevents us from having this name. - There's just plenty of hard work. If we come to next year's games with Shark chants, and Shark banners we can start a bit of a role. Get the whole fan base behind it and the GC17 will take notice.

And herein lies the problem...

I plan on doing the same thing, using the nickname "Marlins" instead. Now so far on this thread there are four different people who are going to be shouting four different names, confusing any officionados who care to listen even further.

They should have just taken the most popular name and gone with it. Those who didn't like it would just have to deal with it.

these things have a way of working out. my guess is itd start with everyone trying different nicknames but one will eventually stand out the most and they'll have their nickname... i think.

but he best option would probably be for the club to say "this is our name, deal with it"(in a nicer and more subtle way)

i think quite clearly the gold coast sharks is perfect. it rolls off the tongue nicely, its a good logo and matches the beachside image of the team.

don't know if there's an issue with southport or cronulla (nrl) but i agree with other posters that we just start using it and then it sticks.

There is no chance in hell the team being known as the Sharks. I would love to see you try and convince the anti-Southport crowd (i.e. everyone else) to call the team that name.

It would be like if you were setting up a team to represent the entire city of Melbourne and calling them the Magpies.

Never going to happen.

I'm one of those anti-Southport people. Footy on the GC doesn't revolve around Southport and giving The Gold Coast the same nickname would immediately alienate anybody with those same sentiments.

No Sharks. No Stingrays.......

GO MARLINS !!

What anti-Sharks supporters? :p

Most people on the Gold Coast can't even name a QAFL side other than the Sharks. I really don't think there's that many people that oppose them. And even if there are, it's not the Southport Sharks, it's the Gold Coast Sharks. - Completely different organization. Nationally it's a well liked name too. People would take no time getting used to the Gold Coast Sharks. Goes like cheese and crackers. :thumbsu:

And you know most people on the Gold Coast, do you? I could probably name half of them without flinching (including all the GC - based ones) as well as a whole bunch of other sides in the other divisions, which I also follow a bit.

so now this is a popularity contest?

it is a good point for them not to be called the sharks. i think you'll get a case like port adelaide where all the port magpies haters just go for adelaide (i guess itd be brisbane in this case)

this just seems like another reason why GCFC should just pick a name and stick with it before they could end up with the sharks and lose anti-southport fans.
